The Judges’ decisions are final and binding and not subject to challenge or appeal.

CagePotato Presents: The 10 Best UFC Brawls of the Year (So Far)

(This photo and all photos after it via Getty)

By Jared Jones

It’s the halfway-ish point of the year, which means that we are a mere six or so months away from handing out our annual Potato Awards in categories such as “MMA Fail of the Year”, “Media Shill of the Year”, and the always coveted “Krazy Horse Bennett Arrest of the Year.” But because you Taters have been good this year, we’re going to allow you to open one present early: Our definitive ranking of the best UFC brawls of the year, so far.

It’s been a rocky year for the UFC, to say the absolute least. Pay-per-view numbers are tanking, fan interest is waning due to market oversaturation, and even the promotion’s new video game has been plagued by (albeit hilarious) technical issues. But the great thing about the UFC/MMA in general is that all can be forgiven with a few great fights, and these 10 brawls are undoubtedly the kernels of corn hidden amongst the soggy floor-turds that the UFC has been shitting out this year.

To repeat: This list is only dedicated to the best *brawls* of the year, which implies a fight in which both participants take their fare share of licks. TJ Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao was a one-sided beatdown, albeit a brilliant one-sided beatdown, and therefore bears no mention here. Except that I just mentioned it. God damn it.

Let’s just get to the top 10 brawls of the year, nearly all of which contain links to full fight videos for your viewing pleasure…

#10 — Kevin Souza vs Mark Eddiva: TUF Brazil 3 Finale

(Check out Souza vs. Eddiva in its entirety here.)

A classic example of two guys with more heart than brains (or defensive capabilities) leaving it all in the octagon, Kevin Souza vs. Mark Eddiva opened up the FS1 prelims for the TUF Brazil Finale in a huge way.

Watching Souza vs. Eddiva was kind of like watching two women play Tekken for the very first time, in that both fighters only seemed to understand how one button on their controllers worked — for Eddiva it was leg kicks, for Souza it was the overhand right. These two techniques were traded with absolutely zero setup for two highly entertaining rounds, earning both men a $50,000 “Fight of the Night’ bonus in an evening of otherwise unmemorable decisions and memorable-for-all-the-wrong-ways squash matches. It was Souza, however, who walked away from the fight victorious via an always rare standing TKO.

#9 — Yui Chul Nam vs. Kazuki Tokudome: Fight Night 37

The utter ass-whooping that Kazuki Tokudome suffered in the first round of his fight with Yui Chul Nam at Fight Night 37 was comparable only to Maynard-Edgar 1 in terms of its lopsidedness. From the opening bell, Nam blitzkrieged Tokudome with big right hands both in the clinch and on the break, wobbling his Japanese counterpart multiple times in the process. Had Tokudome been that one French guy from TUF 11, he would have surely quit on his stool between rounds.

But as was the case in Maynard-Edgar 1, the second round told a different story entirely. Tokudome scored a huge double leg takedown in the opening stanza, then utilized some heavy top control to peck away at the South Korean with short shots from above. While not able to inflict nearly as much damage on his opponent as he received in the first round, Tokudome arguably earned a 10-8 of his own in the second thanks to his complete positional dominance. “Askrening”, I believe it’s called.

The first half of the third round was much of the same for Tokudome, who despite having both his eyes nearly swollen shut by the strikes of Nam, continued to dominate with top control. But you can never keep a good Nam down, as they say. “The Korean Bulldozer” (awesome nickname, BTW) was eventually able to reverse the position and secure a takedown of his own, which was apparently all he needed to earn a split decision win.

UFC 173 Results: TJ Dillashaw Knocks Out Renan Barao in Masterful Performance, Daniel Cormier Puts Dan Henderson to Sleep

(Not bad, but it doesn’t quite stack up to the original. / Props: MMAFighting)

I’ll start with the good news: Tonight’s UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw pay-per-view features two of the UFC’s greatest talents — bantamweight champion Renan Barao and undefeated light-heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier — and seeing those guys in action might be worth the PPV cost in itself. True, Barao and Cormier are both competing in lopsided odds-mismatches that are bordering on indefensible, but why focus on the negative?

