UFC 267 featured two title fights that crowned a new interim champion in Petr Yan and a new light-heavyweight champion in Glover Teixeira. The return of Khamzat Chimaev did not disappoint, and one of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s proteges made his claim in the lightweight division.
There was a lot to take away from UFC 267, here are some things that stood out.
Return to Fight Island
The UFC returns to the Etihad Arena at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. It seems like it’s been a while since the UFC had to use the location, but as the fight business moves forward in this “new normal”, the location will likely become a regular part of the UFC’s operations for a while, especially with the vaccine mandate required for anyone coming into the U.S. and not everyone on the same page when it comes to getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
All ESPN+
It’s still a pay per view but ESPN+ subscribers only had to pay their regular monthly fee and not a separate cost on top of their monthly subscription, like they normally do. This is likely due to the UFC mega card going on next weekend from Madison Square Garden that is UFC 268 and not to do UFC fans any favors. No one is going to buy two in a row.
Referee Vyacheslav Kiselev
You know it’s bad when you’re pulled from your assignment during a live event. The sport is violent, so safety has to be paramount and with the news of fighters dying recently in combat sports, pulling him was definitely the right move. It may have taken away from the win that Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos got over Benoît St. Denis, but it’s best if the problem gets solved now rather than later.
Khamzat Chimaev
He may have been sick but anyone that doubted Chimaev and the hype he has behind him got a reminder when he returned in this event. Kamaru Usman has to deal with Colby Covington next week, but if he is only going to beat him again, who else is there left for him to fight but a guy like Chimaev?
Petr Yan Captures Interim Title
A five-round war ensued between Yan and Cory Sandhagen. Sandhagens’ reach advantage seemed troubling to Yan at the start but as he weathered the storm, his strategy of catching and returning fire would prove useful as he picked up the unanimous decision victory.
Islam Makhachev
The next great lightweight, it seems, is Makhachev, but there is always an asterisk next to the name of someone fighting someone that has any label like coming in on short notice. His original opponent was supposed to be Rafael dos Anjos but withdrew due to injury and was replaced by Dan Hooker. Hooker coming off a recent win and ranked at number six according to the UFC lightweight rankings made more sense for Makhachev than it did Hooker, but Hooker’s not a fan favorite because he turns down fights.
Still, the question of who is next always comes up after a win, and while Daniel Cormier thinks it should be Justin Gaethje, Gaethje has his own plans for UFC 268.
And New!!!
Yes, Yan won his interim bantamweight title but he is 28 years old and making his way in MMA. Dana White said in the post-fight press conference, “Glover Teixeira is and has been one of the toughest guys in the division.” So, to put in the time and get to this point at 42-years old, just after his birthday he accomplished what many thought he could not. What he does next, is up to him but for now, he proved that never giving up will always deliver.
There’s obviously more to take away from this event than what is listed here. With Teixeira now the king at light-heavyweight, does he defend or retire? Either would likely be fine for fans, and Yan holding the interim title, White confirmed it will be he and Aljamain Sterling for the undisputed title. UFC 268 goes down next week, so don’t get too cozy.

Spectacularly, Glover Teixeira is the new undisputed UFC light heavyweight — submitting champion, Jan Blachowicz in the second round with a taut rear-naked choke in the headliner of UFC 267.
Some good early work for Teixeira in the first round, who manages to score a takedown from his first attempt, and assume top position in guard for some considerable time, taking the first round most definitely.
Stunning Blachowicz with a decent combination, Teixeira attempted to take the champion to the canvas for the second time, however, it was Blachowicz who put himself on his back via a kimura trap. Immediately establishing mount, Teixeira swiftly locked in a rear-naked choke, becoming the second oldest champion in the history of the UFC.
Below, catch the highlights from Teixeira’s title victory against Blachowicz.

