Former UFC two-division champion Conor McGregor has shown solidarity with the Ireland women’s football team following the backlash they received after celebrating their victory over Scotland last Tuesday.

Following on from their victory the Ireland team was to be seen signing Wolfe Tones song ‘Celtic Symphony’ which contains the lyrics ‘Up The Ra’ referencing the IRA (Irish Republican Army).

The team received harsh criticism after the video emerged online of the players signing the song whilst celebrating their victory in the changing rooms post-match. Chloe Mustaki, a member of the match-winning squad would later appear on Sky Sports News to apologise on behalf of the squad for their actions.

Following the apology, Conor McGregor shared his thoughts on the matter in his own unique way. The Irishman uploaded a video to his social media editing Mustaki’s original response to include one of his many well-known catchphrases stating: ‘I would like to take his chance to apologise…to absolutely nobody.’

Conor McGregor Defends Ireland Team Following Backlash

Conor McGregor came to the defence of the Ireland Women’s team following the backlash they received following Tuesday’s victory over Scotland. The ‘Notorious’ himself has first-hand experience of social media controversy given his frequent tirade of posts targeting fellow martial artists and anyone who speaks poorly of him.

Most notably McGregor received heavy criticism in the aftermath of his defeat to Dustin Poirier in their trilogy bout at UFC 264 after making remarks regarding the Louisiana-natives wife, Jolie Poirier.

McGregor would only make things worse after his former opponent Khabib Nurmagomedov congratulated Poirier on his well-deserved victory.

Khabib would remark that ‘Good always defeats evil’ in reference to Poirier’s success over McGregor, which resulted in the Irishman making comments on the former lightweight champion’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Adulmanap Nurmagomedov died in July 2020 after battling health conditions and long-term effects brought on by the coronavirus. Responding to Khabib’s tweet McGregor suggested that ‘Covid is good and father is evil?’ making jokes in regards to Abdulmanap’s passing.

No doubt, Conor McGregor will continue to involve himself in controversies on Twitter, especially in the build-up to his highly anticipated return to the octagon, scheduled to occur in 2023.

Luke Rockhold

Following on from his retirement from MMA at UFC 278, former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold has welcomed the chance to compete in boxing should the right opportunity becomes available.

Rockhold was arguably thrown to the wolves when faced up against Brazilian powerhouse, Paulo Costa, at UFC 278. Two men who were at very different stages in their respective careers it seemed as though this matchup was scripted with only one outcome. Eleven of Costa’s thirteen victories at the time had come by way of knockout leading into this matchup. Luke Rockhold had suffered back-to-back defeats in such a manner and therefore lead to a majority of those invested in the matchup expecting him to suffer the same fate once again.

However, this was not to be. Costa would ultimately win the matchup via unanimous decision but not without having to overcome some adversity. Rockhold displayed signs of his former self, landing devastating punches and more of his infamous kicks as he took the Brazilian the full fifteen minutes.

Despite suffering defeat on what would be his final appearance competing in mixed martial arts his determination and heart displayed during the bout earned him the respect he deserved from those fortunate enough to watch.

Luke Rockhold reveals his desire to test himself in Boxing

Now having taken the time to recover and rest following on from this gruelling battle, Luke Rockhold has shared his interest in stepping into the Boxing ring should the right opportunity arise.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Rockhold touched upon his desire to try new things and suggested Boxing could provide him with the perfect chance to do so.

“I love physical stress, no doubt,” Rockhold stated.

“I will definitely look to chase adversity and discomfort. I’m not opposed to boxing; my legs need a f*cking break. So, if there’s some interesting people with the right people in the right promotion, I’d love to test myself. New ventures are always great.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)

Luke Rockhold would not be the first mixed martial artist to make the switch with the likes of Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren, and Anderson Silva having all previously competed in Boxing.

How do you think Luke Rockhold would do should he make the switch over to Boxing?

With The War 4, has Poland discovered the purest form of hand-to-hand combat in existence? After hundreds of years of boxing, and decades of mixed martial arts, Poland is looking to push for the next form of human martial art perfection.

