Mark Hunt has the unfortunate distinction of having fought at least three UFC fighters who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs.

Frank Mir, Brock Lesnar, and “Bigfoot” Silva all tested positive for various kinds of steroids after fighting Hunt, and the Australian has been on a warpath against cheaters ever since.

Regardless, Hunt has become one of the most recognizable faces in the UFC, with a knockout-or-be-knocked-out mentality that has earned him fans all over the world.

Hunt wrote an impassioned statement to Players Voice about his fighting career, the cheaters he’s encountered, and the damage done:

“I’ve been fighting since I was a child, fighting to get out of my circumstances. I used to make $300 a week, struggling to put food on the table but I have become one of the highest-paid fighters in the world. I feel that’s destiny. This is what I’m supposed to be doing and if I die fighting, that’s fine. I just hope that if it does happen, it will be in an honest and fair competition.

“My body is f**ked but my mind is still here. I’ve still got my senses about me and I know what’s right and wrong, which is the main thing. Sometimes I don’t sleep well. You can hear me starting to stutter and slur my words. My memory is not that good anymore. I’ll forget something I did yesterday but I can remember the s**t I did years and years ago. That’s just the price I’ve paid – the price of being a fighter. But I’ve fought a lot of drug cheats and copped a lot of punishment from guys who were cheating and that’s not right.”

While Hunt did knock out Mir, he took some serious punishment in a loss to Lesnar and his draw with “Bigfoot” in a fight many consider to be one of the best (and most violent) heavyweight fight in UFC history.

Yet Hunt himself doesn’t feel that way, especially considering Silva popped for steroids after their draw, only to be knocked out cold by Hunt in their rematch at UFC 193.

“Everyone says the first Bigfoot fight is one of the greatest heavyweight bouts of all time, but not for me. It’s stained. That guy ruined everything. You take away his juice and he’s nothing. The first fight we had, we nearly killed each other. The second fight, when he was clean, he didn’t even last a round. He wasn’t the same person as the one that almost frigging killed me.”

Hunt placed the blame on the UFC as well, linking low fighter pay with the incentive to cheat for a bigger payday:

“Even the champion, Stipe Miocic, is asking for more money. How the hell can the champion of the world be asking for a pay rise? Gegard Mousasi is another one. He moved to Bellator and it’s because these guys aren’t getting what they’re worth and they don’t know what the company is making off them.

“I’m just speaking the truth; a lot of fighters are scared to.”

BREAKING: Brock Lesnar Flagged By USADA For Potential Anti-Doping Violation

Given that Lesnar had announced his return just weeks before the landmark event, however, he was granted an exception to that rule by the UFC. Lesnar has also been questioned regarding performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs) due to his freakish physique, but he had never tested positive for any type of steroid – that is until now.

According to a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, “The Beast” has been flagged by USADA for a potential anti-doping violation stemming from a test administered on June 28, 2016:

USADA had claimed that they had intensely tested Lesnar leading up to UFC 200, and it appears as if they have found something. This marks the second massive ‘bust’ by USADA regarding UFC 200, as scheduled headliner Jon Jones was pulled from the card just days prior after being notified of a potential anti-doping violation as well.

UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock has an interesting view on the PED issue in MMA. “The World’s Most Dangerous Man” actually feels as if PEDs should be regulated and allowed on a ‘safe level’:

“Listen I think it’s pretty clear. I’ve taken a stance on it. My stance has always been upfront that this needs to be regulated. It needs to be a point where guys can use it at a safe level, because it does help. It does help in your health, and it does help in your recovery.” Shamrock said on Inside MMA.

Continuing on, Shamrock, who has tested positive for PEDs before, also implied that the UFC has allowed performance-enhancing-drug use for years:

“I just don’t see how they’re gonna stop something that they’ve allowed to happen for so long. I think my biggest anger with this is that it seems like everybody wants you to believe that their heads were stuck in the sand when all this was going on and then when something like this happens, their heads pop up out of the sand and they go, ‘Oh my gosh I can’t believe that happened! How dare you! You’re such a bad person! I’m so angry at you!’ And the reality of it is that everybody knows it’s going on in almost every sport across the United States.”

