Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre announced earlier this week that he had terminated his contract after the promotion failed to offer him a fight by a specific deadline that his lawyer had set in place. It was rumored that St. Pierre, who hasn’t competed since 2013, was gearing up to make his return at December 10’s UFC 206, but that is now out of the question.

The ex-champion did, however, admit that the UFC sent him a letter expressing interest in a possible bout between him and fellow former titleholder Robbie Lawler, but because there was no date or venue included, he saw it as a breach in his contract. “Rush” also said that Lawler wasn’t healthy enough to accept the bout.

The “Ruthless” one, who’s coming off of a brutal knockout loss to Tyron Woodley last July, briefly agreed to a fight with Donald Cerrone at November 12’s UFC 205, but withdrew due to personal reasons, although those reasons don’t include his health:

“I think everyone just kind of assumes [health] is the issue, but that’s not the facts,” Lawler told ESPN. “It’s one of those things where I wanted to take a step back and realize what I wanted and why I wanted it. My whole life I’ve went out there and strived, and this time I needed to take a step back, relax and not rush it — make sure all the pieces were in the perfect place.”

“He (GSP) says he was offered a fight against me but I wasn’t healthy or whatever. He’s basically trying to read between the lines like other people, not knowing what’s the matter with me,” Lawler said. “Nothing is the matter with me. Do you accept the fight or not? That’s the real question, right? Because I’m ready to fight right now. Did you accept it or not? I’m guessing you didn’t. Don’t try to hide behind, ‘I’m not healthy.’ That’s not the facts.”

“[UFC president Dana White] said it the whole time, ‘GSP does not want to fight,’ and he most definitely does not want to fight me, period.”

“I’m always ready to fight that guy. I’ve been training my whole life to fight a guy like him — and him, in particular. So don’t use my name or try to hide behind something you think might be happening but is not. If he doesn’t want the fight, shut up.”

While a fight with St. Pierre doesn’t appear to be in the near future for Lawler, the former champ did say that he has been in contact with White regarding his next bout:

“I’m always ready to go,” Lawler said. “I’ve been talking to Dana, figuring some stuff out. I’m making sure he knows that I’m training.”

Who would you like to see Lawler next?

Eight Fights For Georges St. Pierre To Take Outside Of UFC

Despite the rumors that he could potentially be making his long awaited return at December 10’s UFC 206 from his home of Canada, legendary former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre announced on yesterday’s (October 17, 2016) edition of The MMA Hour that his lawyer had terminated his contract with the UFC and that he was

Despite the rumors that he could potentially be making his long awaited return at December 10’s UFC 206 from his home of Canada, legendary former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre announced on yesterday’s (October 17, 2016) edition of The MMA Hour that his lawyer had terminated his contract with the UFC and that he was now a free agent.

St. Pierre admitted that negotiations had stalled and that he had become tired of the drawn out process after once again finding his fire to compete. However, he didn’t say that he wasn’t going to once again fight, but he did say that he wasn’t sure what this free agency period would hold for him.

While it’s incredibly difficult to see “Rush” fighting outside of the world famous Octagon, that could indeed be a possibility once we are made aware of just how “free” St. Pierre is from his contract.

With that being said, we have compiled a list of seven fights that GSP could take if he indeed ends up leaving the world’s largest MMA promotion.

Ben Askren Calls Out Georges St. Pierre: I’ll Be Your Huckleberry

After former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre announced today (October 17, 2016) on The MMA Hour that he had terminated his contract with the promotion and that he was now a free agent, ONE 170-pound champion Ben Askren took to his official Twitter account to call out the Canadian star:

St. Pierre, who hasn’t competed since 2013, was rumored to be making his long awaited return at December 10’s UFC 206 from Toronto, but apparently negotiations have taken an unexpected turn.

Askren, on the other hand, has long been considered to be the very best welterweight competing outside of the UFC, but he does boast an impressive resume. A former Bellator champion as well as a former Olympian, “Funky” holds a near perfect 15-0-1 record. In fact, he feels as if he would match up quite well with “Rush”:

St. Pierre has long been an advocate for stricter drug testing and he’s made it clear that he’s in favor of the UFC’s fairly new deal with USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency), a third party testing organization. Not every promotion has a deal like this set in stone, but Askren even went as far to say that he’d be open to being tested by USADA in order to fight St. Pierre:

Do you see this fight ever taking place, and on a broader note, do you ever see GSP even competing outside of the UFC?

Georges St. Pierre Not “Necessarily” Needed To Headline UFC 206

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion and Canadian superstar Georges “Rush” St. Pierre has made it clear in recent months that he’s ready to return to fighting after nearly three years away from the cage. Former longtime UFC welterweight champion and Canadian superstar Georges “Rush” St. Pierre has made it clear in recent months that he’s ready to return to fighting after nearly three years away from the cage. He also said on a previous edition of UFC Tonight that fighting at December 10, 2016’s UFC 206 from Toronto, Canada would be ideal.

St. Pierre competing at this event is far from a done deal, however.

Tom Wright, General Manager of Operations in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, recently said that the promotion doesn’t ‘necessarily’ need a Canadian to headline the event. He also said that the a main event for November 12’s UFC 205 from New York must be secured before the focus shifts to UFC 206:

“We don’t need a Canadian necessarily to headline the event,” Wright told Submission Radio. “The last event that we had in Canada did not feature around a Canadian, so frankly it’s no different than here (in Australia). Our fans are sophisticated fans in Canada and they’re knowledgeable and sophisticated here in Australia. They want to see great fights, they want to see great competition and they’ll see it in Toronto.”