The War features tag team showdowns, multiple-man matches, and bare-knuckle action. At The War 4, featured a three-on-three battle. The strategy seems to be to pound out your opponent as quickly as possible so you can gang up going two-on-one with your teammate. Here is a clip:

Although, this feels like a step backward as viewers were expecting possibly a bigger number after The War 3 featured a five-on-five battle.

Previously, this same promotion pushed the envelope by combining even more factors. They once promoted a 3-vs-3 women’s bare-knuckle war.

Poland, The War, and More

Poland continues to strive to push the limit of what martial arts could possibly be. In High League, they introduced a little person championship:

Not to be outdone, FAME asked the question of who would win in MMA, a little person or a man?

Poland’s MMA-VIP had organized an inter-gender fight between a woman and a man.

But the Russian promotion may have out-done them all with an intergender 2 men vs 1 women fight featuring an elderly man.

Rizin FF chief eager to book fight between Nate Diaz, Floyd Mayweather: ‘It’s a great idea’

Nate Diaz

Rizin FF leader and former PRIDE FC front man, Nobuyuki Sakakibara has suggested a future clash between former UFC welterweight contender, Nate Diaz, and former world champion professional boxer, Floyd Mayweather in the future – claiming Diaz could even likely defeat the Grand Rapids veteran.

Diaz, a one-time lightweight title challenger under the UFC banner, most recently headlined UFC 279 last month in a short-notice welterweight fight against former interim lightweight titleholder, Tony Ferguson.

Securing a fourth round guillotine choke win, Diaz was initially scheduled to fight the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev at the end, however, the latter missed weight by seven and a half pounds for the fight.

As for Mayweather, the Michigan native called time on his professional boxing career back in 2017 following a tenth round TKO win over common-foe, former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor in the Dubliner’s professional boxing debut.

In the time since, however, Mayweather has taken part in numerous exhibition boxing matches, including two under the banner of Rizin FF – most recently defeating Mikuru Asakura with a second round knockout back in September.

With Nate Diaz’s exclusivity period with the UFC in regards to contract negotiations set to come to an end in the coming weeks, the Stockton native has been linked with a slew of potential moves – including a transition to professional wrestling with the WWE.

Rizin FF declare their interest in a fight between Nate Diaz and Floyd Mayweather

An interested party appears to have risen in the form of Japanese promotion Rizin FF – with the previously mentioned, Sakakibara floating a fight between Diaz and Mayweather.

“We do think we’re at a point where we can’t just only focus on the Japanese market anymore,” Sakakibara said during an interview with MMA Mania. “We have to target the international audience. So, with that said, Floyd’s (Mayweather) doesn’t have to be a Japanese fighter anymore. It’s just one possibility thinking about the future. Not only Floyd’s opponent, but Nate Diaz as an individual has a great amount of character, fight style, and a great following internationally. So, as an individual, he would definitely be somebody we’d be interested to be talking to.”

“Nate’s kind of like the global (version of the) Asakura brothers,” Sakakibara explained. “The Diaz brothers are the global Asakura brothers. And who would not want to see them fight and take on Floyd Mayweather? Floyd’s been perfecting boxing his entire career and now he’s willing to do these exhibitions to fight different professionals like MMA fighters, YouTubers, and right now it’s the time where that is what sells and that is what people are entertained by. These big competitions – exhibitions – amongst different professions is something that really gathers attention and gets people talking.”

According to Sakakibara to boot, Diaz, who has always been linked with a move to boxing at the tailend of his professional mixed martial arts career, could potentially defeat Mayweather if they fought each other.

“Nate Diaz might even have a chance of beating Floyd, you know?” Sakakibara explained. “And for us to promote that ‘what if’ factor is definitely something that we need to promote for these exhibitions against Floyd. Making the people think maybe… that ‘if’ factor, Nate Diaz can bring all of that, so, we do think it’s a great idea.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir plots ideal MMA retirement: ‘How many times is that going to happen in history?’

Frank Mir

Former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir has one special request ahead of a potential retirement fight in MMA.

