The biggest fight in combat sports history is rumored to be set to do bigger numbers than you might think.

Currently, Las Vegas odds have Mayweather vs. McGregor at an over-under of 4.9 million buys as the UFC lightweight champion makes his professional boxing debut against, arguably, the greatest of all time in undefeated 49-0 boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. who is coming out of retirement for the “Money Fight.” It all goes down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on August 26th live on Showtime pay-per-view (PPV).

Mayweather is no stranger to major combat sports box office numbers, as his long-awaited clash with Manny Pacquiao, dubbed “The Fight of the Century” at the time, drew 4.4 million buys and generated over $400 million in revenue. Mayweather vs. McGregor, per UFC President Dana White, is expected to ‘kill’ the 4.9 mark set by Vegas oddsmakers, as “The Billion Dollar Fight” is set to make all involved extremely wealthy (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“There’s a lot of things boxing doesn’t do,” White said. “For instance, most of the time, you’re dealing with a network. Networks aren’t too excited to go OTT. It’s not a big thing they’re into. We have the capabilities, we do it all the time, and I believe we’re one of the best to do it. The numbers are tracking huge. We’re going to do the numbers that everybody has been talking we’re going to do.”

Mayweather recently predicted that when all is said and done he’d take home around $350 million, while McGregor is expected to make somewhere north of $100 million.

Floyd Mayweather believes UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor is an ‘extremely dirty’ fighter.

After footage of McGregor and now-former sparring partner Paulie Malignaggi was leaked by UFC President Dana White, “Money” has been able to study a small bit of film on his opponent for this month’s (Sat. August 26, 2017) boxing mega-fight in “Sin City.” Malignaggi has been retired since his last fight this past March, and hasn’t been training in the gym since due to his obligations as a Showtime Boxing analyst.

Mayweather brought up this point during his recent media call to promote Mayweather vs. McGregor and took a subtle jab at the Irishman for going the distance in training with the retired 36-year-old (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“We’re sitting here judging Paulie, a guy that’s been retired and just commentating and traveling the world, not going to the gym at all, going in there with a guy that’s just working out — an athlete period, that’s just working out,” Mayweather said. “Every day, every day. Honestly, it shouldn’t have even went 12 rounds with a young guy that’s an athlete.”

“Money” stated that he got the opportunity to see McGregor’s sparring footage and he witnessed a ton of illegal actions from UFC 155-pound champ. He also claimed that their referee for their bout will be fair for both sides in order for the pair to have a ‘solid fight’:

“I had a chance to see it and my thoughts is, it was real interesting,” Mayweather said. “But, you know, a lot of rabbit punching, illegal rabbit punching behind the head. A lot of shots were illegal. A lot of grappling, a lot of wrestling, a lot of illegal shots. That’s just my honest opinion.

“I’m pretty sure the referee is going to be fair on both sides. I want the referee to be fair and treat both competitors — myself and Conor McGregor — [the same]. Be even and treat us fair. I just want to have a good solid fight.”

McGregor brought in Hall Of Fame boxing referee Joe Cortez to officiate his sparring sessions in order for him to get a better grasp on the Queensberry rules. Despite this, Mayweather doubled down on his illegal moves remarks from earlier and labeled the Irishman as an ‘extremely dirty’ fighter:

“He had Joe Cortez in his training camp, which is a great thing,” Mayweather said. “Even though he had Joe Cortez in his training camp, I still seen him being extremely dirty. But my job is not to worry about the referee, my job is to go out there and fight and let the referee do his job.”

The Sun

For weeks now Mayweather has been claiming that he will be coming straight at McGregor once the opening bell tolls, abandoning his usual game-plan of focusing more on his defense and counter punching. That tune doesn’t seem to have changed much, as he said he will be coming ‘straight ahead’ for McGregor once the fight gets underway:

“Like I said on numerous occasions building up to this fight, I’m coming straight ahead, so he don’t have nothing to worry about,” Mayweather said. “I look forward following the Queensberry rules of boxing and I’m pretty sure he looks forward to following the Queensberry rules of boxing.”

Floyd Mayweather Sr. Threatens To Sue Conor McGregor ‘If He Fights Dirty’

Many in the combat sports world – most prominently on the boxing side – have suggested one of the only ways Conor McGregor will be able to get a leg up on all-time great Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their August 26 boxing match is to ‘fight dirty.’

That belief was recently amplified by McGregor’s former sparring partner and current carnival barker/media pet Paulie Malignaggi revealing all of the supposedly ‘dirty stuff’ he does while boxing, be it for a lack of knowledge of the rules or just outright foul play.

All of McGregor’s potentially vast arsenal of MMA kicks, elbows, takedowns, and holds are obviously barred, and it’s widely accepted that the Irish MMA superstar would be disqualified and face a massive lawsuit from ‘Money’s’ team if he did use them in the bout. But that didn’t stop Mayweather’s father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., from reiterating that during a recent appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd (quotes via Bloody Elbow), where Sr. offered the thought that with so many people suing each other, McGregor playing dirty would be more than justified for a “big suit”:

“It’s gonna stop right there. And guess what? Then we’re gonna throw a big suit at him. There’s enough people around here suing everybody for nothing, and this is something that you can be screwed for.”

Not surprisingly, Mayweather Sr. believes any diversion from the rules in place would be due to McGregor becoming frustrated at the stifling style of his son’s legendary defensive boxing skills, a widely accepted (and justified) view that Mayweather Sr. insists has lead to his son not training as hard as he has in the past, as ‘The Notorious’ showed the world just how good (or bad) he is in his infamous sparring videos with Malignaggi:

“Like I said many times before, Floyd is better. But I’m saying here now, he’s training good enough for a guy like this. Conor, first of all, showed the whole world his egg, and I think you know what I’m talking about. And guess what, it ain’t nothing.”

NBA star LeBron James, rapper Drake and Hollywood headliner Angelina Jolie will be just some of the celebrities in attendance when Conor McGregor takes on Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas on Aug. 26.

TMZ Sports revealed a partial list of the star attendees set to witness arguably the biggest combat sports event in recent history. It will also count Denzel Washington, LL Cool J and technology pioneer Elon Musk among its spectators.

The action looks set to carry on after the bout, too, as TMZ reported there will be some of the “wildest afterparties of the year.”

The inter-combat sport showdown is expected to draw attention like few others as McGregor makes his professional boxing debut against 49-0 Mayweather, returning after almost two years retired.

The script writes itself, but while The Notorious was once offered impossible odds to emerge victorious, ESPN Stats & Info recently illustrated how his chances have steadily improved in the weeks leading up to their duel:

Other actors and actresses expected to be in attendance include Jamie Foxx, Charlize Theron and known fight fan Mark Wahlberg. The latter told JOE.ie in June he predicts a stiffer contest than some may expect:

The Aug. 26 meeting is expected to break new ground in more ways than one. The Independent’s Luke Brown reported an expected fight purse of $500 million (£390 million) is likely to be up for grabs.

Both Mayweather and McGregor tend to draw star-studded audiences to their matchups, and a meeting between the two will make for one mega-meeting of glitz and glamour.

Multiplatinum award-winning artist Justin Bieber has accompanied Money for his ring walks against Manny Pacquiao, Marcos Maidana and Canelo Alvarez, but even he recently told TMZ he doesn’t see his companion knocking McGregor out.

There’s no word as to whether Bieber will again walk alongside Mayweather at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in just over a week’s time, as if any more star power was needed at the venue.

There are sure to be a host of celebrities and stars who show up without any prior warning, with one of the biggest fights in recent history swiftly drawing in an elite crowd to match the occasion.