In addition to “The Baron” defending his 135-pound title against Team Alpha Male standout TJ Dillashaw, and Cormier looking to earn a title shot with a win over legendary slugger Dan Henderson, tonight’s card will feature a high-level welterweight bout between Robbie Lawler and Jake Ellenberger (who are both coming off losses). Plus, Takeya “Teriyaki” Mizugaki and Francisco Rivera will attempt to build on their win streaks in the bantamweight division, and Jamie Varner kicks off the broadcast against fellow fan-friendly lightweight James Krause.

BG will be sticking round-by-round updates from the UFC 173 main card after the jump beginning at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT. Refresh the page every few minutes for the latest updates, and follow us on twitter for extra analysis and yuk-yuks. Thanks for coming.

– Tony Ferguson def. Katsunori Kikuno via TKO, 4:06 of round 1
– Chris Holdsworth def. Chico Camus via unanimous decision (30-27 x 3)

– Li Jingliang def. David Michaud via split-decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

Joe Rogan throws his jacket on, signaling the transition from free prelims to fancy pay-per-view broadcast. Wait, did he just call Fedor Emelianenko “the greatest heavyweight ever” during a discussion about Dan Henderson? Does the UFC dock him 20% of his purse for that?

Jamie Varner vs. James Krause

Krause is a full six inches taller than Varner, and has a 3.5″ reach advantage. Varner is showing off his new hipster haircut tonight.

Round 1: Varner jabbing to Krause’s body. Krause using his long legs to tag Varner low. Krause lands a front kick to the face, followed by a pair of sharp punches. Varner falls to the mat after another striking exchange; there might be something wrong with his ankle, which appears swollen. He manages to get to his feet, and bounces around. Varner shoots in for a takedown and gets it, but Krause reverses him and gets on top. Now Varner reverses and lands shots from the top. He tries to take Krause’s back but Krause gets up and out. Krause kicks at Varner’s damaged ankle. He lands again and Varner drops to the mat and turtles. Krause lets him up and continues to attack the leg. Varner keeps swinging; gotta respect the heart of Varner. One more shot and Varner hits the mat again. Krause dives on as the round ends.

And it’s all over. Varner tells his corner that his ankle is broken and they call it off. The replays show that yep, Varner rolled his ankle in multiple disgusting ways. If I find a GIF of it, I’ll pass it along.

James Krause def. Jamie Varner via TKO (injury), 5:00 of round 1.

Takeya Mizugaki vs. Francisco Rivera

Round 1: Rivera lands a hard left hook right away. Then a straight right that lands. Rivera slipping punches well and returning fire. Both guys trading heavy shots. Mizugaki rocks Rivera during a striking exchange and Rivera falls to the mat. Mizugaki jumps on and tried to finish but Rivera keeps his wits about him and controls Mizugaki’s body, slowing his attack. Rivera gets to his feet and ends up with his back against the fence. Mizugaki with a knee to the body. Rivera trips Mizugaki to the mat. Mizugaki pops up and they separate. They clinch and move to the fence. Rivera with some knees in close, and a takedown, but Mizugaki escapes and swings wildly at Rivera as the round ends.

Round 2: Rivera opens with a leg kick. Rivera lands a question-mark kick upside Mizugaki’s head. Mizugaki shoots for a takedown and Rivera grabs a guillotine and drops to the mat. Mizugaki waits it out and escapes. Mizugaki lands a big punch from the top, as Rivera is stuck sitting against the fence. Another punch from Mizugaki, who then transitions to Rivera’s back. Mizugaki looking for the rear-naked, but isn’t working too hard for it. Mizugaki softening Rivera up with short punches to the body and head. The round ends.

Round 3: Body kick Rivera. Both guys land in boxing exchanges. Mizugaki doing well with counter punches. Mizugaki floors Rivera with a straight right as Rivera throws a kick, and Mizugaki gets on top. Mizugaki throwing some punches here and there; Rivera seems content to play defense. Joe Rogan wonders if Rivera came into the fight sick or injured; that’s how unimpressive he’s looking. The ref stands ‘em. Both guys swinging for the fences. Rivera eats a hard one. Last 30 seconds. Lots of haymakers, none landing cleanly. Both guys whip their arms around at the air until the last horn ends.