Jan Blachowicz made his latest light heavyweight title defense against Glover Teixeira.
The two fighters met in a bout on Saturday (October 30, 2021) at the UFC 267 pay-per-view event from Abu Dhabi at the Etihad Arena. The first round was all Teixeira, who scored an early takedown and worked him over with strikes. Jan started to let his hands go in the second round.
After stuffing a takedown, Jan landed a good combo before being taken down. Teixeira got his back and locked in the rear-naked choke for the win. Teixeira is the NEW champion.
Peep the highlights of the fight courtesy of the UFC’s official Twitter account:
Blachowicz entered this fight after beating Israel Adesanya by decision at UFC 259 in his first title defense. He won the light heavyweight title with a TKO win over Dominick Reyes at the UFC 253 pay-per-view event. Before that, he got a first-round KO win over Corey Anderson at the UFC Rio Rancho event.
Teixeira went on a 5-fight winning streak to earn this title shot. He beat Thiago Santos with a rear-naked choke in November 2020, earned a second round TKO win over Anthony Smith at UFC Jacksonville in May 2020, and edged out Nikita Krylov at the UFC Vancouver event. He also got wins over Karl Roberson and Ion Cutelaba.

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC 267: Blachowicz vs. Teixeira results throughout the night (Sat. 30th. October 2021) from the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Taking main event status in the promotion’s return to ‘Fight Island’ in an undisputed light heavyweight title fight between reigning division champion, Jan Blachowicz, and the #1 ranked one-time title challenger, Glover Teixeira.
Blachowicz enters his second consecutive event headliner off the back of his first successful title defense back in March at UFC 259, when he handed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya his first professional loss in a unanimous decision victory over the course of five rounds.
Undefeated in his last five straight bouts, Minas Gerais veteran, Teixeira managed to lastly take home an impressive, rallying third round rear-naked choke victory over one-time title challenger, recent headliner, Thiago Santos back in November of last year at the UFC Apex facility.
In the night’s co-headliner, an interim bantamweight title fight between former undisputed champion, Petr Yan and the #3 rated contender, Cory Sandhagen is also slated.
In his first bout since dropping his undisputed title via disqualification back in March at the aforenoted UFC 259 event, Yan looks to rebound from his first promotional loss after he landed an illegal knee on now-champion, Aljamain Sterling.
Suffering a close split decision loss against former two-time division champion, T.J. Dillashaw back in a July headliner in Las Vegas, Nevada — dynamic Elevation Fight Team trainee, Sandhagen had scored a pair of stunning knockout wins over both Frankie Edgar and Marlon Moraes prior to the judging defeat.

Jan Blachowicz can recall a defining moment in his career, the knockout of Luke Rockhold.
Jan Blachowicz is getting ready to defend his light heavyweight championship for the second time at UFC 267. Now as the reigning champ, Blachowicz is at the pinnacle of his career. In the lead-up to this fight with Glover Teixeira, Blachowicz took a trip down memory lane to remember a defining moment in his career.
“So I think the moment I change in thinking was when I knock out Luke Rockhold,” Blackowicz told PerthNow. “That’s when I thought, what I do in the gym, I need to do the same in the Octagon. So I start doing that and now I’m champion.”
That knockout of Luke Rockhold began the winning streak that Blachowicz rode all the way to the title. He is now 11-5 in the UFC and perhaps in the best shape of his life. Not only was the win at UFC 239 a turning point for him, but it was a pleasurable experience because of Blachowicz’s feeling towards Rockhold.
“So I was happy because he is not good person,” Blachowicz explained. “He’s arsehole. And that was really important for me to finish the fight in this way. Not with points but in that kind of way. A lot of people who train with him, they tell me ‘be careful because he is strong, unbelievably strong’. So (that knockout), it was a really important moment for me.”
Blachowicz will be taking on Teixeira in the main event of this weekend’s UFC 267 live from Abu Dhabi. As for Luke Rockhold, he recently pulled out of his bout scheduled for next week at UFC 268. His return to the UFC has him back at middleweight so it is unlikely these two will have the option to run it back.
What do you think of Jan Blachowicz’s assessment of Luke Rockhold?
