UFC color commentator, Joe Rogan has certainly hyped up newly minted undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira – making the case that the Brazilian may have surpassed former two-weight UFC champion and Olympic gold medalist, Henry Cejudo in many’s eyes, as the best combat sports athlete ever. 

Pereira, who headlined UFC 281 earlier this month at Madison Square Garden against two-time GLORY Kickboxing rival, Israel Adesanya – clinched the undisputed middleweight crown with a stunning fifth round standing TKO victory.

Rallying after dropping three of the opening four rounds against Nigerian-Kiwi striker, Adesanya, Alex Pereira managed to stun the City Kickboxing mainstay at the fence in the final frame, dropping the champion with a left hook before scoring a standing technical knockout win to win the undisputed middleweight crown. 

Arriving in mixed martial arts back in 2015, Alex Pereira has so far established a 7-1 professional record, transitioning to the sport following a decorated kickboxing career, which saw him mint himself as the undisputed middleweight and light heavyweight champion under the GLORY Kickboxing banner.

Comparing the resumes of both Pereira, and former flyweight and bantamweight UFC champion, Cejudo during a recent podcast appearance with Sean O’Malley on The Joe Rogan Experience, long-time promotional color-commentator, Rogan questioned if Pereira now laid claim to the status of greatest combat sports athlete ever.

“Yeah, he (Henry Cejudo) won the gold medal in the Olympics,” Joe Rogan said. “However, (Alex) Pereira, when he was fighting in GLORY (Kickboxing) – he’s fighting elite professionals, you know where, Henry is wrestling amateurs.” 

Expected to make his first attempted defense of the middleweight title in an immediate title rematch with Adesanya last year, Pereira has scored other stunning knockout wins over Sean Strickland, and Andreas Michailidis during his Octagon tenure – sandwiched between a decision win against compatriot, Bruno Silva.

UFC bantamweight greats Aljamain Sterling and Henry Cejudo shared a staredown last night at PFL 10 2022. ‘Funkmaster’ Sterling is the current reigning champion of the UFC bantamweight division while Cejudo vacated his title in 2020. The two seem set to fight in 2023.

Is Aljamain Sterling vs Henry Cejudo booked?

Rumors have been kicking around for weeks that the Olympic wrestling gold medalist Henry Cejudo will be making his UFC return in 2023 in a title match showdown against Aljamain Sterling. According to MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz, the ink is dry on this one. In an interview with John Morgan, Abdelaziz claimed:

“And I can’t wait for my boy, ‘Triple C’ (Henry Cejudo) to come back. I like Aljo (Aljamain Sterling), I consider Aljo as a friend. Aljo is fighting Henry Cejudo – it’s done, you know, it’s done. It’s just – the UFC said it’s done, he knows it’s done.”

In addition to being the youngest American wrestler to ever medal in Olympic history, Cejudo also made history during his time in the UFC becoming one of the few to hold simultaneous world championship titles. Both of which he vacated to enjoy retirement. Cejudo was recently seen training alongside his former rival ‘Mighty Mouse’ Demetrious Johnson. Cejudo was helping ‘Mighty Mouse’ win the ONE Championship throne.

Aljamain Sterling is the current UFC bantamweight world champion with impressive wins over Petr Yan, T.J. Dillashaw, Cory Sandhagen, and others.

Abdelaziz continued:

“I understand he wants a different fight, but he (Henry Cejudo) never lost his belt, he’s a two-time champion – defended both his belts. And he left on his own. He didn’t leave cause he lost or was injured, he just needed time off. And guess what, I think he will defend this title – it’s a champion versus champion, ‘cause he never lost his belt. And I disagree with Aljamain, I think it’s a big fight. It’s a tougher fight, he knows that, and I know that. I don’t think Aljamain shied from an opponent, I think he tried to make Henry sweat. But I already know what’s up – he’s fighting Henry.”

Henry Cejudo finally found himself an opponent he doesn’t have to look up to.

‘Triple C’ is preparing for his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon in 2023, but the former two-division world champion already found himself a foe in web sensation Hasbulla. Known for throwing hands with some of the biggest fighters in the world, the pint-sized star mixed it up with the pint-sized Olympian in a received video clip posted on Cejudo’s Twitter account.

Hasbulla had a similar interaction with No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Alexander Volkanovski earlier this year. His showdowns with the UFC’s top stars along with his viral videos as ‘Mini Khabib’ made Hasbulla a viral sensation overnight. He is now an official UFC star having signed a five-year contract with the promotion in October.

Henry Cejudo Expected to Face Aljamain Sterling in UFC Return

Originally eyeing a fight with featherweight world champion Alexander Volkanovski, Henry Cejudo looks to be vying for the bantamweight crown in his return to the Octagon. In a video clip posted by John Morgan, Cejudo’s manager Ali Abdelaziz claimed that a fight between ‘Triple C’ and Aljamain Sterling is a “done deal.”

Henry Cejudo has been out of action for nearly three years, last competing at UFC 249. On that night, he successfully defended his bantamweight championship against former two-time champion Dominick Cruz. Promptly retiring after his victory, Cejudo has since made appearances for Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s Eagle FC promotion and on AEW Dynamite.

‘Triple C’ was recently spotted alongside former UFC champion Kamaru Usman and Justin Gaethje as the three were invited to Chechnya by warlord and human rights violator, Ramzan Kadyrov.

Justin Gaethje and former UFC champions Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo, all fighters managed by Ali Abdelaziz, were recently spotted in Chechnya at the invitation of the head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov. In a tweet by Karim Zidan, the three fighters were captured testing out weapons at a special forces facility in the Republic’s capital, Gudermes.

“Former UFC champs Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo, along with Justin Gaethje, are all currently in Chechnya at the invitation of the republic’s warlord Ramzan Kadyrov. Here they are testing out guns at a special forces facility in Gudermes.”

Undefeated welterweight Khamzat Chimaev has had a longstanding relationship with the Chechen warlord for some time, but this is the first that Justin Gaethje, Kamaru Usman, and Henry Cejudo have been associated with the man accused of multiple human rights abuses including anti-LGBTQ purges in the Republic and advocating to restrict the rights of women. If that weren’t enough, Kadyrov has also been accused of kidnapping, torture, and assassinations since he assumed office in 2007.

Fans Are Not Happy with UFC Fighters Associating With the Chechen Warlord

The relationship between the United States and Russia has always been strained. That was further exacerbated by Russia’s needless invasion of Ukraine which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of soldiers and civilians on top of leaving 7.6 million Ukrainians and Russians displaced.

Many MMA fans on Twitter responded negatively to the revelation that three of the UFC’s most successful fighters have chosen to associate with such a contentious figure, particularly in the midst of a war that a majority of the world is very much against. Twitter user @ridingbycycles said:

“That’s just absolutely vile. I can tolerate Chimaev’s relationship with Kadyrov because he appears to be in a hole he can’t get out of. But for American athletes to embrace this is a disgrace.”

Another Twitter user, @GMCManning, says that he is done rooting for the trio of fighters after their association with Kadyrov.

“Well…guess I’ll be rooting for all their opponents from now on.”
