Ian McCall had a rough go in just his second fight under the Rizin banner.

The promotion held its tenth event yesterday on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the Marine Messe Fukuoka in Fukuoka, Japan. This also marked their first event of 2018. The show was headlined by McCall vs. Kyoji Horiguchi in a bantamweight bout.

As seen in the fight, Horiguchi ended the fight in quick fashion as he connected with a wicked punch in just nine seconds to knock out McCall. It only took one shot for this fight to be called off by the referee.

If you recall, McCall was granted his release from the UFC in October of 2017 to pursue other opportunities.

Once he was available, Rizin decided to sign him to be in their tournament. It should be noted that McCall suffered a first round TKO loss to Manel Kape in his first fight under the RIZIN banner in December of 2015.

His previous fight saw him suffer a loss to John Lineker in January 2015 in the UFC.

On the flip side, Horiguchi decided to test out the free agent market and left the UFC in 2017. Now, he’s extended his winning streak to nine, which includes his last three bouts with the UFC as well as his time in the RIZIN Bantamweight Grand Prix, which he won.

What’s impressive about Horiguchi is the fact that his only loss in the last six years was a defeat to top pound-for-pound king Demetrious Johnson in 2015 under the UFC banner.

Here are the results from the event:

Kyoji Horiguchi def. Ian McCall via KO (punch), R1

Tenshin Nasukawa def. Yusaku Nakamura via TKO, R2 (kickboxing)

Kanna Asakura def. Melissa Sophia Karagianis via unanimous decision

Yusuke Yachi def. Diego Nunes via split decision

Daron Cruickshank def. Koshi Matsumoto via KO (head kick), R1

Issei Ishii def. Daishin Sakai via unanimous decision (kickboxing)

Kai Asakura def. Manel Kape via split decision

Ayaka Hamasaki def. Alyssa Garcia via unanimous decision

Ante Delija def. Ricardo Prasel via unanimous decision

Jairzinho Rozenstruik def. Andrey Kovalev via split decision

Kanako Murata def. Lanchana Green via submission (anaconda choke), R1

Tomohiro Kitai and Darvish Kurogi fight to split draw (kickboxing)

MMA’s Unluckiest Fighter Ian McCall Finds Strange Way to Lose at Rizin FF

Former UFC flyweight and current Rizin FF bantamweight Ian McCall is one unlucky guy when it comes to MMA. Despite long being a member of the 125-pound elite, strange happenings always kept McCall from ever gaining momentum during his time in the UFC.

An officiating error prevented him from a potential shot at a UFC title. Then came the injuries. And a blood infection. It wasn’t just McCall’s troubles that kept him from competing, either, as he had three consecutive fights canceled due to injuries and/or illnesses suffered by his opponents.

A breakup with the UFC and transition to Japan’s Rizin FF promotion was supposed to offer him a fresh start. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

Debuting opposite Manel Kape in Rizin‘s Bantamweight Grand Prix, McCall was handed an early exit from the tournament due to a TKO via cut. A cut he suffered as his face was dragged along the ring ropes during a takedown attempt. Check out the video here:

The strange sequence sliced McCall’s face wide open and instantly painted both men red. The referee broke things up not long after and, after seeing the severity of the cut, declared Kape the winner by TKO at 1:48 of Round 1.

McCall was ultimately fine after the bout apart from the cut and took to Twitter to discuss the latest unfortunate turn in his career.

“Well I’m officially the unluckiest person the sport of MMA ever,” he said (warning: NSFW language). “Cut from f–king a ring rope. Not the loud mouth c–t I was about to smash.”

The Bantamweight Grand Prix will continue on without McCall, with Kape facing former UFC title contender Kyoji Horiguchi in the semifinals on New Year’s Eve.

The good news for McCall is that, in all likelihood, the cut won’t put him on the shelf for too long. Look for him to climb back into the ring in early 2018, possibly for a rematch with Kape.

Things got a little bit scrappy between two fighters at the weigh-ins for the upcoming Rizin FF event.

Ian McCall and Manel Kape didn’t want to wait to get into the ring before exchanging blows. The two fighters, who are set to compete in the Rizin Bantamweight Grand Prix, were involved in a physical altercation at the weigh-ins.

Video of the incident has emerged and it was clearly seen that Kape slapped McCall in the back of the head following their staredown and McCall retaliated with a slap.

Kape threw a punch back, but McCall dodged it. Officials then had to separate the fighters. Check out the incident here:

McCall wrote on Twitter afterward that it was a slap, not a punch, and that his opponent would have been far more damaged had it been a closed-hand strike:

“It was a slap. If my hand was closed he would have dropped.”

McCall and Kape will meet in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday, which marks the first day of the promotions’ two-day event at Saitama Super Arena in Japan.

If you recall, McCall was granted his release from the UFC in October to pursue other opportunities. Once he was available, Rizin decided to sign him to be in their tournament. It should be noted that he has not fought since a loss to John Lineker in January 2015.

On the flip side, Kape advanced in the Rizin tournament by beating Erson Yamamoto by first-round knockout in October. He has won all but one of his career fights via finish.

The winner will advance to the semifinals of the Grand Prix, which takes place on the second day of the Rizin event Sunday.