Takeya Mizugaki def. Francisco Rivera via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x 2)

Robbie Lawler vs. Jake Ellenberger

Ellenberger comes out to Coolio’s “Gangster’s Paradise.” (Seriously.) Robbie comes out to Weird Al’s “Amish Paradise.” Just kidding, but damn, that would be epic.

Round 1: Lawler lands a hard left head kick to start the fight…and another. Then one to the body. Another high kick. Ellenberger chases and Lawler sticks a left hand while retreating. Lawler throws the high kick again. Lawler lands a knee to the body. Ellenberger whiffs an uppercuts. He comes in with a hook, Lawler fires a high kick. Lawler lands some hard punches as Ellenberger moves in. Body shot from Ellenberger, Lawler fires the high kick, and one more at the horn. 10-9 Robbie.

Round 2: Ellenberger comes in and swings a big right hand, Lawler throws a kick, lands some punches. Lawler with a nice knee against the fence. Lawler stalking forward and stinging Ellenberger with punches. Ellenberger shoots in, grabs Lawler around the waist, and half-lands a head kick as Lawler shakes out. Lawler with a straight left. And another. Lawler battering Ellenberger with power punches. Ellenberger shoots and manages to get a takedown. Lawler smiles and reverses the position, just like that. Lawler firing punches at Ellenberger’s head. Lalwer lands a knee to Ellenberger’s face as Jake gets up. Ellenberger scores another takedown and fires down an elbow, but Lawler easily kicks out and gets up. Front kick and punches from Lawler. They clinch on the fence and the round ends. 10-9 Lawler again.

Round 3: Lawler with a perfectly timed knee as Ellenberger comes in. But then Ellenberger storms forward with a series of power punches that have Lawler on his heels. Lawler scores with a knee and a sharp jab that snaps Ellenberger’s head back. Ellenberger is nursing his right hand, which might have been injured during his barrage of punches. Ellenberger with a body kick. Lawler sticks the jab. Sharp 1-2 from Lawler. Another punch and Ellenberger winces, squints. He might have taken a shot straight to the eye. Lawler blasts in with a knee to Ellenberger’s face, hitting him in the same damn eye, and Ellenberger crumples to the mat. He’s done. Lawler fires punches down until the ref jumps in.

Robbie Lawler def. Jake Ellenberger via TKO, 3:06 of round 3

Dan Henderson vs. Daniel Cormier

Cormier runs out to the cage. He wants this bad.

Round 1: Cormier opens with a left high kick. Hendo returns one to Cormier’s leg. Hendo misses on an overhand right, Cormier grabs him and rag-dolls him to the mat. I mean, it’s scary how easy that was for him. Hendo working on a weird crucifix from the bottom, but DC pulls out of it. Cormier in side control, dropping shots to Henderson’s body. Cormier tries to work to mount, but Henderson defends. He tries again and gets it for a second, but Henderson shrimps out and establishes guard. Henderson tries to kick Cormier off, Cormier dives back on, smothering Henderson on the mat. Henderson looks for a leg lock before escaping. They’re back on their feet. Cormier with a front kick. Henderson almost trips Cormier to the mat. They clinch near the fence and the round ends. 10-9 Cormier.

Round 2: Henderson jabbing, trying to set up that power right hand. He throws it, but doesn’t land. He shoots in, Cormier defends and gets on top. Cormier in side control. He transitions to back mount, Henderson scrambles away. Cormier stays on him, throwing punches to the body, elbows to Hendo’s head. Cormier roughing Hendo up, but not coming close to a stoppage yet. Henderson covering up as Cornier continues to slug him in the head. Cormier with an elbow to the ribs. Cormier beating Hendo up from every position on the ground. He holds on until the horn. The crowd boos it.

Round 3: Cormier throwing out kicks high and low, then basically throws Henderson over his head like a goddamned pro wrestler (GIF PLEASE), and kicks out Hendo’s feet when he tries to get up. Cormier back on top, scoring points with his ground and pound…but not putting Henderson away, and getting booed as a result. Cormier gets bored beating Hendo against the fence, so he pulls him away from the fence and continues to beat him. Cormier sinks his hooks for a rear-naked choke attempt, and puts Henderson face down on the mat. Cormier squeezes, and Henderson goes out before he can tap. My goodness.

