Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are so close to meeting inside the squared circle.

For nearly a year a superfight between the UFC lightweight champion and the undefeated boxing legend has been discussed, and it wasn’t until recently when the fight became a potential reality. UFC President Dana White and McGregor have both confirmed that the Irishman’s side of things are done, as far as financial negotiations go, and all that awaits is Mayweather’s deal to get done.

As we previously mentioned, Mayweather was in attendance for Gervonta Davis’ (one of Mayweather’s fighters) IBF junior lightweight title defense in England over the weekend, where he was asked about potentially fighting McGregor. Mayweather stated that he believes the fight between he and “Mystic Mac” will happen (quotes via MMA Fighting):

““If me and Conor McGregor do happen to make the fight happen, which I think the fight will happen, I would love for [Davis] to be on the undercard. . . I had a great career, and my career may not be over. Number 50 may be against Conor McGregor, we’ll just wait and see.”

In the post-fight press conference, Mayweather was again asked about a possible McGregor bout and responded to McGregor coming to terms with Dana White for the fight. “Money” said that he’ll get together with his team soon and discuss what the next step is for him in his career:

“If he signed the contract – I’m over here working, I’m always working. . . When I get back over to the U.S., I’ll communicate with my team, I’ll call Al [Haymon, Mayweather’s manager], I’ll get Al and Leonard [Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions] on a business call to see what’s our next move. There’s no rush. When we do make the move, most likely it’s gonna be a huge move. You already know, when Floyd Mayweather fights, it’s history.

“If I do fight, it’s a 90 percent chance it’s against Conor McGregor.”

McGregor’s official Instagram

Mayweather continued to hype the superfight and said that he looks forward to signing his end of the deal, and looks forward to putting on another superfight for the combat sports world:

“They said Conor McGregor signed his end of the deal. I look forward to signing my end of the deal. I haven’t signed my end of the deal yet so once I get home, I’ll communicate with my team, I’ll talk with Al Haymon, I’ll talk with Leonard, and we’ll see what we come up with. We’ll put all our great minds together and we’re gonna have another superfight.”

If Mayweather and McGregor do share the ring it is sure to be a massive event – and the undefeated legend agrees:

“The next time Mayweather fights – if I fight, which most likely I will – I need a planet.”

The stage is set for one of the biggest combat sporting events of all-time, regardless of if it’s holding up the UFC in a big way. Are you exciting for the fight to finally get signed as Mayweather is teasing, or could you go without paying to see it?

Conor McGregor could possibly be stepping into the the boxing ring against Floyd Mayweather Jr. later this year and the combat sports world has mixed reviews on the subject.

One man who thinks McGregor not only should take on Mayweather inside the ring, but also pursue a career in the sport, is mixed martial arts (MMA) coach Mark Henry. Henry knows first-hand what McGregor is capable of, as he dispatched his star pupil Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden to win the UFC lightweight title.

Henry recently spoke to MMA Junkie regarding McGregor’s pursuit of Mayweather inside the squared circle, and stated that he believes the Irishman could make way more money in one boxing fight than he would in ’10 or 11 with the UFC’ (quotes via MMA Mania):

“Look, if I was Conor, I would definitely pursue the boxing, because he can make more in one fight than in 10 or 11 with the UFC,” Henry said. “But, while he’s doing it, they should definitely make another 155-pound belt, because it would be ridiculous if they didn’t.”

In addition to that, Henry also claimed that McGregor is one of the best boxers he has ever laid his eyes on, and believes “The Notorious One” has a shot against Mayweather in the first two rounds of the fight. After that, however, it’s going to be a rough night for the UFC lightweight champ:

“Conor is one of the best boxers I’ve ever seen – ever. From his precision to his power to his speed, and I think he has a shot in the first two rounds,” Henry added. “Because Mayweather, like a lot of boxers do when they’re sparring MMA guys, he may not think he’s that good.

“He might not realize how fast Conor is, and you’ve got to remember that Conor is going to be taller, longer, 13 years younger, and a southpaw. Early on, I’d give him a chance of doing some damage. But after that, it’s not going to be too good (for McGregor).”

No agreement for a bout is in place quite yet, as of this writing. Recently, however, it was announced by UFC President Dana White that McGregor’s side of the negotiations have been completed and all that remains is to sit down and negotiate with Mayweather and manager Al Haymon.

Mayweather is know for being difficult to come to an agreement with at the negotiation table, but he did recently state that he believes the fight between him and the MMA star would happen eventually.

Instagram

McGregor has already begun training for the potential contest and took to Twitter to call “Money” out and and tell him to ‘sign his end.’ Although some significant progress has been made to making the superfight happen, this is still only the beginning of the potential fight’s journey.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more…..

