Although he hasn’t fought since he vacated his title in 2013 following a highly controversial split decision win over Johny Hendricks, former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre announced late last week that he had inked a new deal with the promotion and would finally be returning to the Octagon he once ruled.

His return fight has not yet been set, but there are no shortage of opponents waiting for St. Pierre, as he still remains one of the biggest names in the sport.

He was in talks to fight middleweight champion Michael Bisping late last year, which is still an option, as is a potential superfight with lightweight champion Conor McGregor. Both of these options interest his coach, Firas Zahabi, who recently offered his opinion on the sure-to-be-hot topic:

“My ideal scenario, I don’t know if it’s still up for grabs, but I was really happy when there was a buzzing of Bisping or McGregor,” Zahabi told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “I thought those two would be two epic fights. One, he would go a little lower [in weight]; one, he would go a little higher. But those are really, really intriguing fights. Of course, Tyron Woodley, he’s the [welterweight] champion and et cetera, but he has his fight with ‘Wonderboy’ [Thompson]. And if ‘Wonderboy’ wins, then they’ll have a trilogy. And of course we don’t want to fight with ‘Wonderboy,’ we go way back together.

“So I think the welterweight title is not really something he (St-Pierre) is thinking about right now because of the current landscape, but there is always the 185-pound belt. And of course, McGregor is such a mega-star that if you put those two on a main event, I don’t think that anybody in the world wouldn’t watch that. I think that even non-MMA fans would watch that. But again, I don’t do the match-ups, I don’t do the managing, I’m just talking as a trainer.”

Do either of these options interest you, or would you rather St. Pierre face a different opponent in his long-awaited comeback fight?

Earlier this week, it was reported that former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre had finally agreed to terms with the promotion, which could mean his long-awaited return to action is coming soon.

St. Pierre hasn’t competed since 2013, and apparently he was in serious talks with the UFC regarding a return fight late last year, but negotiations went south.

If St. Pierre is indeed ready to return to the Octagon he once ruled, many big fights will await him and perhaps one of the most lucrative would be a bout between him and legendary former middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, believes the bout makes the most sense:

“GSP vs. Anderson is something I feel makes the most sense for everyone,” Soares told Bloody Elbow. “Two of the greatest of all time fighting is good for the fans, the UFC, and for both athletes. This would make everyone a lot of money and it’s a fight MMA fans all over the world would want to watch.”

Many wanted to see the two fight during their primes when they were on top of their respective divisions, but the fight is still a possibility. After losing his 185-pound title to Chris Weidman in 2013, Silva went 0-3-1 before finally getting back to his winning ways with a somewhat controversial decision victory over Derek Brunson at last weekend’s UFC 208.

Coach: GSP Is Still Top P4P Fighter In The World

After vacating his long held UFC welterweight title back in 2013 and entering a semi-retirement of sorts, Georges St. Pierre was rumored to be finally returning at last weekend’s (Dec. 10, 2016) UFC 206 from his home of Canada, but he announced in the weeks leading up to the event that negotiations with the promotion

After vacating his long held UFC welterweight title back in 2013 and entering a semi-retirement of sorts, Georges St. Pierre was rumored to be finally returning at last weekend’s (Dec. 10, 2016) UFC 206 from his home of Canada, but he announced in the weeks leading up to the event that negotiations with the promotion had stalled.

Apparently the UFC recently reopened negotiations with the former 170-pound king and St. Pierre’s team is still hoping to see “Rush” back in the Octagon. In fact, his longtime head coach Firas Zahabi recently spoke with ESPN on the topic, saying that he prefers a bout with middleweight champion Michael Bisping over a bout with welterweight titleholder Tyron Woodley:

“I would love the Bisping fight to be honest with you,” Zahabi said. “I feel the welterweight division doesn’t have a supremely confident champion yet. Tyron Woodley is a great champion, but he’s on his first defense. We need someone to build a history like Georges did, to have a super fight.