Daniel Cormier def. Dan Henderson via submission (rear-naked choke), 3:53 of round 3

Cormier grabs the stick during the post-fight interview and calls out light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones, telling the champ he can’t hide from him. (“Hurry up, because I’m getting better.”) Cormier vows to take Jones down over and over again. I’d watch that. Henderson says he might compete at middleweight going forward, which isn’t a bad idea. Retiring wouldn’t be a bad idea either, but I doubt that’s in the cards.

Renan Barao vs. TJ Dillashaw

Dillashaw is a “monkey style fighter,” I guess. Neither fighter has been taken down in their UFC careers.

Round 1: Dillashaw bouncing around in Dominick Cruz-esque fashion. He lands a quick low kick, and a nice counter punch as Barao advances. Dillashaw with a head kick. Barao returns a body kick. Low kick from Dillashaw, and a big uppercut. Dillashaw tags Barao with a left hand as Barao was loading up for a kick. Barao tries a spinning kick and lands hard with a right hand. Nice switch low kick from Dillashaw. Dillashaw ducks under a Barao punch and scores with a pair of punches. Inside leg kick Dillashaw. Barao lands an outside leg kick. Dillashaw lands a punch that FLOORS Barao. Dillashaw swarms and Barao threatens with a leg lock, but Dillashaw shakes out and jumps on Barao’s back, looking for a neck crank. Barao escapes and Dillashaw fires a head kick as the round ends. Wow. That was a 10-9 for Dillashaw (!?), close to a 10-8.

Round 2: Barao keeping Dillashaw at bay with front kicks. Barao lands a punch and a knee. Okay, he’s back in the fight. Dillashaw is cut near his right temple. Dillashaw lands a sharp right, and Barao gives two right back. Barao lands a nice counter as Dillashaw charges in. Dillashaw with a leg kick, and a high kick that’s caught. Good punches from Dillashaw. Barao misses a spinning back kick but lands a follow-up right hand. Dillashaw shoots, and almost gets Barao to the mat, but Barao springs up. Barao kicks Dillashaw directly in the cup, and Dillashaw needs a break. He’s back in after a minute. Dillashaw still throwing with speed and power. He drills Barao with a right straight. They trade kicks. Body kick Dillashaw. Inside leg kick Barao. Barao lands a series of head-punches. Dillashaw digs a hook to the body. Dillashaw fires punches to the head and body as the round ends. Another 10-9 for Dilly.

Round 3: Both guys still keeping a crazy fast pace in round three. Dillashaw dodges a front kick and reappears behind Barao to punish him with punches. They trade low kicks. Barao misses a high kick. Dillashaw with a body kick, but eats a counter punch. Dillashaw lands a punch, a head kick, another punch. Barao is getting bombed on. He fires a body kick, not out of it yet. Another body kick. Dillashaw with a switch kick to the leg, and a burst of punches behind it. Great head kick from Dillashaw. Dillashaw might have been kicked in the balls again, but he slaps fists with Barao and continues fighting. Dillashaw unloads on Barao against the fence. Barao looks shaky on his feet. Oddly, Dillashaw decides to clinch instead of firing more punches, and the round expires. 10-9 Dillashaw.

Round 4: Dillashaw goes for a single-leg right off the bat. He lands his reliable left head kick. Dillashaw attacking with punches and lands a hard body kick. Dillashaw with a nasty left hand and another kick. Barao misses a spinning back kick and Dillashaw makes him pay with counter punches. Barao lands a good punch in a striking exchange, but Dillashaw resets and goes back to his domination on the feet. They clinch against the fence. Barao rolls out, but slips during a firefight and Dillashaw gets on top of him. Barao tries to grab a leg when he gets a chance, but no dice. Elbows from the top from Dillashaw. There’s the horn. It’s 4-0 Dillashaw going into round 5. One more, and he’ll earn one of the most unexpected shutouts in UFC history.

