The UFC’s anti-doping partnership with USADA drug testing has caught many fighters using banned substances in its three-year existence.

It’s also caused a massive amount of controversy and question marks due to some perceived inconsistencies. A large part of the uncertainty stemmed from the fact USADA announced when a fighter was flagged for a ‘potential’ violation long before the case was actually. That resulted in many a fighter’s name being dragged through the mud only to see them sort out the case.

Oftentimes, fighters with previous potential violations would receive a small suspension or no punishment. The damage was done to a fighter’s reputation, however. Many would be branded cheats even if they were ultimately exonerated of any true PED usage. The court of public opinion is quick to convict in today’s fast-paced, social media-driven world.

Major changes will be coming to the UFC’s program with USADA as a result. UFC Chief Legal Officer Hunter Campbell confirmed to ESPN that the UFC will now only announce a fighter failing a drug test when the case is resolved:

“If an athlete has a positive drug test, we aren’t putting them in a fight until their case is resolved — but what we can do is give the athlete an opportunity to adjudicate their issue without the public rushing to judgment. Announcing the test result creates this narrative around the athlete before people understand the facts.”

A Tenuous Grey Area

The UFC will reportedly follow the path of how Olympic athletes’ USADA cases are announced. Obviously, a significant determining factor was the number of cases that resulted in the fighter being exonerated in some way. Putting that in perspective, UFC Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky said that 62 athlete cases have been adjudicated by USADA since the inception of its partnership with the UFC in 2015.

An astounding 21 of those cases were determined to be of unintentional use, mostly involving the all-too-familiar tainted supplement. This has affected many top-level fighters. Legendary former middleweight champion Anderson Silva was recently cleared of a second failure due to a tainted supplement. He was branded a cheat and his legacy tarnished first.

Infamous False Failures

UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg was also flagged for a potential violation last year. Cyborg did infamously fail for stanozolol during her Strikeforce days, and the public rushed to condemn her. She was cleared due to a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) shortly thereafter. Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos was also flagged and ultimately proved his innocence due to a tainted supplement. But he lost a year of his fighting career before he was.

Josh Barnett was also flagged and provisionally suspended. He spent well over a year in painstaking litigation only to have his lawyers prove he was flagged for unintentional use. The process was so hard to deal with he asked for and received his release from the UFC. Barnett does have a lengthy history with real PED usage, but he was found to be innocent in this case.

Regardless of a fighter’s background or if they were flagged for a banned substance or tainted supplement, the case should definitely be resolved before it becomes public knowledge.

Campbell said the UFC is looking to avoid that outright period of initial doubt and condemnation:

“Part of the feedback Jeff and I have received from the athletes is, ‘I would have appreciated the opportunity to adjudicate this, so the story could be I tested positive, a full investigation was conducted and it was found the use was unintentional,’” Campbell said. “That story is very different than giving somebody a six-month window, where they are trying to defend themselves against accusations they are a cheater.”

Step In The Right Direction

It’s a great idea and one many in MMA have called for quite some time. Another issue being put under scrutiny is the severity with which it punishes those flagged for tainted supplements.

Novitzky said that there will still be punishments for unknowingly ingesting banned PEDs and other substances. But those instances won’t be given the same major punishment as obvious and intentional cheaters:

“This program is meant to punish and catch intentional cheaters,” Novitzky said. “None of us are saying there will be no liability when it comes to unintentional use, but to punish that level of liability in the same manner of someone who was knowingly using something is not what this program was meant to do.”

Will the above changes lead to USADA’s anti-doping efforts with the UFC being lent more credibility?

There’s been a heated debate raging in MMA since Conor McGregor’s presser antics last week.

It was a strange scene that saw McGregor unload his usual ultra-personal attacks while promoting his new whiskey. It was also devoid of the usual crowd of boisterous fans supporting him. McGregor ultimately got the job done and generated hype for their upcoming megafight in the main event of next week’s UFC 229.

The event has been billed – rightfully so – as the biggest UFC pay-per-view of all-time based on the stakes involved in McGregor’s long-awaited return. The two fighters bring a bad blood-fueled rivalry from earlier this year. McGregor was infamously arrested for throwing a metal dolly through a bus containing Khabib before April’s UFC 223. He was jailed on assault charges and reached a plea deal this summer.

But there hasn’t been much in terms of media promotion for the fight. McGregor has chosen to stay close to his training camp. It’s probably a good idea considering he has lost two of his last four overall fights. Regardless, he got the ball rolling by dominating the presser talk with the always-quiet Khabib. It’s lead many of his fans to claim McGregor ‘won’ the first presser.