Although it may not be the first choice among MMA fans for Conor McGregor’s next bout, the infamous Irishman appears to be on a set course for his long-rumored boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

Word recently arrived from UFC President Dana White that McGregor had signed off on his end of the deal and talks were progressing towards negotiating with Mayweather and his management, something that we may not be exactly sure what truly entails and could certainly take a ton more time to officially get sorted out.

The legendary Mayweather is notoriously tough to negotiate with, as his oft-discussed bout with Manny Pacquiao was bickered over for years before it finally happened in 2015 when both fighters were out of their true athletic primes and the resulting product left much to be desired. Indeed Mayweather always wants all of the specifics to be in his favor whenever he signs on for a high-profile bout, but at this point in time, McGregor may actually be the bigger star than the 40-year-old “Money.”

So things could still move at a snail’s pace, so McGregor challenged Mayweather to get moving and sign his end of the bargain in a post to his official Instagram account today:

Solid work today. Sign your end Floyd or you are just a mouth.

It’s a hardline stance from McGregor, who understandably wants the rumored nine-figure payday that comes with boxing arguably the greatest boxer of all-time in the undefeated Mayweather. For the UFC and MMA as a whole, it may not be as great, however, if the sport’s biggest star was thoroughly demolished by a boxing great who is out of his prime as most are predicting will happen.

There’s also the issue of the talented lightweight division currently being on hold and being held up for much longer if McGregor doesn’t defend his championship inside the octagon this year. Those issues probably don’t matter to McGregor, but they certainly could become detrimental to the promotion as a whole in the coming months.

The UFC is kind of hamstrung by their need for big-name fights, so they have to roll with McGregor vs. Mayweather as it’s clearly their best chance for a huge payday during a down year in 2017. If that’s a good thing for MMA remains to be seen.

First things first, though, and Mayweather obviously has to maneuver his way through the negotiations in order to actually make it to the fight, something that could realistically be many months away if it ever happens. Do you believe the always-choosy Mayweather is close to signing on to fight McGregor, or is the build-up simply reaching an all-time high without much to show for it?

It’s looking like the Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather fight may just happen.

Last week it was announced that UFC President Dana White and lightweight champ Conor McGregor had come to terms on an agreement for the Irishman’s side of negotiations for the superfight. All that remains is for White to meet with Mayweather and manager Al Haymon to get a deal done for “Money’s” side of things.

Yesterday (Sat. May 20, 2017) Mayweather was in attendance for an IBF super featherweight bout between Gervonta Davis and Liam Walsh in London. During the post-fight press conference Mayweather was asked about the possibility of fighting McGregor, to which he replied he believes the fight is going to happen (quotes via The Score):

“If me and Conor McGregor do happen to make the fight happen, which I think the fight will happen, I would love for (Davis) to be on the undercard,” Mayweather said.

” … I had a great career, and my career may not be over. Number 50 may be against Conor McGregor, we’ll just wait and see.”

Mayweather has been retired from in-ring competition since his 2015 unanimous decision win over Andre Berto, where he stepped away from the sport with an unblemished record of 49-0. “Money” has stated on multiple occasions that he is happily retired as of now, but the only fight he’d consider coming out of retirement for is against McGregor.

The brash Irishman has taken the combat sports world by storm after having accomplished a plethora of historical feats under the UFC’s banner in such a short period of time. McGregor defeated Jose Aldo, a longtime featherweight champion who hadn’t lost in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition for over a decade, in only 13 seconds.

He followed that up with a spectacular rivalry at welterweight against Nate Diaz, before becoming the first dual-weight champion in UFC history with his second round knockout win over Eddie Alvarez in Madison Square Garden.

A fight between two of the combat sports world’s biggest stars is certain to draw a tremendous amount of attention and cash, two things both McGregor and Mayweather treasure. The pair have been exchanging barbs at one another throughout the media, and with a deal being so close in regards to making the fight happen, it should be interesting to see them hash things out inside the squared circle.

While many give McGregor little to no chance competing against Mayweather inside the boxing ring, rightfully so seeing as though he has never fought in a professional boxing fight in his life, “Notorious” is known for his ability to silence doubters on a regular basis.

Many doubted his ability to get past the likes of Chad Mendes, Jose Aldo, Nate Diaz, and Eddie Alvarez, making the bout against Mayweather an intriguing one for those who have followed the Irishman’s career closely.

If McGregor and Mayweather do find themselves standing opposite each other inside the ring, it will be the biggest combat sporting event of this era.