Round 5: Both guys jabbing. Hook to the body from Barao, Dillashaw returns a kick to the body. Barao misses his spinning kick again, and Dillashaw pops him. Sharp leg kick from Dillashaw. More Cruz-esque footwork from TJ, and Barao is baffled. Dillashaw dodges a series of punches like a damn white Anderson Silva. He lands a head kick, follows it up with a storm of punches, and Barao is on his back after eating a point-blank left straight. Dillashaw jumps all over Barao, raining down right hands until the ref jumps in. Absolutely crazy. TJ Dillashaw is the new UFC bantamweight champion, and Renan Barao never had a chance.

TJ Dillashaw def. Renan Barao via TKO, 2:26 of round 5

Joe Rogan calls it the greatest performance he’s ever seen. Without a doubt, we just witnessed something special. Did anybody give TJ a chance here? Dillashaw came out of nowhere and became an elite-level world-beater in a single night. Good for him. He believed in himself even if few others did.

UFC 169 Salaries: Alistair Overeem Craps His Way to $400K, Aldo, Mir, Faber and Trujillo Also Clear Six Figures

(“What are you doing out there, Alistair? Quit playing around and put a *real* hurting on this guy!” Photo via Getty.)

The official salaries for UFC 169 were released earlier today, and despite being panned by 100% of Dana Whites across the globe, Alistair Overeem and Jose Aldo managed to walk away with the two highest salaries of the evening, banking $407,143 and $240,000, respectively. In a slight departure from what we have come to expect, three other fighters also cleared six figures at UFC 169, although in the case of Abe Trujillo, it was thanks greatly in part to the pair of “end of the night” bonuses he picked up for his second round KO of Jamie Varner to open up the main card.

The full list of salaries for UFC 169 is below, so follow us after the jump and take a gander, then entertain us as we yell at a wall.

Alistair Overeem: $407,143 ($285,714 to show, $121,429 win bonus)
Jose Aldo: $240,000 ($120,000 to show, $120,000 win bonus)

Per usual, we should inform you that these figures are absent of any undisclosed locker room bonuses, training fees, etc.

Underpaid: Once you realize that former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner only makes 17k to show after 11 years in the game, you start to understand why he’s so willing to put it all on the line, even if it means walking face first into his opponent’s fists, to secure an “end of the night” bonus. We’re not saying he’s underpaid per se, considering he’s dropped 3 out of his past 4 fights, we’re just saying that it sucks to see how undervalued he is.

Who else? Let’s scan down the list here an-RENAN BARAO ONLY MADE 22K R U SRS BRO?! RICARDO LAMAS MADE 10K TO FIGHT FOR A TITLE?!! GAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Alright everyone, we are live for the UFC 169 PPV card!  The first seven (7!) fights all went to decision so if you’re just tuning in now congrats on not wasting your life, we must be due for something good.

Abel Trujillo vs. Jamie Varner

Varner took this on slightly short notice as an injury replacement for Bobby Green and he’ll be looking to keep his career resurgence going against the the up and comer Trujillo.

Round 1- Left hook lands for Varner.  Good one-two from Trujillo.  Right hand lands from Varner.  Two big shots just miss from Trujillo.  Varner hits a right hand and Trujillo answers.  Good even exchanges so far.  Ducking left hook for Varner.  Trujillo clinches and tries for a takedown but Varner reverses and has Trujillo’s back.  Varner rolls with him and stays on the back looking to sink in hooks.  They scramble and Varner is in north south working a choke.  The attempt looks deep but Trujillo gives the classic thumbs up.  Varner tightens the choke but releases and tries to transition to mount but looses position and they return to the feet.  A wild exchange ensues and both fighters are clipped but seem okay.  Good straight left lands from Trujillo followed by a knee, great round. 10-9 Varner.

Round 2- Trujillo comes out firing but mostly missing.  Front kick from Varner.  Left hook tags Trujillo and tries to pounce but Trujillo fires back and clips Varner who shoots in on the legs.  They are both standing and Varner clips Trujillo who goes against the fence and then slumps forward for a takedown.  Varner sprawls and works strikes.  Varner swivels to the back as Trujillo rises against the cage.  They go rock em sock em robots against the cage and Trujillo is taking the worst of it but is still in the fight, but he is seriously wobbled.  Out of nowhere Trujillo unloads a right hand that puts Varner out cold!!! Wild fight, holy shit.