One man predictably disagrees.

Khabib’s Coach Sounds Off

Not surprisingly, Nurmagomedov’s AKA coach Javier Mendez does not think McGregor ‘won’ the presser. Mendez recently told MMA Fighting that they knew McGregor’s game all along. It was plain to see he was going to make things personal by evoking Khabib’s family and gym, among other topics. So McGregor won the trash talk, but Mendez claims Nurmagomedov won everything else:

“We talked to Khabib right before the fight was made. We said, ‘Look, he’s going to play with you, he’s going to hit every button; religion, politics, family.’

“That’s his game, he’s a master at it. Khabib wasn’t rattled at all. Slightly agitated? Yes, but it didn’t work. It did not work. Who won the staredown? Who won the talking? Conor did the talking, so he won that.

“But overall, everything, Khabib won.”

There’s the school of thought that McGregor clearly won and is now in Khabib’s head. The other side insists he was trying way too hard and overcompensating for a lack of confidence. Fans of each fighter will of course side with their man.

UFC 229 will play host to the biggest lightweight title fight in UFC history – that much is certain. Khabib has never let trash talk affect his performance in the cage. Nurmagomedov may be the most focused and dominant fighter in MMA today.

He’s never been in a situation like he is now, either. Did Khabib keep his cool as much as Mendes says?

Or will McGregor’s psychological warfare finally crack the rough exterior of ‘The Eagle?’

Paige VanZant Hopes January’s ESPN Debut Sparks Fresh Start

UFC Flyweight Paige VanZant hopes January’s ESPN debut will be a fresh start.

“12 Gauge” Paige has had her ups and downs since entering the UFC. At UFC on FOX 21 back in 2016, VanZant looked like a world-beater as she finished off Bec Rawlings with a jumping switch kick followed by hammerfists on the canvas.

VanZant hasn’t had her hand raised in victory since that night in 2016. She went on to lose consecutive fights to Michelle Waterson and Jessica-Rose Clark. Although she was having some growing pains in the Octagon she was thriving as a businesswoman outside of it.

VanZant Outside The Octagon

She finished as the runner-up in Dancing with the Stars and later would win the celebrity edition of Chopped. She also became a published author writing an autobiography about her personal struggles growing up in Oregon and her journey to the UFC.

Now training with Team Alpha Male, VanZant will be apart of a historic fight card. She will compete on the ESPN card when the promotion makes its debut on the sports network this January. “12 Gauge” hasn’t confirmed reports that her opponent will be Hawian fighter Rachael Ostovich.

“The UFC came to me and asked when I would be able to fight again,” VanZant told MMA Fighting via e-mail. “I was fortunate enough that it coincided with the first-ever ESPN card. I can’t wait to be apart of such a ground-breaking moment in the UFC. It’s a true honor.”

VanZant has been sidelined the last year. Her first surgery failed to correct the issue with her broken arm and she was forced to have yet another operation in July.

“It was super devastating being told that I had to go in for surgery a second time,” said VanZant. “I felt very defeated because I had to go through the healing process all over again. It was like the first six months was a total waste. I have been very careful after this surgery making sure I’m doing everything perfectly with recovery and getting back into the cage at 100 percent.”

VanZant has been given the go-ahead to accept the fight in January and fully expects to be 100% come fight night.

New Year

Somethings will be different for VanZant come the new year. Most notably she will be married to fellow fighter Austin Vanderford. Most likely VanZant will document the entire event on her social media channels. “12 Gauge” has become something of social media savant. She even chronicled her surgeries on her YouTube channel.

“I can’t wait to be on the next reality TV show that comes my way and I plan on putting out more books in the future,” VanZant said of the opportunities that have come her way both because of and outside of fighting. “On top of that I truly believe if I never found fighting I would have never found my future husband. Which I am so blessed to have him in my life he is so wonderful. It makes things so special that we share a career together. We support each other’s endeavors and try to be positive influences in each others lives.”

With a new year comes new goals but for VanZant the goal has been the same since she started fighting.

“When I began fighting I did it strictly for fun,” said VanZant. “I had no idea that fighting could take me this far or it would consume my life the way that it has.”

Yesterday, the mixed martial arts (MMA) world was subject to one of its biggest-ever spectacles with New York City’s UFC 229 presser featuring Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.

