Over the past 12 months, established gyms like Blackhouse and Jackson’s MMA continued to produce championship-caliber talent in a variety of weight classes.

During the same time frame, a number of other training centers did their best to level the playing field.

Let’s take a look back at the top gyms from the year that was.

Tonight at UFC 142, Jose Aldo (21-1) proved himself once again as one of the most entertaining and dominant fighters in the world.

Aldo needed just one round to defeat Chad Mendes, knocking out the Team Alpha Male member with a knee and punches to retain his UFC featherweight title.

Aldo has now won 14 straight fights.

During this run Aldo has defeated some of the biggest names in the sport, including Urijah Faber and Kenny Florian.

The thing that has made Aldo so dominant has been his striking.

Out of 21 career wins, tonight’s knockout victory is Aldo’s 13th.

Even when Aldo does not get a KO victory, he usually makes his opponents pay for it.

Just take a look at Faber’s leg after or Mark Hominick’s face after they were punished by Aldo.

As much as Aldo’s striking is highlighted, his wrestling defensive has made him nearly unstoppable.

Aldo has some of the best wrestling defense in the game today and perhaps is only second to fellow UFC champion Jon Jones.

On top of his striking and wrestling defense, Aldo is also a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Aldo is one of the most well rounded fighters in MMA today. When it comes to his dominance, he’s right up there with Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre.

Aldo has just about cleaned out the featherweight division and could perhaps seek newer challenges with a move to lightweight in the future.

For now though, he reigns as king at featherweight.

As long as there’s nobody who can take him down and keep him down or get a clean hit on him early in the fight, he won’t be stopped anytime soon.

If you compete at the top of the sport, the pinnacle of where every fighter hopes to be is in the UFC.

However, even the elite of the MMA world, including Nick Diaz, have had their moments where opting not to show up for press conferences and escaping like a ninja from your trainer’s house have become common place.

The Stockton fighter is known for ruffling feathers thanks to his questionable decisions, making him one of many fighters who at point or another have become “slackers.”

So, Greg Jackson and UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre have parted ways, apparently.

At least, that what a lot of people are passing around the Internet to fill out this day in MMA news, via a post from The Underground.

ESPN’s Josh Gross, however, tweeted that he had spoken to Jackson, who had talked to St-Pierre an hour before, and that there were no ill feelings or confirmation of GSP’s departure from the camp.

Sure, fights were talked about today—a fight got confirmed for UFC 145, some people got confirmed for Bellator’s sixth season and there were probably a few good photos from UFC 142’s open workout somewhere. But, alas, a rumor about GSP leaving Jackson’s tutelage from The Underground’s forums took center stage.

While it’s unknown where the first reports originated, fans of the camp and the UFC champ will be relieved to know that there will be no departure from the French-Canadian welterweight sensation, who is widely regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in all of the Mixed Martial Arts world.

St-Pierre is seen by many as Jackson’s MMA fighter, though he generally trains with Firas Zahabi at the Tristar Gym in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Until only today, nobody would have sensed that there were any problems between the renowned coach and the welterweight kingpin.

Again, though, fans of both Jackson’s MMA and St-Pierre will be relieved to know that, despite our earlier reports, there are no problems (on the surface) between the camp and the champ.

Georges St-Pierre Rumors: UFC Champ Reportedly Leaving Greg Jackson Team

It’s become a symbiotic train of thought that when you think about UFC champion Georges St-Pierre, you associate the welterweight great with that of Greg Jackson and Co.

Such is not the case anymore as it appears that the Canadian has since severed ties with the Albuquerque crew and will now be doing all of his training exclusively with the Tristar gym in Montreal.

TheFlyingKneeMMA.com reaffirmed the rumor today which stems from a post on the Underground, which states that St-Pierre decided to end his affiliation with the Jackson camp based upon preconceived notions from the general public that the New Mexico team is solely responsible for the success that St-Pierre has cultivated as of late.

To pay homage to his head trainer in Firas Zahabi, who heads the Tristar academy, St-Pierre will now be devoting all his time to his original stomping grounds for the foreseeable future.

However, contractual obligations will still enable Greg Jackson to corner the UFC champ in subsequent bouts in the future.

If the rumors are true, this will prove beneficial for both parties involved, as St-Pierre was recently housed under the same roof as top contender Carlos Condit, who “Rush” could soon be facing upon his return.

St-Pierre is currently sidelined due to a knee injury suffered in the preparation leading into a title tilt against the aforementioned Condit. The two were originally set to headline UFC 137 last October before a torn ACL squelched those plans.

Since then, the 170-pound kingpin has gone under the knife, engaging in invasive surgery that will keep him on the mend for the better part of a year.

Now, Carlos Condit and Strikeforce transplant Nick Diaz will battle this February for the interim title, which will later be unified with St-Pierre’s welterweight belt.

Stay tuned for more as the story develops.