Abel Trujillo defeats Jamie Varner via KO, 2:32 of round 2

Trujillo admits in the post-fight interview he was seriously hurt before getting the KO, love the honesty and the warrior spirit! This will be hard to top for FOTN and maybe KOTN.

Ali Bagautinov vs. John Lineker

Lineker has more UFC experience and top level KO power for 125 lbs. but Bagautinov can bring it and has shown it up to this point.  Lineker struggled to make weight (again) yesterday so we’ll see if his gas tank can last if it needs to.  Winner of this might get a Flyweight title shot in this new, emerging division.

At the check-in point they clip Lineker’s fingernail as Rogan starts with the mani/pedi jokes. NJ commission is world-class and Lineker cannot seem to keep his shit together.

Round 1- Lineker stalking and rips a right but Ali times it well and hits a takedown, looking to pass from full guard. Lineker working elbows from the bottom and man, he really does hit hard.  Ali postures up and looks to rain down strikes.  Ali trying to pass but Lineker doing a good job maintaining full guard.  Lineker spins for a leg lock agains the sambo master as Rogan clowns on him.  Ali switches to a heel hook of his own and sits back on it, looked good but Lineker spins out and they stand.  Lineker taunts Ali to stand and strike.  Lineker stalking again as Ali moves around the edge of the Octagon.  Lineker throws a right body kick with Ali catches and uses to take Lineker down where he is on top in half guard throwing punches.  Lineker trying for a kimura from the bottom as round ends.  10-9 Bagautinov.

Round 2- Low kicks from both men to start.  Ali dives in on the legs for a takedown but it’s from way too far out and they end up against the fence.  Ali flurries with strikes and they tie up in the clinch.  They split, left hooks from Ali as he moves constantly to avoid Lineker’s power.  Huge body shot right punch from Lineker and two more, ouch, these look good.  Ali dives for a takedown which fails and those body shots hurt him.  Lineker opening up and starting to tag Ali and the momentum is shifting.  Ali dives under a punch for a takedown.  Lineker sprawls and throws elbows to the body as he rises against the fence.  They separate and Ali hits some good punches to the head of Lineker, kick is blocked and Ali goes for a takedown which fails.  Round ends with a flurry, Lineker landing some heavy shots.  10-9 Lineker.

Round 3- By my unofficial scoring it will come down to this round.  Ali wades in through strikes and get a takedown from a clinch trip but Lineker gets back to his feet.  Ali throws Lineker back down from the body lock.  Ali working to full mount as Lineker works a kimura and recovers half guard.  Lineker uses the fence to get back up but gets hit with a left and then taken back down by Ali.  Half guard with Ali on top and Rogan makes the good point that Lineker’s cardio remarkably seems okay as we’re halfway through the third round.  They are clinched against the cage with Ali working knees.  They separate, one minute left.  Ali dives in on a leg and gets it, even from quite far out.  Ali working strikes on top as Lineker goes for a leg lock and eats some strikes to pay for it.  The fight ends with Lineker working a leg lock as Bagautinov stands up flexing and playing to the crowd.  10-9 Bagautinov.

Ali Bagautinov defeats John Lineker via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

Frank Mir vs. Alistair Overeem

Time for the big boys to throw down.  Both have been on the wrong end of KO’s as of late and the loser could be out of the UFC.

Round 1- BIG DUDES! Touch of the gloves and some feeling out.  High kick by Mir, body punch from Overeem.  Low kick by Overeem and a right hand from Mir.  Mir comes in with strikes and clinches but Overeem reverses and throws some knees.  They split, leg kick from Overeem and he lands a short left hand on Mir.  Left hook behind the ear of Mir.  Thai clinch from Overeem and a knee to the body makes Mir spit.  Overeem drops Mir with a knee to the head from the clinch and he is hanging on for dear life on the ground as Overeem pours it on.  Overeem is pinning Mir’s hand behind his head big brother style.  Mir eats a knee to the body but rises to his feet!  Did Overeem gas again@!!?!? They split and back on the feet.  Overeem looks fresh still, that cardio training has paid off.  Mir comes in with a kick and a punch that are slow and miss.  They clinch and Mir drops for a leglock but ends up on the bottom in half guard.  Overeem drops two hammerfists and an elbow to the midsection.  Round ends with Overeem on top but Mir survives.  10-9 Overeem.

