Incumbent welterweight champion, Leon Edwards has been backed to turn in a victory against incoming foe, Colby Covington in the pair’s championship clash at UFC 296 by former title chaser, Gilbert Burns later this month – with the Brazilian claiming the undisputed gold holder could likely “outstrike” the challenger.

Edwards, the current undisputed welterweight titleholder, most recently headlined UFC 286 back in March in London, landing a close, majority decision win over three-time foe, Kamaru Usman in the pair’s championship trilogy bout on home soil.

As for Covington, the Clovis native has been sidelined since March of last year, turning in a dominant, unanimous decision win over former training partner and two-time title challenger, Jorge Masvidal in the pair’s heated grudge match at the welterweight limit.

“He’s (Leon Edwards) more dangerous than Kamaru (Usman), way more crispy,” Gilbert Burns told MMA Junkie. “The hands are quicker. The kicks are good. I think he’s going to be able to defend the takedowns and kind of outstrike him (Colby Covington) because of his precision and he’s got a lot of power.”

“He’s got a lot of pop on the kicks, and a lot of pop on the hands too,” Burns continued. “So, I do think Leon is going to win. It’s not going to be easy but, I think he’s going to get it done.”

Conor McGregor launches attack on the "fat lesbian" Gilbert Burns UFC comeback fight

Former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor has hit out at welterweight contender and fellow UFC staple, Gilbert Burns – referring to the Brazilian as “the fat lesbian” in a surprising onslaught on social media earlier today.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the UFC, has been sidelined from the Octagon since he fractured his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to former interim champion, Dustin Poirier back in 2021.

As for Burns, the one-time welterweight title challenger and former lightweight contender has yet to book his return to action, since dropping a unanimous decision loss to Belal Muhammad back in May – suffering a shoulder injury during the first round of the potential title eliminator in New Jersey.

Conor McGregor hits out at Gilbert Burns in surprise attack on social media

Expected to make his own return to the Octagon at the welterweight limit against Burns’ training partner, former lightweight title chaser, Michael Chandler in the early goings of next year, Conor McGregor hit out at the Niteroi grappler on his official social media today – in a first outburst aimed at Burns.

“Gilbert ‘the fat lesbian’ Durinho,” Conor McGregor posted on his official X account.

Officially returning to the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) earlier this week ahead of a planned Octagon comeback against the above-mentioned, Chandler next year, McGregor’s ongoing situation with the organization appears to have resulted in an “untenable” business deal with the UFC – leading to their disbanding at the beginning of 2024.

“The relationship between USADA and UFC became untenable given the statements made by UFC leaders and others questioning USADA’s principled stance that McGregor not be allowed to fight without being in the testing pool for at least six months. One UFC commentator echoed this, recently declaring that USADA should not oversee the UFC program since we held firm to the six-month rule involving McGregor, and since we do not allow fighters without an approved medical basis to use performance-enhancing drugs like experimental, unapproved peptides or testosterone for healing or injuries simply to get back in the Octagon.”

Gilbert Burns wants to see a double knockout between Khamzat Chimaev and Paulo Costa at UFC 294

Gilbert Burns doesn’t see Paulo Costa giving Khamzat Chimaev much more of a challenge than he himself did last year.

On October 21, Costa and Chimaev will make their respective returns to the Octagon after more than a year on the shelf. Emanating from Etihiad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UFC 294 will feature a stacked night of fights, but few are more intriguing than the middleweight matchup pitting an undefeated Chechen monster against the one-time title challenger.

Chimaev goes into the contest on the cusp of his first title opportunity, but if Costa manages to score what many would consider to be an upset, he could walk straight into his second crack at UFC gold.

Gilbert Burns doesn’t see that happening.

Stepping inside the Octagon with Chimaev at UFC 273, Burns gave ‘Borz’ the toughest test of his career thus far, but it still wasn’t enough as the Chechen came out on top via a unanimous decision. Speaking with Mike Owens in a MiddleEasy exclusive interview, ‘Durinho’ suggested that Costa doesn’t have the heart needed to survive the kind of onslaught that Chimaev brings to his opponents.

“He’s a big guy, but I don’t think he has the heart that I have,” Burns said. “I don’t think he has the jiu-jitsu that I have. He doesn’t have the get-ups that I have. He doesn’t have the submission threat that I have that makes Khamzat not want to grapple.

“He’s a very strong and big guy, but if I had to guess – and I don’t like both of these guys, a double knockout would be the best result – but it’s a 50-50 fight,” Burns added. “If Khamzat is able to take him down, it’ll be a hard night for Costa. If Costa is able to defend the takedown, it’ll be a hard night for Khamzat.”

