Daniel Cormier has not made it a secret that he only has a few fights left in him.

One of those fights will be his upcoming UFC heavyweight title defense against Stipe Miocic. Cormier and Miocic will headline the UFC 241 pay-per-view (PPV) on August 17 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The first time around, Cormier defeated the Cleveland native via first-round knockout to capture the heavyweight strap.

His goal at the time of the first contest was to become a UFC double champion, as he held the light heavyweight title heading into the bout. Now that he is no longer the champion at 205 pounds, and is only the heavyweight title holder, the motivation for Cormier has changed (via MMA Junkie):

“Ultimately, it’s always about winning the fight,” Cormier said. “Get the job done, but if there’s any way to improve, then try to improve. I mean, can I find a submission? Can I find a way to take advantage of the same type of mistake that he may have made prior?

“I spoke about a mistake that Stipe made constantly, consistently, and I was able to capitalize on it but maybe there’s something else we’re seeing that we didn’t have to do last fight that I can use in this one,” Cormier added. “There are a lot of different ways to try and win a fight.”

If he is able to get past Miocic, Cormier has eluded that it could very well be the last fight of his career. However, “DC” teased a possible fight with knockout artist Francis Ngannou if he can get past Junior dos Santos this weekend:

“I don’t see past Stipe Miocic so if I get passed Miocic and I go, ‘I want to do this again,’ then maybe I do go and beat Ngannou if he won his fight,” Cormier said. “Getting through this one is what needs to happen and I’m trying to solely focus on this fight.”

Francis Ngannou has made it known yet again that he wants to fight Jon Jones.

The heavyweight title contender elaborated on his mindset while doing a recent interview to promote his next fight. This is of course if he can win his next bout, and if Jones will move up to the heavyweight division:

“Personally, I mean, it would be a good fight, first of all for the fans, for me, yes,” Ngannou told TMZ Sports. “Even though Jon Jones is a light heavyweight, this guy has made his legacy, dominating the whole division. He’s a big dude. I met him once, we almost, we are the same height, we are almost the same thing.

I might just have a few pounds on him. That would be a legit fight. I mean the fight makes sense, it’s very legit. I’m here for it. I’m here for the challenge, but I just want to take things one at a time. I don’t want to mix them up. But yes, I would definitely want that fight.

The former title contender is slated to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos at the UFC Minneapolis show in the headliner on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

On the flip side, Jones makes his next title defense as UFC light heavyweight champion Thiago Santos in the main event of the upcoming UFC 239 pay-per-view (PPV) event. The show is set to take place on Saturday, July 6, 2019, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With their fights being as close as they are, it’s possible that a fight between Jones and Ngannou can get booked. The big question is if Jones wants to make the move to heavyweight. Aside from Ngannou at heavyweight, there’s the always entertaining third fight between Jones and UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier to be made.

Former heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos believes a win over Francis Ngannou will earn him another crack at the title. However, he is not willing to wait in case it doesn’t.

Dos Santos takes on Ngannou in the headliner of UFC Minneapolis this weekend. A win for “Cigano” would make it four straight wins, following triumphs over Blagoy Ivanov, Tai Tuivasa and Derrick Lewis. With no other contender likely to more be deserving of a title shot than him if that were the case, Dos Santos believes there is nowhere to go but to challenge the heavyweight champion.

But that doesn’t mean he will just sit on the sidelines and wait for a title shot either:

“Actually, there is nowhere to go after this. The winner of this fight will [fight] for the title,” Dos Santos told MMA Junkie. “But sometimes the UFC, they invent some things, you know? But I don’t really care about that. Of course, my main goal is the belt. I want to become champion again, but I’m not in a rush for that, you know? The most important thing is to keep fighting, keep myself active, having like three fights per year, minimum.”

Dos Santos has been more active than in previous years and hopes to keep things that way. He particularly cited an example of how instead of waiting to challenge an injured Cain Velasquez for the title, he opted to remain active by facing Shane Carwin.

He would defeat Carwin before famously knocking out Velasquez to become champion back in 2011:

“The first time I fought for title, I was supposed to fight Cain Velasquez,” Dos Santos explained. “Cain Velasquez got hurt against Brock Lesnar, so I couldn’t fight him, he was out one year. They said, ‘Oh, you can wait that whole one year to fight him for the belt, or you can have another fight.’ I said, ‘No, I need another fight.’ Then Dana White brought me the chance to be coach on ‘TUF,’ then I fight Shane Carwin. So, I’m not going to do waiting for fights, man. I’m 35 years old. The last five years I do fight once per year, now I want to do minimum of three.”

Dos Santos Questions Ngannou’s Skill Level

Of course, Dos Santos still needs to put away Ngannou who seems to be back to his devastating old self following recent finishes over Curtis Blaydes and Velasquez. “The Predator” is known for his power, but Dos Santos questions his skill level more than anything:

“I never fought him, so I don’t really know how powerful he is,” Dos Santos added. “But everyone is talking about him. As I can see his last fights, he has a lot of power. But the thing is sometimes too much power without the right amount of control is not really good thing, you know? So I believe he has a lot of power, but skill-wise he is not that level.”