Round 2- Straight left from Overeem snaps Mir’s head back.  Leg kick from Mir and then another which is checked.  Overeem catches a leg and throws Mir like a small child to the mat but backs off.  Mir comes in with strikes that are slow again and miss.  Overeem clinches and throws knees to the body against the fence.  Ref separates them and back to the center.  Overeem throws three big strikes which land.  Mir runs in and scores a bumrush takedown.  Overeem sitting up against the cage with Mir trying to stay on top.  Mir briefly threatens with a guillotine but loses it and finds himself on the bottom with Overeem throwing strikes again.  Overeem continues to work strikes on top in half guard.  Mir is bloodied around his right eye in multiple places.  Big left elbow from Overeem and Mir is getting beaten up.  Mir gets full guard from the bottom and tries to use the cage to roll and reverse.  Overeem stands up while Mir lays in guard.  Ref stands them up and the round ends.  10-9 Overeem.

Round 3- Two high kicks miss from Mir.  Mir tries for a takedown, runs into the brick wall of Overeem’s body and then pulls guard.  Overeem does not want to play on the ground and stands up.  Mir shoots for another takedown but again has to pull guard and ends up on the bottom in half guard eating some punches from Overeem.  Two big left hands land from Overeem on top and Mir ties him up.  Overeem working strikes to the head and body from guard.  Overeem is laying a methodical beating on Mir and he stands up to force Mir to rise.  Big straight right rocks Mir who looks longingly at the clock.  Overeem begs Mir to swing at him but Mir just flails a weak kick and eats two more big strikes from Overeem as the right ends.  10-9 Overeem.

Alistair Overeem defeats Frank Mir via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

Champ Jose Aldo vs. Ricardo Lamas

For some reason the heavier fight is not the headliner.  Lamas is rocking a great mohawk mullet, may it give him the strength he needs because Aldo is the clear favorite and maybe the pound for pound best.

Round 1- Leg kick from Lamas and another.  Head kick misses from Lamas.  Aldo throwing lots of fakes and feeling Lamas out.  Two minutes in and Aldo has thrown three strikes.  More leg kicks from Lamas which Aldo is mostly checking.  Two strikes and a kick from Aldo.  Spinning kick to the body from Aldo.  Jumping head kick from Lamas is blocked.  Body kick from Lamas and he slips and Aldo pounces throwing head and body shots but no major damage.  Lamas working more kicks, high and low, none landing.  Right hand from Aldo to the head and rips another to the body.  Two spinning kicks miss from Aldo.  First round ends with Aldo throwing flying knee and punches.  More missed than landed in that round, fortunately we’ve got four more if we need them! 10-9 Lamas.

Round 2- Aldo checks a leg kick and blocks a high kick.  Lamas throws a slow wheel kick which also doesn’t land.  Punch and low kick from Aldo, that hurt.  Straight right from Aldo.  Leg kick from Lamas doesn’t land fully, body punch from Aldo and two more.  Good leg kick from Aldo, his are way more successful than Lamas’.  Aldo clips Lamas with a left hand.  Good leg kick from Aldo.  Jabs and a leg kick from Aldo, he’s starting to turn it up.  Another leg kick bends Lamas around.  Wheel kick misses from Lamas.  Lamas’ leg is starting to give out on the kicks.  Wheel kick again from Lamas that is blocked followed by another that totally misses.  10-9 Aldo.

Round 3- Lamas comes out with a front kick and then a body kick.  Leg kick from Aldo.  Punch and a leg kick from Aldo.  Aldo blocks a head kick and throws a leg kick.  Aldo with more leg kicks and punches.  Lamas tries for a single leg takedown but Aldo shrugs it off.  Lamas with a head kick that was close, leg kick from Aldo, obviously.  Front push kick frmo Lamas and Aldo drills him with a leg kick.  Uppercut from Lamas and an overhand right from Aldo.  Two jabs and a straight right from Aldo.  Lamas misses with two headkicks.  Body punch from Aldo and another leg kick.  Lamas is still in the fight though, he’s taking it and pushing on, throwing strong strikes of his own.  Right hand and leg kick from Lamas.  Lamas got Aldo with a right.  10-9 Aldo.

