Mark Hunt has the unfortunate distinction of having fought at least three UFC fighters who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.

Frank Mir, Brock Lesnar, and “Bigfoot” Silva all tested positive for various kinds of steroids after fighting Hunt, and the Australian has been on a warpath against cheaters ever since.

Regardless, Hunt has become one of the most recognizable faces in the UFC, with a knockout-or-be-knocked-out mentality that has earned him fans all over the world.

Hunt wrote an impassioned statement to Players Voice about his fighting career, the cheaters he’s encountered, and the damage done:

“I’ve been fighting since I was a child, fighting to get out of my circumstances. I used to make $300 a week, struggling to put food on the table but I have become one of the highest-paid fighters in the world. I feel that’s destiny. This is what I’m supposed to be doing and if I die fighting, that’s fine. I just hope that if it does happen, it will be in an honest and fair competition.

“My body is f**ked but my mind is still here. I’ve still got my senses about me and I know what’s right and wrong, which is the main thing. Sometimes I don’t sleep well. You can hear me starting to stutter and slur my words. My memory is not that good anymore. I’ll forget something I did yesterday but I can remember the s**t I did years and years ago. That’s just the price I’ve paid – the price of being a fighter. But I’ve fought a lot of drug cheats and copped a lot of punishment from guys who were cheating and that’s not right.”

While Hunt did knock out Mir, he took some serious punishment in a loss to Lesnar and his draw with “Bigfoot” in a fight many consider to be one of the best (and most violent) heavyweight fight in UFC history.

Yet Hunt himself doesn’t feel that way, especially considering Silva popped for steroids after their draw, only to be knocked out cold by Hunt in their rematch at UFC 193.

“Everyone says the first Bigfoot fight is one of the greatest heavyweight bouts of all time, but not for me. It’s stained. That guy ruined everything. You take away his juice and he’s nothing. The first fight we had, we nearly killed each other. The second fight, when he was clean, he didn’t even last a round. He wasn’t the same person as the one that almost frigging killed me.”

Hunt placed the blame on the UFC as well, linking low fighter pay with the incentive to cheat for a bigger payday:

“Even the champion, Stipe Miocic, is asking for more money. How the hell can the champion of the world be asking for a pay rise? Gegard Mousasi is another one. He moved to Bellator and it’s because these guys aren’t getting what they’re worth and they don’t know what the company is making off them.

“I’m just speaking the truth; a lot of fighters are scared to.”

Mark Hunt: I Don’t Think Brock Lesnar Can Take Me Down

A stacked UFC 200 card lays just around the corner on July 9, with 17 of the 24 stars having headlined a card in the past, six former champions and three current champs (if you count Jon Jones’ interim belt). One fight that’s been getting masses of attention, quite rightly, is the heavyweight showdown between Mark Hunt and Brock Lesnar. The former heavyweight champion and WWE star revealed he’d be taking on ‘The Super Samoan’ after his image was shown in a teaser trailer during the broadcast of UFC 199.

Hunt’s storied MMA career has now led him to a massive fight with Lesnar, and in terms of pay-per-view attraction it could well help shatter the pay-per-view record. As well as numbers, the fight holds a lot of weight for ‘The Super Samoan’s’ future, as the undeniable twilight of his career could be irreversibly altered if he is to fall to ‘The Beast.’

Mark Hunt

The story behind Lesnar’s revival of his mixed martial arts career revival is apparently down to his undying motivation to fight again. Some argue that the WWE crossover is simply looking for another payday, but Hunt’s intentions are, as usual, worn much more on his sleeve. The heavy-handed former K-1 champion is still hungry for a UFC title shot, and has stated his desire to ‘knock Brock’s lips off his face’ come July 9.

In a recent interview with AXS TV’s Inside MMA, Hunt tells Bas Rutten and guest host Josh Barnett that he’s been training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Nevada, and feels his wrestling defense is good enough to stave off the larger man’s attacks at UFC 200. Check out the video, and the transcribe is courtesy of MMAMania.
“That’s probably the reason why people are watching, it’s Brock, Brock, Brock, Brock. That’s cool by me. I’m looking forward to the fight and to just be fighting Brock. He’s a huge name in sports, a lot of people are probably going to watch this fight because he’s on the card. It’s good for my stock as well. It’s great.”

“I don’t really care about whatever is happening with the testing, I’m looking at fighting and winning the fight,” added Hunt. “I mean it does nothing for my rankings, but it does everything for my profile, of course, because he’s such a big name.”

“I don’t really think he can take me down, and if he does I believe I can just get back up anyway.”

A win for Mark Hunt will put him on three straight for the UFC, with knockout wins over Antonio Silva and Frank Mir in recent memory, but will it earn him his shot at the championship title?

Mixed martial arts heavyweight legends collide at UFC Fight Night 85 this weekend (Saturday March 19) in Brisbane, Australia as Mark Hunt and Frank Mir go at it. Both men have storied careers that ran parallel but never crossed over paths until this point, with Mir as the former UFC heavyweight champion and poster boy of the promotion, and Hunt mostly making his name in the glory days of Japanese MMA and also as a decorated K-1 kickboxer.