Now 43, Mir is looking for one final matchup to sign off on what has been a truly impressive career. Having faced the whose who of his generation Mir would like to call time on his career fighting alongside his daughter Bella Mir as part of a card in which she headlines.

Mir has spent his recent years in mixed martial arts helping coach his daughter who has amassed a professional record of 3-0 since starting her career. His last outing to the octagon saw him snap a four-fight losing streak when he was able to defeat fellow veteran of the sport, Roy Nelson, via unanimous decision.

Following on from his MMA career, the former Heavyweight champion tried his hand at boxing but unfortunately, things did not turn out as he planned. Mir would lose his debut to Steve Cunningham via unanimous decision before being brutally knocked out by multiple-time heavyweight champion, Kubrat Pulev.

Frank Mir plans dream MMA retirement scenario

Speaking in an interview with Brendan Schaub on Fight Night Flashbacks Frank Mir explained the ideal situation his wishes to occur when he bows out from the sport.

“I’m trying to heal up a lot of my injuries and stuff and take this seriously. Next year, I’m gonna go and fight again because I actually want to fight once on the same card with Bella as my last fight.” Mir told Brendan Schaub.

“She can headline the card — I can open it … How many times is that going to happen in history?” (Transcribed by MMAMania)

Mir would go on to state that he has no interest in taking up a co-main slot in this potential event as he wishes to be able to corner his daughter in her matchup.

In what would be a truly unique moment for the sport it only seems right that someone who has dedicated so much of his life to mixed martial arts should be able to bow out on his terms. Given his popularity among fans do not be surprised if a promotion does come in to grant him this wish.

Do you think Frank Mir will have the opportunity to share a card alongside his daughter?

Paddy Pimblett

Paddy Pimblett has revealed his interest in squeezing in one more fight before the end of the year, targeting UFC 282 in December.

Whilst making an appearance in the commentary booth at the recent Cage Warriors 144 event, Paddy Pimblett has stated his interest in taking part in the UFC’s final pay-per-view event of the year.

“UFC 282, I’m planning on fighting on that — Dec. 10,” Pimblett said. “So I’m just waiting for an opponent, lad. I’m waiting for someone to step up and sign on the dotted line. Everyone talks about ‘The Baddy,’ everyone talks about fighting me. But then the contract’s in front of them, you know, they’re not as confident.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)

Pimblett has taken to the UFC by storm earning victories in all three of his bouts whilst competing inside the promotion. The 27-year-old overcame adversity in his first matchup against Luigi Vendramini before unleashing a fury of strikes that would see him score a first-round finish in his debut matchup.

He would then follow up these performances with two more stoppage victories. First by submitting Rodrigo Vargas when the UFC initially returned to the United Kingdom back in March and then securing himself his third victory when the promotion later returned to London in July by submitting Jordan Leavitt in the second round.

Can Paddy Pimblett become the UFC lightweight champion?

As we prepare ourselves for arguably the strongest card of the year with UFC 280 just around the corner headlined by a lightweight title matchup between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira. Just how far could Paddy Pimblett go in the lightweight division?

There is no question that Pimblett has made a major impact since his arrival at the UFC. The former Cage Warriors featherweight champion has brought with him an enormous following which has only since grown since signing with the promotion.

Despite having not faced a ranked opponent during his UFC tenure many people believe that Pimblett does have what it takes to reach the top of the lightweight division. Pimblett has received high praise from both active and retired UFC competitors since his arrival with previous title challenger, Michael Chandler, claiming that the Liverpool-based fighter has real potential to reach the top. George St-Pierre also was full of praise for Pimblett following his impressive start inside the UFC and believes the sky is the limit for ‘The Baddy’.

With nearly all of the competitors within the lightweight rankings having recently competed or scheduled to compete it is unlikely he will face ranked competition at UFC 282. However, should he turn in another impressive display to close out the year 2023 could be the year we begin to see just how far Pimblett can climb through the lightweight division.

Who would you like to see Paddy Pimblett face at UFC 282?