Round 4- Aldo has tended to fade in the championship rounds, we’ll see how this goes.  Lamas goes for a single leg takedown which Aldo defends as he backs against the cage.  Lamas lifts Aldo into the air against the cage and Aldo just chills there in midair for awhile.  Aldo reverses and puts Lamas against the cage.  Aldo trips Lamas and takes him to the mat.  Aldo on top in side control looking for an arm triangle.  Aldo now in half guard.  Lamas with butterfly guard and Aldo jumps over them and lands in mount.  Lamas rolls and gives up his back.  Aldo goes for a choke but can’t get it under the chin.  Lamas gets to his feet and now shoots in on Aldo who has his back against the cage defending against Lamas.  10-9 Aldo.

Round 5- I think Lamas has to finish here to win. Lamas comes out aggressive with a flurry of body kicks.  Lamas swings for the fences but misses and Aldo presses him against the cage.  Aldo drags Lamas down against the cage and is in full guard.  Aldo moves to side control and then mount.  Lamas throws his hips and reverses Aldo.  Lamas now on top in full guard.  Lamas diving down with strikes but Aldo defending.  Big elbow from Lamas and he wants it but Aldo is doing a good job of somewhat desperately tying him up.  Lamas’ corner is screaming that he needs to finish and Lamas is pouring it on.  Aldo ties him back up in full guard and is hanging on tight.  A few final punches and elbows from Lamas as the round ends.  10-9 Lamas and I think Aldo will take it three rounds to two, but who am I?

Jose Aldo defeats Ricardo Lamas via unanimous decision (49-46 x3)

Aldo gives Lamas credit in his postfight interview as the humble champ retains the belt.

Champ Renan Barao vs. Urijah Faber

Faber has been on an absolute tear since his previous loss to Barao and he steps up on short notice for another crack at a title that has eluded him since earlier in his WEC days. Barao has been on a run of his own, dude hasn’t lost since 2005 in his first fight.  Faber has lost his last 5 title fights and won everything else, he is still evolving and improving but you have to wonder at age 34 if he’ll get another shot if he loses tonight. My heart wants Faber, my head says Barao, it’s tough out here.

Round 1- Kicks and punches from both to start, nothing landing.  Faber catches a leg and lands a left on Barao.  Lots of kicks from Barao, nothing really landing so far.  Body shot by Faber, he slips and briefly turtles up as Barao strikes.  Faber stands up with a spinning back fist and he smiles at Barao.  Body shot head shot combo from Faber and his striking looks good, thanks Duane Ludwig.  Head kick blocked from Barao.  Good leg kick by Barao.  Barao floors Faber with a punch and dives in.  Faber covering up for his life but he gets back to his feet!  Barao hits Faber some more and he tries for a leg desperately.  Barao drops Faber again and Faber goes flat on the canvas for a second before grabbing Barao’s leg again.  Barao raining down punches as Faber covers up.  Referee Herb Dean jumps in and stops the fight.  Faber holds on in disbelief to Barao’s leg and tells Dean that he was fine and giving a thumbs up.  It’s to no avail and the champ retains his belt.

Renan Barao defeats Urijah Faber via tko, round 1

From where I sit, on my couch, that was a bad stoppage.  No one except Herb Dean is in the cage making those calls officially but we’re all entitled to our opinions.  My opinion is that Faber should have been given every opportunity to stay in that fight and he was robbed of that.  I bet Eddie Wineland agrees.

Faber stays classy in his interview but agrees the stoppage was early, obviously, and suggests that “a limp body” would be a better indicator to stop the fight.  Rogan suggests that Chad Mendes, Faber’s teammate should get the next shot, Faber reminds Rogan that Mendes is a weight class above.  ”I’m retarded,” muses Rogan, outsmarted by a guy who was on the verge of consciousness a minute ago.  And on that note, have a good night.