Now with the two finally set to meet for the first time in their illustrious timelines, we’ve seen quite a jovial rivalry up until this point. An extremely rare complimentary trash talk video can be seen at the end of this article, but has certainly been overshadowed by Frank Mir’s most recent comments. Check out what the heavyweight submission specialist told MMAJunkie.com during a recent interview. It’s chilling.

mir story

“I love leg locks and heel hooks and kneebars. They’re complex and hard to avoid. I feel like if we get down to the ground, defending his legs is going to be very difficult, especially because his main concern is getting up – not worrying about his feet.”

“I have the hip drive that when I grab something, it’s not going to be uncomfortable. He’s going to have to make the decision of it he wants to continue fighting or go ahead and lose that fight. When I say continue fighting, I mean if he taps, he can continue on (with his career). Kneebars and heel hooks at his age could take him out of competition for an extremely long time.”

“Even when we’re striking, I feel very comfortable that I’ll be winning the MMA aspect of the standup fight,” Mir said. “That’s because there’s takedowns involved. Mark can’t just come in and throw a four-piece combination and a low kick. He has to be worried about me grabbing his leg and taking him down and fighting his way back up. It changes the striking aspect. For my striking, I’ve learned to adapt it right off the bat for MMA. Even my jiu-jitsu, I adapt it very much for MMA.”

“I’ve finished fights from my feet, I’ve finished fights with my ground-and-pound, and I’ve finished fights from my back with a submission, from top with submission,” Mir said. “You name it, and I’ve finished a fight that way. Mark can’t the same thing. If he hasn’t finished the fight by knockout or TKO, how can he finish the fight?”

So, in short, the message from Mir is tap and you can continue fighting, if not, it may be the end of Mark Hunt’s fighting career. So much for the fun and games we were first seeing between these two legends of the game.

Mark-Hunt-1200

In closing, we could well see the end of either man’s career on Saturday down under, as a loss at this stage, particularly a brutal finish, could well mark the conclusion of their long stints as mixed martial artists. Let’s hope not.

Legendary heavyweight knockout artist Mark “The Super Samoan” Hunt is currently ranked No. 7 in the divisional rankings, but has only won one of his last three bouts.

After being knocked out by reigning champion Fabricio Werdum back at UFC 180 in Mexico City, Hunt received an absolutely brutal beating at the hands of Stipe Miocic last May. However, the veteran has since bounced back with an impressive knockout victory over Antonio Silva at UFC 193 last May.

At 41 years of age, time is running out for Hunt in terms of title runs, but his devastating power has kept him relevant within the fight game for years now. That along with “The Super Samoan’s” apparent willingness to die inside of the Octagon, could give him a solid chance when he faces off with former champion Frank Mir at UFC Fight Night 84 this March:

“You’re not gonna live forever. You’re gonna die like everyone else. But to be honest, no I don’t care what happens to me. I mean, I don’t really care what happens to Mark Hunt. I mean, we’re all destined to die, that’s for sure. So if I die doing what I love to do, that’s fine. So be it, I’m happy. I think Frank Mir is gonna be trying to take me down and I’m gonna be knocking him out. So I think after he realizes that he can’t take me down, then he’ll end up being knocked out, like the rest of them (laughs).” Hunt told Submission Radio.

Those are some deep words from the former K-1 world champion, but words that truly display Hunt’s heart, determination, and warrior spirit.

“The Super Samoan” will have a tough test in front of him in Australia, however, as Mir is one of the best submission artists that the heavyweight division has ever seen. The former champion is coming off of a rather lackluster decision loss to Andrei Arlovski last September, but had compiled two straight knockout wins prior to that.

Which heavyweight will come out on top on fight night?

The UFC has added an intriguing welterweight scrap to UFC Fight Night 84 which is set to go down on March 19, 2016 live from Brisbane, Australia.

Promotional officials announced today (January 18, 2016) (Via Bloody Elbow) that former Bellator champion Hector Lombard will take on No. 8-ranked Neil Magny in the evening’s co-main event.

Lombard will be making his first appearance since January 2015 when he scored a victory over Josh Burkman at UFC 182. That win was later changed to a no contest, however, when “Showeather” tested positive for performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs).

He was handed a year-long suspension and will look to get back to his winning ways against Magny. Prior to the bout with Burkman, Lombard had won two straight over Nate Marquardt and Jake Shields.

Magny on the other hand, was riding a super impressive seven fight win streak before being submitted by grappling guru Demian Maia last August. He has since bounced back with two consecutive wins of his own over Erick Silva and Kelvin Gastelum, and will look to extend his win streak in March.

UFC Fight Night 84 will be headlined by a clash of heavyweight legends as former champion Frank Mir meets heavy handed slugger Mark Hunt.