While we wouldn’t put any money on a double knockout finish, it has happened before. During the Ultimate Fighter 5 finale in 2007, Gray Maynard and Robert Emerson were both unable to continue their contest following an attempted takedown from Maynard. Lifting up Emerson during a double leg, Maynard slammed his opponent back down to the canvas, instantly breaking Emerson’s ribs and causing him to tap out immediately. However, Maynard knocked himself out in the process by hitting his head on the canvas. The bout was ruled a no contest as both men were unable to continue.

So, never say never.

Gilbert Burns believes ‘Badass’ Ian Machado Garry will land UFC championship: ‘There’s new blood coming’

Gilbert Burns Ian Garry

Gilbert Burns is certain that Ian Garry has what it takes to be a UFC champion one day.

Standing at 13-0 and currently riding a six-fight win streak in the UFC, Garry has been a dominant young force in the welterweight division. He was most recently in action at UFC 292 where he faced Neil Magny and made easy work of the versatile veteran. Now, he’s looking to face Stephen Thompson, and a win against that caliber of opponent would see him very close to if not ready for a title shot.

Burns was recently on MMA Fighting’s Trocação Franca podcast and shared his thoughts about the prospects of the young Irishman Ian Garry.

“I think so — in a few years, yes,” Burns said when asked if he sees Garry holding the UFC welterweight title one day (H/T MMA Fighting). “He’s a great kid, 25 years old. This kid is a badass. Before the fight, he said he would do all that — he pretty much called the entire fight beforehand, and pulled it off.”

Gilbert Burns speaks about the dangerous young talent inside the welterweight division

“I think Shavkat (Rakhmonov) is really good, too,” Burns continued. “There’s also Jack Della Maddalena, a tough kid who’s coming up. There’s this Venezuelan kid, Michael Morales, an undefeated kid. Gabriel Bonfim too, a nasty kid. There’s new blood coming.”

“(Stephen Thompson) ‘Wonderboy’ needs to pay attention,” Gilbert Burns warned. “Older fighters need to pay attention. Neil Magny just lost badly. They need to reinvent themselves otherwise it won’t be good for them, brother.”

Currently rehabbing a shoulder injury that was sustained in his fight with Belal Muhammad, Burns is still confident that he’s got the fire to compete in what is quickly becoming the UFC’s most competitive division.

“…I’ve been knocked out, TKO’d, knocked down, but there were many fights where I wasn’t any (of those),” Gilbert Burns continued. I have good jiu-jitsu and I can use that too. I’m healthy, I’m fine, and I’m hungry to fight. I’ll only leave (MMA) if I lose three or four in a row and badly, getting knocked out. Then, I’m out. But I’m fighting. If I’m still doing it, I’ll keep doing it for years.

“I train with all of those guys. I just trained with Kamaru (Usman), and did some positions with Ian Garry. When Shavkat and all of these guys come here, I train with all of them. I can fight at the highest level. When I start getting smashed and no longer enjoying training, when I’m too tired for this, then it’s time. But I’m hungry to train now, man. I’m like a maniac now for not being able to train because of my shoulder.”

Gilbert Burns argues for fight with Dustin Poirier it makes sense next UFC

Former welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns has once more argued his case for a divisional showdown against former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier if the Lafayette native make a climb to 170lbs – claiming the pairing makes total sense next for both.

Burns, the current number five ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined since he suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to the surging, Belal Muhammad at UFC 288 back in May, suffering a shoulder injury in the process.

Sidelined through injury in the time since, the Brazilian has called for an Octagon return – particularly against fellow Florida-based trainee, Poirier, amid links for the Louisanan for a welterweight division leap.

Gilbert Burns likes idea of welterweight clash with Dustin Poirier next

Making his case for a pairing with the ex-interim champion, Burns claimed that proposed pairing with Poirier made all the sense in the world next.

“If you aske me which fight I wanted, it’s Dustin Poirier,” Gilbert Burns told MMA Fighting. “He’s moving up and that would be a super cool fight, but everyone’s calling him out, everybody wants him, so I won’t talk too much about it. But it’s a cool fight because of his name because he’s moving up. It makes sense for him to fight against a top-five [contender].

“There’s not point fighting someone ranked at 13 or 14,” Gilbert Burns explained. “It does nothing for me now. I’m already waiting [to recover] anyway, so I’ll wait for a good fight.”

Furthermore, earlier this week Burns’ Brazilian counterpart, former lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos suggested a showdown with former interim gold holder, Poirier at UFC 295 in November at Madison Square Garden.

Clamoring for his own comeback to active competition before the end of the year, American Top Team staple, Poirier has called for a return to action since suffering a spectacular second round high-kick KO loss to Justin Gaethje in the pair’s symbolic BMF title rematch at the end of July earlier this summer.
