On This Day in MMA History

(Back when Ken was making more than GSP…)

The TUF 11 Finale went down 1 year ago.

Why it matters:

Five of the fighters from the show are still active in the UFC and four are undefeated in the Octagon.

TUF winner Court McGee, who defeated Kris McCray in the finale by rear naked choke also beat Ryan Jensen by arm triangle at UFC 121 in October. He’s set to face Don Yi Yang at UFN “Battle at the Bayou” in September.

Kyle Noke, who was beaten by teammate McCray by unanimous decision in the quarterfinals of the show, defeated Josh Bryant by TKO at the finale and rattled off two rear naked choke submission wins against Rob Kimmons at UFC 122 in November and TUF 11 cast mate Chris Camozzi at UFC 127 at home in Australia in February. He’ll face Tom Lawlor next at UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle in August.

Brad Tavares, who lost to McGee in the semi-finals by rear naked choke is undefeated in official competition as well as 2-0 in the Octagon. He defeated TUF 11 quarterfinal opponent Seth Baczynski at the finale by unanimous decision and Phil Baroni by knockout at UFC 125 in January.

Nick Ring, who was forced out of the competition due to a lingering knee injury that also left him unable to compete at the finale is undefeated in his MMA career and is 2-0 in the UFC with a February UFC 127 unanimous decision win over Riki Fukuda and a UFC 131 rear naked choke win over James Head at last weekend’s UFC 131.

Cage Potato TUF 11 guest blogger Rich Attonito beat Rafael Natal at the finale and lost a hard-fought decision to Dave Branch at the TUF 12 Finale in December. He squares off with Daniel Roberts next week at UFC Live: Marquardt vs. Story.

Strikeforce Challengers: Villasenor vs. Cyborg went down two years ago.

Why it matters:

The card, which featured a ton of talent was one of Strikeforce’s “B” show’s best. Tim Kennedy made his debut with the promotion on the card, as did Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos. Kennedy defeated Nick Thompson via tapout due to strikes, while Santos dropped a split decision to Joey Vilasenor.

Also on the card were future SF women’s welterweight champion Sarah Kaufman, Dennis Hallman, Lyle Beerbohm, Luke Rockhold, Conor Heun and Duane Ludwig.

UFC 48: Payback went down 7 years ago.

Why it matters:

Georges St-Pierre and Matt Hughes both earned a shot at the vacant UFC welterweight title with their respective wins over Jay Hieron and Renato Verissimo.

Frank Mir won the vacant UFC heavyweight strap by defeating (and breaking the arm of) Tim Sylvia. Three months later he was in a serious motorcycle accident in which he broke his leg in several places. He didn’t compete again until nearly two years after winning the belt. Two years later he won the interim title by defeating Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira by TKO at UFC 92 in December 2008, but failed to unify the belts by beating Brock Lesnar seven months later at UFC 100 in July 2009. An impressive unanimous decision win last month over Roy Nelson at UFC 130 has elevated him back to contender status.

Evan Tanner defeated Phil Baroni for the second time in as many fights. One more win over Robbie Lawler (via triangle) at UFC 50 earned Tanner a shot at the vacant UFC middleweight strap, which he won by beating highly-touted David Terrell at UFC 51 by first-round TKO.

Ken Shamrock beat Kimo Leopolda by first-round TKO (knee). The fight would be Kimo’s last in the Octagon. Shamrock made $170,000 for the bout (including a $50,000 win bonus), while Kimo took home $55,000. St-Pierre, who was on the undercard, made $8,000, including a $4,000 win bonus.

Mike Swick was born 31 years ago.

Why he matters:

Of the 16 contestants from the show, only seven are still in the UFC. Although he hasn’t enjoyed the same level of success as cast mates like Forrest Griffin, Josh Koscheck, Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian or Chris Leben, Swick, like Stephan Bonnar, has some personal victories to his credit.

Beating a former number one contender like David Loiseau like he did at UFC 63 was a huge upset. Beating the career-threatening stomach ailment that hindered his training and ability to put on and cut weight is another notch in his belt. Although his job with the UFC is at risk coming off two straight losses, a year and a half away from the game spent training in places like Thailand and medical treatment to cure his misdiagnosed dyspepsia will hopefully have done the welterweight good and help to rejuvenate his career.

His next fight is against Erick Silva at UFC 134 in Rio in August.

Frank Mir sat down with for a radio interview with Josh Gross from ESPN this week and discussed some different topics currently taking place in the MMA world.

Mir discussed many topics, including how he would like the opportunity to fight Fedor and that he has always wanted to do so. He also stated that he would like to fight Alistair Overeem and praised him for his K-1 wins.

Mir talked about the size differences in the UFC heavyweight division and how it shouldn’t be about just being a giant, being light, or whatever is trending. He just said that you should fight at the best weight that suits your style and made a few comparisons about what works for people.

Getting into the actual questions and quotes that I found interesting were as follows.