The first media event for October 6’s megafight between the current and former lightweight champions was an odd one to be certain. McGregor came out guns blazing just like he did throughout his promotional World Tour opposite Floyd Mayweather last year. The Irish star unveiled his motivation for coming back to battle ‘The Eagle’ before blaming his infamous UFC 223 bus attack on the Russian champ.

McGregor was also seen guzzling his brand-new Irish Whiskey Proper Twelve. So much so, in fact, that several onlookers among the wide reactions on social media thought he was overcompensating for perceived fear. The normally stoic Nurmagomedov had his own views of McGregor’s alcohol use, predictably choosing to stay focused on the fight. Buoyed at least in part by his own brand of the hard stuff, McGregor went off on a litany of personal topics from making death threats to ripping Khabib’s father.

Overall, it was a press event that was called the “darkest he’d ever been to” by UFC President Dana White. That’s saying a lot.

What’s In The Staredown?

So after the somber, strange UFC 229 presser, who is actually in whose head?

Fans seem to be torn down the middle on social media. They have their separate claims and justifications why McGregor or Khabib now holds the distinct mental advantage. Khabib and McGregor came face-to-face in the traditional UFC 229 presser staredown. Again Khabib was statuesque while McGregor as animated as always. Again people had polar opposite views on what that meant.

We knew McGregor would be looking to return with a bang. However, it may have seemed like he was trying too hard like he was during the final legs of his World Tour with Mayweather.

True, his whiskey will be one of the official sponsors of UFC 229. It’s a fine line to walk between focusing on promoting your new booze and fighting the man who many feel is the most dominant force in MMA right now. There’s the school of thought that McGregor is focused after staying out of the media until now.

We also knew Khabib would be as stoic as a rock. Trash talk has never been his forte or focus. He simply stared right through McGregor during the staredown. He’s done that with all of his previous opponents. Each opponent went down in a similar fashion, regardless of his perceived deficiencies in the cage. “The Eagle” appeared a bit miffed at McGregor’s comments at times; it’s true.

That could just serve to galvanize his resolve, however. That, of course, is the last thing McGregor needs. Overall, it just looked like McGregor was trying too hard as he was during the Brooklyn leg of his Mayweather tour.

If that comes back to bite him when they finally throw down, we’ll have to wait and see. Who – if anyone – is in whose head after the UFC 229 presser?

It’s time Conor McGregor reveals the real reason he came back to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at October 6’s UFC 229 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

As expected, McGregor wasted little time getting the trash talk building with Khabib at today’s UFC 229 Press Conference from New York City. He dove right into why he was returning to shut up his rival champion Nurmagomedov after their highly-publicized beef in New York earlier this year.

McGregor claimed that Khabib cowered when faced with even numbers. He’s back for the love of war, and can’t wait to put a bad beating on ‘The Eagle’:

“I came back for the love of this. To come and shut this man up. A little rat, a little weasel, a little hard man in groups. I’ve met many of them through my years. A man who grows in numbers. But on his own and when confronted in a similar situation, cowers away.

And that’s what you saw with that little shite on the bus over there. He s*** his jocks after doing something to his own countrymen that nothing got to do with any of this. And that’s it. I came back for the love of fighting and the love of war and I am going to truly, truly love putting a bad, bad beating on this little glass-jaw rat!”

Friendship Gone Wrong

The media asked him about how his rivalry with Khabib began after the two were cordial in years past. To that, McGregor said Khabib was simply a fanboy who “bought his t-shirts.” The Dagestani then got cocky when an investor began pouring money into his gym according to the Irish former champ:

“Fanboy! The man was a fanboy. He bought t-shirts of mine. He f***** supported the cause. You remember that? You little fanboy, you little fanboy b****. He bought t-shirts to support the cause, nothing but respect. And then, and then, over in his neck of the woods, a man involved ins something, who is now in prison, Vladimir Putin locked him up for embezzling $150 million worth of money from the Russian people, started to invest and pump money into his gym.

“So he started to grow in power, started to grow in power, started to gain this false power, started thinking he was a little hard man, tough guy. Then the s*** hit the fan with ya, man. He gets locked up and now there’s not a bean left. And now I’m here to put the nail in the coffin. That’s how it began. He was a fanboy. Thought he was a little hard man with some money like many people do. Money and numbers.”

McGregor held fast to his claim that Khabib wasn’t so tough on his own. He acknowledged that his team still supported him, but claimed the wildly popular current champion had actually been abandoned by his own people:

“Now the money’s gone, the numbers are still there, but trust me, his own countrymen, his own people, they wanna see him gone do. And I am gonna do it in the name of the Russian people.”
