Tires: Check, Sledgehammer: Check; Holy Shit, James Toney Really is Taking this MMA Thing Seriously

I was beginning to think that all of the back-patting he was getting from his entourage and training partners was starting to make James Toney a bit delusional in thinking he was an actual MMA fighter, but after seeing this video, I have to admit I was wrong. Toney isn’t just a bit delusional. He’s completely delusional if he really believes that he has more than a puncher’s chance against former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture at UFC 118.

All of the half-hearted sledgehammer smacks and tire flips in the world won’t make up for the fact that he has only been training MMA for six months (though he claims he’s been training for nine) and Couture has been competing in the sport for thirteen years.

Regardless of how much Toney may be fooling himself, I enjoy trying to dissect his unintelligible ramblings and convert them into text — a task which I rank slightly higher on the difficulty scale than solving a sudoku puzzle. I’ve done so many of these transcriptions that I can listen to Toney talk and understand exactly what he is saying. I’m actually considering sending the UFC my resume in the hopes that I can be Lights Out’s Ed Soares and I can translate for him in his pre and post-fight interviews.

Ed Soares, the manager of a large contingent of the UFC’s Brazilian roster including Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva, Junior Dos Santos and the Nogueira brothers, was on MMA Scraps radio last week and was asked about Vitor Belfort calling him a clown for mistranslating his fighters interviews.

Although he didn’t address the actual issue of him allegedly misrepresenting what his clients say on the mic in this clip, (he admits doing it in another portion of the interviewSoares did say that he has spoken to Belfort and has since "squashed" any beef they had.

Just two weeks away from his UFC debut, James Toney continues to send mixed signals about his mixed martial arts training and respect for the sport as he prepares to fight MMA legend Randy Couture.

Toney, who took part in a Thursday conference call to hype the UFC 118 co-main event, used some of his Q&A time to discount Couture’s chances and skills, dismiss various parts of the MMA game and simply recite his boxing resume to explain why he’d win.

The multi-time, multi-divisional boxing champion offered little in the way of specifics in regards to the work he’s been putting in for his first foray into his new sport, instead offering on multiple occasions that he was “born to win” and that “James don’t lose.”

Randy CoutureAnderson Silva has had his share of detractors and doubters in the days since narrowly escaping with a fifth-round submission win over Chael Sonnen at UFC 117. Fellow mixed martial arts legend Randy Couture is not among those ready to write off the middlewight king, but in a recent conference call for Couture’s upcoming UFC 118 bout with boxer-turned-mixed martial artist James Toney, Couture did offer a critique of Silva’s game.

Couture, who has captured five different titles in two different weight classes, says that Silva’s recent performances have illustrated a more conservative fighter than the world is accustomed to seeing.

“I think Anderson needs to look at the spirit in which he’s competing,” he said. “It appears to me that he’s been doing his best not to lose. Instead of doing what he did early on and competing to win, and taking guys out, he’s doing enough now to get by, be successful and keep winning.”

In a recent interview with David Letterman, Sylvester Stallone was talking about all the tough guys in his upcoming movie, The Expendables. The cast features a who’s who of Hollywood action heroes — Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Stone Cold Steve Austin and more. But Stallone said none of those guys can hold a candle to Randy Couture.

In an interview with MMAFighting.com, Couture talked about his status as a Hollywood tough guy — Hollywood’s toughest guy, according to Stallone — and what he thinks the future holds for him as an actor. He also touched on his upcoming fight with James Toney at UFC 118, and discussed his son’s professional MMA debut on Friday night’s Strikeforce card. The full interview is below.