“With Bisping, it would be for the middleweight title. That would make it epic. Georges needs to come back for a mega fight, super fight. Something five rounds, something historical. Not just another contender.”

No matter who the opponent may be, however, Zahabi would be confident heading in, as he still feels as if St. Pierre is the best fighter on the planet:

“I still think Georges is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world,” Zahabi said. “He trains regularly so I still see him in action and the guy is a monster. I hope Georges and the UFC, his management team at CAA, they book him again. He’s such an incredible talent sitting by the wayside. It’s crazy to me.

“I think it’s a matter of time. I’m hopeful at least.”

Have you given up hope, or do you expect to see St. Pierre return at some point?

When former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre announced last week that he was a free agent after a near three year hiatus, it appeared as if his relationship with the promotion had never been worse. After all, UFC President Dana White has been saying for months that St. Pierre no longer had the desire to fight, a comment that “Rush” consistently declined.

Since GSP made that shocking announcement, the ex-champion has said that he has made ‘peace’ with White, although a return still hasn’t been set. The UFC boss, however, also took the time to comment on the meeting:

“My relationship has never been better with GSP. I’m glad we got together,” White said in a text message to Postmedia News.

St. Pierre, a man many consider to be amongst the greatest mixed martial artists of all-time, hasn’t competed since 2013 after scoring a highly-controversial decision victory over fellow former champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 167. Prior to that, he had won 11 straight bouts and defended his title a divisional record nine consecutive times.

Do you ever expect to see the Canadian star back in the Octagon?

Last week, former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre shocked the MMA world when he said that his lawyer had terminated his UFC contract, making him a free agent. This announcement all but confirmed that St. Pierre would not be making his long awaited return at Dec. 10’s UFC 206 from his home of Canada, a possibility that seemed very likely not too long ago.

A glimpse of hope once again emerged yesterday (Oct. 25, 2016), however, when middleweight champion Michael Bisping announced that he had verbally agreed to a bout with St. Pierre at UFC 206. “The Count” also urged “Rush” to ‘sign the papers’. Fight fans were excited for a moment, but UFC President Dana White quickly denied the report.

Today (Oct. 26, 2016), the nail was put in the coffin, as St. Pierre responded to Bisping with a video message. The ex-champion expressed his interest in the bout and said that he had made ‘peace’ with White after difficult negotiations, but also confirmed that he would not be fighting at UFC 206:

While it’s a shame that one of the sport’s biggest-ever stars won’t be making his comeback in the coming months, perhaps the fact that St. Pierre has made amends with White is a good sign.

Do you expect to ever see “Rush” back in the Octagon?

Michael Bisping: I’d Beat Georges St. Pierre

Reigning UFC middleweight champion Michael “The Count” Bisping recently defended his title for the very first time earlier this month at UFC 204 against Dan Henderson, but it was rumored that he could be making a quick turnaround against former longtime welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at December 10’s UFC 206 from Canada.

After three years away from the sport, St. Pierre made it clear that he was interested in making a return to the cage, but negotiations then took a downward turn as he recently said that he was a free agent, a claim that the UFC quickly disputed.

Given St. Pierre’s star power, especially in Canada, it’s likely that the promotion is still attempting to get him on the card, and Bisping is hoping for the same:

“Georges talked about fighting me a while ago and I’d love to fight the guy,” Bisping told Sport360.com. “It’d be terrific for me business-wise and I also think I’d beat the guy.”

“I’m here if you want to fight Georges, let’s go. Sign the papers, buddy, that’s all you’ve got to do.”

After his bout with Henderson, Bisping was given a 180 day medical suspension for the damage he took in that five round war, but the Brit says he has cleared his tests and is healthy and ready to compete:

“I had a CT scan after the fight and I’m all good,” he said. “There’s some misinformation going around, I don’t know where they’re all getting it, but they are incorrect. I’m good, I’m healthy. My leg is a little bruised, but a bit of ice and a few more days and I’ll be good to go.”

UFC 206 is currently set to be headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson.