Mir was asked about how his win over Roy Nelson affects him and he replied,

“I think it keeps me right there in the talk about moving up. Strategically, though, I’m still one fight away if I want to be in a title fight. Obviously, dos Santos is fighting next for the title versus Velasquez and so, you know, hopefully I’ll be looking for one more fight before that. Maybe right now would be a good idea to try to fight (Shane) Carwin, you know, I’m coming off two wins in a row and he’s coming off two losses, I guess there’s a good argument for having a rematch where even though he won the first bout I’m the way up and he’s having a bit of a speed bump.”

He followed that up with saying how he has improved since his last fight with Carwin and wanting to get back into the Octagon as soon as possible. He said,

“Taking a off of couple weeks and get right back into training. Any time, you know, September would be a great time to get back in there. Really, honestly, if I could fight three times a year I think that would be best as far as staying active and not pushing yourself too much to where you’re not able to recover from injuries or any kind of training between fights”

Mir also discussed Brock Lesnar and what Lesnar is going through.

“Oh, I definitely do (feel sympathy for Brock). I mean, right now, what he’s going through is not having to do with us as competitors competing in the Octagon, you know, he’s a father, a husband, and he’s having health issues. I don’t wish that on anybody. I hope that he’s able to recover and provide a lifestyle for his family that they’re used to. That’s something that, you know, I have complete empathy for. I can’t imagine being in the same situation right now as far as, you know, being a father.”

Mir’s final comments were on the Junior Dos Santos/Cain Velasquez fight.

“I’m still not completely sold on dos Santos. (He hasn’t seen the UFC 131 fight between JDS/Carwin). I don’t know how well-rounded he is. Velasquez right now, though, I think is a hard match-up for everybody. I think he posses the one tool that is every heavyweight’s Achilles heel and that’s his cardio. It’s amazing that he has cardio on the same level as most Welterweights that are at the top of their cardio game. He’s shown to be extremely well-rounded as far as hands, take-downs. He threw Brock Lesnar around like a rag doll, I couldn’t believe it, I mean he out-struck him obviously but he picked him up and threw him down and I was blown away by that. Also, Brock with all that size and power couldn’t even hold him down once he had taken him down. So, right now, I’m pretty much if you tell me Cain Velasquez and anybody to name on the other end of that roster, I would bet on Cain Velasquez.”

Anderson Silva: Who Is He Going to Fight Next, Assuming He Beats Yushin Okami?

It is probably unfair to ask this question so far in advance as there are still 74 days until UFC 134 in Rio takes place. The main event of that fight card will feature Anderson Silva defending his middleweight belt for the ninth time, this time against Yushin Okami.

But when you aren’t completely satisfied with a fight, your mind will tend to wander. Nothing against Okami who is a perfectly adroit fighter, boasting an impressive 10-2 record inside the Octagon with his only losses coming to Rich Franklin and Chael Sonnen.

And technically, he was the last man to beat Silva. But we all know that is “fools gold” as Silva was on his way to victory before being disqualified because of an illegal upkick. So assuming all goes according to plan, Silva will extend his record for most consecutive victories in the UFC to fourteen.

So, without sounding too disinterested, what’s next?

How about that picture? If that doesn’t tell you I am moving up in the world then I don’t know what does! The Hot Seat is back and this time we will focus on UFC 131: Carwin vs. Dos Santos which will take place this Saturday night from Vancouver.

Dos Santos was originally scheduled to face former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar with the winner getting the next shot at current champion Cain Velasquez, but Lesnar was once again felled by diverticulitis and forced to withdraw from the bout.

So in steps the returning Shane Carwin, the former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion who himself is coming back from neck surgery. Carwin was scheduled to take on UFC newcomer Jon Olav Einemo, but jumped at the opportunity to participate in a number one contenders bout.

I recently had an opportunity to interview Carwin and he is as focused as ever and ready to move one step closer to winning the heavyweight title. He is very confident and for good reason, he hits like a mack truck. He is one of the sports truly good guys and deserves all the success he attains.

UFC News: Dana White on Roy Nelson—"The Fat Thing Was Funny for a Minute"

After conducting a meeting with Roy Nelson, the two sides seem to be a standstill and haven’t come to a decision regarding Nelson’s future within the UFC.

FightersOnly.co.uk reports that one of the topics the two sides discussed was Nelson’s weight issues. Simply put, White insisted Nelson lose his infamous belly. However, the rotund heavyweight thinks otherwise.

“I said, ‘The fat thing was funny for a minute. It’s not funny anymore’,” White said.

Nelson has picked up back-to back losses in his last two of three bouts, losing to Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir. Following his bout with Mir at UFC 130, White wasn’t pleased in either competitor’s performance and he planned on further discussing that matter with Nelson last week.

“It is hard to talk to a guy that has performed at the level he has with that weight. He felt like he had one bad fight and everybody jumped on him,” he said.

It was expected for either Nelson or Mir, that the winner would receive a step up in competition and be close to a title shot. But after his last two performances, it doesn’t look appear that Nelson will be competing for a title shot anytime soon, as the UFC boss is concerned with Nelson’s personal health which could be detrimental to his career.

“When you get into these big fights with guys that mean something and you don’t win, maybe you need to change something up,” he said.
