A ranked lightweight bout between Carlos Diego Ferreira and Gregor Gillespie is set to take place.

That’s according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto who reported Tuesday that it has been added to the UFC’s upcoming Fight Night event taking place May 8.

That card is notably headlined by a bantamweight contest featuring top-ranked contender Cory Sandhagen and former 135-pound champion TJ Dillashaw.

Both fighters are coming off losses. Ferreira saw his six-fight winning streak snapped after losing a split decision to Beneil Dariush back in February.

Gillespie, meanwhile, suffered his first defeat back in November 2019 when he was brutally head kicked by Kevin Lee. He was set to face Brad Riddell last month only for the fight to be pulled due to COVID-19 protocols.

A win for either competitor would see them back on track and potentially climb up the ranks as they look to enter title contention in the future. Ferreira is currently ranked No. 12 while Gillespie is No. 15.

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Vegas 22: Brunson vs. Holland results throughout the afternoon (Sat. 20th. March 2021) from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Taking main event honours at tonight’s Fight Night event from the UFC Apex facility, a middleweight matchup with potentially top-five implications for the victor as division mainstay, Derek Brunson draws the charismatic, surging striker, Kevin Holland over five sanctioned rounds.

Attempting to lodge his fourth consecutive victory, North Carolina native, Brunson knocked back the surging Dana White‘s Contender Series alum, Edmen Shahbazyan in a short notice main event last August — finishing the Glendale Fight Club striker with a third round knockout. The victory came as the #7 ranked contender’s third on the trot, following a pair of unanimous jugding triumphs over both Ian Heinisch and Elias Theodorou.

Sitting at #10 in the official 185-pound pile, Californian finisher, Holland set a record in 2020 for the most wins for a middleweight in a calendar year, with a staggering five straight wins.

Most recently featuring in a short-notice UFC 256 appearance against common-opposition, Ronaldo Souza in December, the Travis Lutter Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt managed a stunning, innovative knockout victory over the grappling sensation — from his back. The victory following prior wins over Charlie Ontiveros, Darren Stewart, Joaquin Buckley, and Anthony Hernandez.

Gregor Gillespie has claimed he was able to quickly get over his knockout loss to Kevin Lee.

Gillespie hasn’t fought since getting viciously KO’d by Lee at UFC 244 in November 2019.

The 34-year-old will return to the Octagon for the first time when he faces Brad Riddell at UFC Vegas 22.

At the UFC Vegas 22 pre-fight press conference, Gillespie explained why he had a fairly easy time recovering from his first career loss.

“It’s been behind me — a few weeks following that loss it was behind me,” Gillespie said of the knockout loss to Lee. “And I want to say this, too, the way I lost was easier to accept for me. And people may be like, what is he talking about? But that was easier for me to accept than getting beat up for three rounds, or getting taken down and held down. Or, you know, like if I had been drug through the mud and then lost a bad decision that would have hurt me way more.

“I got hit by a really nice punch followed by a really clean kick,” Gillespie continued. “And props to Kevin Lee on that, it was a beautiful combo. And I don’t know if you could do it better than that. It wasn’t lucky, it wasn’t ‘I got caught,’ it was perfectly executed and the credit is to him on that. It wasn’t like, ‘Man I had an off night.’ No, it was really solid on his end.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

Prior to his loss to Lee, Gillespie seemed like a potential lightweight contender. ‘The Gift’ had won six straight UFC fights since joining the organization in September 2016. These wins included stopping Yancy Medeiros and Vinc Pichel.
