Junior dos Santos

In the first heavyweight blockbuster of the night, we have former UFC champion Junior Dos Santos taking on Jairzinho Rozenstruik. Dos Santos is looking to bounce back after suffering two straight losses against Curtis Blaydes and Francis Ngannou. Rozenstruik is also trying to get back in the win column tonight after suffering the first loss of his professional MMA career. The 32-year-old was viciously knocked out by Ngannou when the pair met at UFC 249 back in May. Who will get the victory tonight? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…

Jordan Ellis: I think this is a really evenly matched fight that could go either way. After lots and back-and-forth, I’m going to go with Junior Dos Santos in this one. I think despite the fact he is past his prime he has proven himself capable of mixing it with the best – beating the likes of Derrick Lewis just last year. Jairzinho Rozenstruik’s biggest win came against Alistair Overeem but it was a fight he was dominated in for almost 25 minutes. Now he comes off one of the most brutal KOs in UFC history. I just think he has been pushed too quickly and will again fall short against an elite level heavyweight in Dos Santos.

Prediction: Junior Dos Santos

Abhinav Kini: Nobody knows how Jairzinho Rozenstruik will perform coming off a brutal first career defeat. That said, I think he has what it to takes to defeat Junior dos Santos who while still a top contender, is prone to errors which can be fatal against heavy hitters like Rozenstruik.

Prediction: Jairzinho Rozenstruik

Ryan Maccarthy: Both of these heavyweight contenders are coming off losses. Its hard to tell where they are at mentally, do we know how Rozenstruik will rebound from his first career loss? No we dont. We do know Junior Dos Santos is a veteran that doesnt make many mistakes. Im leaning towards the powerful and dangerous Rozenstruik, but dont be surprised if JDS pulls off the win here.

Prediction: Jairzinho Rozenstruik

Harry O’Connor: I feel sorry for Jarzinho Rozenstruik after his last fight, 20 seconds against Ngannou could make everyone forget how dangerous he actually is. I expect him to come out with full intent to re-ignite himself as a danger in the heavyweight division, for that reason I think he will knock a fading Junior Dos Santos out in the first round.

Prediction: Jairzinho Rozenstruik

Heavyweight contender Jairzinho Rozenstruik is hoping to rematch Francis Ngannou at some point and says he’d fight the Cameroonian knockout artist tomorrow if he was given the chance.

Rozenstruik and Ngannou squared off in an eagerly anticipated fight at UFC 249 on May 9. ‘The Predator’ finished the bout in scarily quick fashion, scoring a huge knockout win with just 20 seconds on the clock. Just 10 fights into his career it appeared Rozenstruik had stepped up in levels too quickly. Despite that, the decorated kickboxer holds no regrets about taking the fight and expressed his willingness to face Ngannou again given the chance.

“Regret, no,” Rozenstruik told MMA Junkie. “It was a big chance. We knew that it was a big fight, a big challenge. And it didn’t go my way, but my dream is still alive. I hope he becomes champion. If you ask me to fight him tomorrow, I’d fight him again. I train to fight him again. Respect, it’s all business. I wish him luck, and hopefully I see him around.”

“For me it was more, we didn’t really get into it (the fight). It happens in fights. And, yeah, a defeat, a loss is always not good. It’s not nice, and yeah it sucks. Now I’m back in the gym training hard, and let’s try again. Let’s get back in the octagon, which is what I’m looking forward to the most.”

Rozenstruik will be looking to bounce back from his first career loss at UFC 252 on August 15. He’ll take on former heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos who also trains at American Top Team but that won’t be an issue according to Rozenstruik who explained.

“I just got the opportunity, and I said yes. No disrespect to Junior, he’s a nice guy. We train at the same gym, and every time I see him he’s always nice. He’s always a good guy, but at the end of the day, it’s going to be business that we have to settle. So I mean, if I get the opportunity, I take it.”

Alistair Overeem wants a rematch with Jairzinho Rozenstruik to make things right.

Overeem is coming off an impressive come-from-behind victory over Walt Harris at UFC Florida this past weekend to make it three wins in his last four.

It might as well have been a four-fight win streak if not for the controversy in Overeem’s previous fight with Rozenstruik back in December.

Overeem: I Schooled Rozenstruik

“The Demolition Man” dominated Rozenstruik for majority of the fight but was knocked down in the last few seconds by a right hand. Although Overeem wasn’t knocked out — as he got back up to his feet right away — the referee called an end to the fight with Rozenstruik being awarded the TKO victory.

The former title challenger doesn’t seem too affected by the result. After all, he is still taking it as a victory given his performance.

But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t like to run things back. If that is the case, he plans on finishing things this time as he did with Harris.

“I’m not dissatisfied about the Rozenstruik performance. … We schooled the guy,” Overeem told Sirius XM’s Fight Nation (via MMAJunkie). “We were up all five rounds, it was just like one, or actually it was two punches that he connected. In my opinion a wrong stoppage, the ref should have never jumped in and when he jumped in it was zero seconds left. I actually had thought that it was the end of the fight because I remember the click, click, last 10 seconds and then I got dropped, straight back to my feet and it was over.

“I thought I actually won that fight and then it was like hey (expletive), they stopped it, TKO? And then you have Rozenstruik talking about it. He KO’d me, he KO’d me. That guy got lucky and I would love to run it back with him because (if) I fight him again, I’m gonna finish him. One hundred percent.”

It’s certainly a fight that makes sense at this point given that Rozenstruik was recently knocked out by Francis Ngannou at UFC 249 earlier this month.