Leading up to his highly-anticipated bout, Masvidal spoke up on the use of performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs) in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), claiming that a plethora of steroid users were seriously affected by the UFC signing on with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA):

“This is gonna hurt a lot of people’s feelings, but I like to say the truth, so let the truth be told,” said Masvidal in a recent appearance on The Three Amigos podcast (transcribed by Bloody Elbow). “I don’t do steroids. I didn’t do steroids when I was first in this sport, and I don’t do them now. That’s a big reason why I’m still getting better. A lot of these guys that were on the steroids and the PEDs…when USADA came in, these guys were running out the door trying to dodge the test. That wasn’t me.”

Not only does Masvidal insist that he’s never taken PEDs, but he had a rather strange opinion on those who have taken PEDs and are now attempting to ween off of them, comparing them to ‘women that gave birth’:

“A lot of these motherf*ckers can’t do those things that were getting them over the top and getting them the big paychecks and all these endorsements from supplement companies anymore,” added Masvidal. “Now you look at their bodies, they look like women that gave birth, you know? These dudes are supposed to be pro athletes, and you look at them now when they compete, and you’re like, “What the f*ck happened to so-and-so?” You look back at them six months ago, before USADA came in the building, this dude looked like a juggernaut. Now he don’t. I’m so thankful I never messed with that stuff.”

In closing, Masvidal praised the new and improved stricter drug testing, saying that fighters who felt invincible are no longer on top without the use of PEDs:

“I’ve had injuries in the past, but it hasn’t been those crazy-ass injuries that you hear about because people were juiced out of their minds doing things that they’re not supposed to,” said Masvidal. “A lot of those dudes that were in PRIDE, over there in Japan doing that craziness, when they came over here, you didn’t see them shining like that anymore, because it was somewhat regulated over here. They would test here and there, but now with USADA, everything changed. Motherf*ckers that thought that they were invincible, they’re finding out real quick that they’re far from it.”

Title talks were put on hold, however, when it was reported a few weeks back that Romero was flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for a potential violation to their guidelines.

Remaining relatively quiet since, Romero’s B-Sample was sent out for further testing, and although it returned positive, he and his manager, Malki Kawa, appeared on today’s (February 8, 2016) edition of the MMA Hour to explain the mishap.

Kawa explained that Romero tested positive for a substance that was not listed on the label of a supplement he was taking:

“The substance has a label with a bunch of stuff on it,” Kawa said. “None of that is illegal to take. What he got popped for is not on the label. So it’s obviously not his fault that he popped for this.”

Despite the explanation, “The Soldier of God” did indeed fail a drug test, and as a result, he could be facing up to a two year suspension, although Kawa doesn’t necessarily see that happening:

“I don’t expect it to be two years,” Kawa said. “I don’t think two years would be fair.”

In the end, however, the manager, admitted that it is the responsibility of the fighter to know what he’s taking:

“He did take the supplement,” Kawa said. “If you take a supplement, you run the risk of this happening. The responsibility does fall on Yoel.”

Romero reiterated this statement as well:

“I think it’s my responsibility when I take something. But I think maybe a public warning [would be a fair punishment]. I don’t know. … Nobody knows. When you see the supplement, outside it says it’s clean, you can take it.”

USADA also provided a statement on the issue via Bleacher Report’s Jeremy Botter:

“Given that Mr. Romero has publicly discussed his case, we can confirm that he did test positive for a prohibited substance. At this time we are investigating the circumstances surrounding his positive test to determine the appropriate outcome, in accordance with the rules. It is also to remember that there is a full and fair legal process to handle the adjudication of any case, and all athletes are provided full due to process before any decision is reached.”
