The Metamoris 5 main event between Kazushi Sakuraba and Renzo Gracie ended in a draw on Saturday night, after the 20-minute submission grappling match went the distance. The bout took place over 14 years after the two men first battled at PRIDE 10, where Sakuraba famously won by snapping Renzo’s arm with a kimura.

From the opening seconds of the match — when Sonnen took Galvao to the mat with a virtually undefended single-leg takedown — Sonnen’s strategy was to remain in top position and defend whatever Galvao was throwing at him from below. Outside of a cut that Sonnen sustained near his right eye, possibly due to an early clash of heads, the American Gangster did well to keep himself out of danger for the first ten minutes of the match.
Eventually, Galvao gets tired of playing around, and sweeps his way onto Sonnen’s back (see: 13:38-14:44 in the video above). From there, Galvao is relentless in his attack on Sonnen’s neck, looking to sink a rear-naked choke despite Sonnen’s game defenses. But it’s only a matter of time before Galvao advances to checkmate, and Sonnen taps at the video’s 17:28 mark, while a pleased Anderson Silva celebrates in the crowd. Watch until the end to hear Sonnen cut the obligatory pro-wrestling style promo before exiting the building.

Michelle Nicolini is a 32-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom who picked up her seventh World Jiu-Jitsu Championship title on Saturday in Long Beach, California. Nicolini faced Tammi Musumeci in the women’s featherweight black belt finals, and was behind on points with one minute remaining in the match. Then, she snagged Musumeci’s left arm and pulled it across her back in a gnarly omoplata-hammerlock-thingy that reportedly dislocated Musumeci’s shoulder and elbow, and should have ended the fight.

Officially, they fought to a draw — because Metamoris doesn’t use a point system, and every match that doesn’t end in a submission is counted as a draw. But it was a moral victory for Bravo, who controlled most of the action and put Royler in a number of uncomfortable positions.
Unless you’ve studied jiu-jitsu yourself, you might look at sequences like this and be totally baffled. So, a helpful Redditor named MisaCampo recorded a play-by-play commentary video for the entire Bravo vs. Gracie 2 match that explains what’s happening without getting too technical. If you’re a grappling noob who wants to know a little more about the intricacies of human-chess, this is a must-watch.
By the way, Royce Gracie reportedly threatened Bravo after the event as Eddie was throwing up, because that’s just the kind of guy Royce is.

And yet, a competitor at NAGA Vegas Grappling Championship actually scored a submission victory via horrible gas on Saturday. It must have been some truly repugnant stuff, too, because as you can see at the 0:07-0:10 mark, the loser taps out and then vomits all over the mat.
“He farted in my face,” the dude in the black rashguard tells the ref. “You farted in my face, man,” he tells his opponent. Then, he dutifully begins cleaning up his own barf with a paper towel.
We usually don’t like making sweeping statements like this so early in the year, but “Grappler Submits to Fart, Then Vomits” is a guaranteed Potato Award winner, maybe in multiple categories. You’ve just witnessed history, folks.

Since she was fired from UFC ring girl duty in 2009, Edith LaBelle has popped up here and there, in appearances as rare and glorious as Bigfoot sightings. Frankly, we miss the little knucklehead.
Luckily, the geniuses at MMA Candy — who previously brought us “this chick with the huge cans will teach you how to pass guard” and “why does that blonde girl have the gun from Predator?” — have gotten some quality time with the curvaceous French-Canadian. Watch as Edith and her lovely assistant take us through some kimura transitions that you can turn into finishing moves, as long as your partner isn’t putting up much of a fight.