“It’s still a little bit early. We’re trying to figure out the main event for UFC 205, obviously that’s going to be a seminal event in Madison Square Garden in New York. So once that’s sort of cleared up, and that will happen in the next week or so, then we’ll start to bring more closely into focus what’s going to happen in Toronto.”

That doesn’t mean that the promotion wouldn’t like St. Pierre to headline the event as he’s obviously one of the promotion’s biggest-ever stars. Wright added that the two parties have been in talks, and that he would like to see GSP do ‘what he wants to do’:

“Well personally I’d love to see Georges come back, but I have been asked this question before and what I really want is for Georges to do what he wants to do. He made the decision to walk away from this sport back in 2013, and should he decide to come back, I’d be the first person to welcome him back with open arms. Should he decide to continue hanging them up, then I’ll salute that as well. It’s completely up to Georges. We’re trying to see if there’s a contract that can be pulled together and his team are talking with our team, and if it’s going to work out, it will work out.”

Do you still expect to see “Rush” make a return to fighting?

Woodley To Maia: Your A** A’int Getting My Back

No. 3-ranked Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia has quietly become a force to be reckoned with at 170-pounds as he’s won six straight bouts, most recently submitting former title challenger Carlos Condit in the first round of their UFC on FOX 21 main event. Maia’s resume should land him dangerously close to a title shot, but the welterweight division is currently in a state of limbo.

Newly minted titleholder Tyron Woodley, who won the belt with a brutal knockout victory over Robbie Lawler at July 30’s UFC 201, has expressed interest in bouts with big names like Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz, neither of which have been active in recent memory. No. 2-ranked Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is also well-deserving of a title shot.

No matter what lies ahead for the champion, however, Woodley doesn’t seem to be too concerned with Maia. “The Chosen One” recently said that when the two scrap Maia will not get a hold of his back (Via Bloody Elbow):

“Let me tell you something, Maia, you’re ass ain’t getting on my back when we get ready to scrap,” Woodley said. “You can write that shit all day, you ain’t getting back there, bro.”

Woodley fighting St. Pierre has appeared as a very realistic possibility given the fact that GSP has all but confirmed a return to action in recent memory. If that turns out to be the case, perhaps a bout between Maia and Thompson would make sense next.

Either way, Maia appears to be gunning for Woodley’s neck while “The Chosen One” seems confident that the strap will remain around his waist.

GSP: Dana White Doesn’t Know Anything About Me

A rumor surfaced yesterday that legendary former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre was supposedly returning to the Octagon to face featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the main event of November’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden, and it was supposedly going to be announced on tonight’s ‘UFC Tonight.’

While the announcement fans were waiting for never came and St-Pierre continued to tease the MMA world about his long-awaited and oft-discussed return, the decorated champion did seem closer than ever to a return after another rumor arrived last week that he would headline UFC 206 from his native Canada. St-Pierre admitted that it wasn’t a coincidence his four-month USADA testing window to re-enter fighting, which began on August 10, would expire on exactly that day:

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence. But it’s in Toronto. Who would be a better man than myself to headline a card in Toronto – Air Canada – get back the Canadian fans, raise the pay-per-view up now that Rory has gone to Bellator.”

Prodded by show co-host Daniel Cormier about just whom he would face in his return, St-Pierre turned the tables on ‘DC’:

“Whoever. I’m glad that you brought it up. Who would you like me to fight?”

But then he addressed the question in full, noting that previously discussed bouts with current welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and a big ticket rematch with Nick Diaz were on his mind. He also added the unexpected name of Demian Maia into the mix after he was impressed by the Brazilian’s dominant submission win over Carlos Condit last weekend:

“Tyron Woodley. I would fight Tyron Woodley. Nick Diaz, I would fight Nick Diaz. Maia looked pretty good in his last fight. I think he, these guys can elevate me. They’re not guys that I’m necessarily supposed to beat, so it’s a big risk, but I’m willing to take the risk because these guys gonna elevate me. To be far in this game, it’s not about who got the biggest balls, so to speak. Sort of, but it’s not about that; it’s not a straight line. You need to know where to go and be able to elevate yourself, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Talk moved on to UFC President Dana White’s suggestion that St-Pierre no longer had the desire to be champion, to which GSP vehemently denied. St-Pierre views this as a sort of negotiation tactic from White, and he said the brash executive would see he truly does want to fight in the first minute of his first fight back:

“He doesn’t know anything about me. I’m a smart guy. I’m not the kind of guy you’re gonna say, “Oh gee, I’m gonna sign it!” and gonna fight for peanut now. I’m a smart person; it doesn’t work on me. But I’m gonna tell him something today, ‘Let me fight once. And you’ll see in the first minute of the fight that is wrong.’”

TWoodGeorgesStPierre3

The all-time great confirmed he did want to be make another run at the title he vacated, and proclaimed he’d prove his desire to be champion against Woodley:

“Yes. Let me fight Tyron Woodley, then we’ll see if I wanna be world champion again.”

At the end of the day, however, he wasn’t mad at White, focusing on the fact that both sides of this potentially huge business deal have to look out for their own respective best interests. Once that game is done being played, St-Pierre noted, the world (and White) will see that he’s truly motivated to make his return:

“I understand what he means. I’m not angry at Dana; he does what he does for the best of his interests, I do what I do for the best of my interests. One day when all of that gonna be over, we’ll probably be friends like most of the guys that I fought. But now, it’s like a game, he’s doing his thing, I’m doing mine, and we’ll work for the best of our interests. But let me fight once, you’ll see. Not once, but after the first minute of the fight, you’ll be like, ‘Oh yeah, he’s serious.’”
