The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is currently searching for Jimmie Rivera’s replacement opponent. “El Terror” was supposed to face Bryan Caraway at a UFC Fight Night event in Phoenix next Sunday (Jan. 15). Caraway pulled out with an injury.

The movers and shakers at the world leader in mixed martial arts (MMA) may not have to look much further. Former flyweight contender John Dodson took to Twitter to throw his name in the hat of potential replacements.

See it for yourself:

“The Magician” was one of the most feared strikers in the 125-pound division. He knocked out three opponents is his five wins as a flyweight inside the Octagon. Prior, he won The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 14 bantamweight tournament when he knocked out T.J. Dillashaw. Of course, Dillashaw ended up being the UFC 135-pound title holder.

In his first bout back at bantamweight, Dodson starched Manvel Gamburyan in 47 seconds. He then met John Lineker in a back-and-fourth thriller that saw his opponent edge it out. Dodson may be 1-2 in his last three bouts, but he always looks to put on a show and he’s usually in the fight at all times.

Should he step up to meet Rivera, it’ll be no picnic. The Team Tiger Schulmann bruiser hasn’t lost since his second bout back in Nov. 2008. That loss was a split decision. Rivera turned some heads when he knocked out Marcus Brimage in the first round in his UFC debut.

Decision wins over Pedro Munhoz and Iuri Alcantara earned him a bout with former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) featherweight king Urijah Faber. “El Terror” pulled of the biggest win of his career, outworking “The California Kid” to a unanimous decision.

As of this writing, nothing has been made official, so stick with MMANews.com for more details on Rivera’s replacement opponent as they become available.

The first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event of 2017 was dealt a blow today. A bantamweight bout between Bryan Caraway and Jimmie Rivera has been scrapped for the Jan. 15 card. MMAJunkie.com brought word that Caraway suffered an injury that has forced him to pull out. The search for Rivera’s replacement is underway.

It’s a tough break for both men who are coming off the biggest wins of their careers. Caraway pulled off an upset over previously unbeaten prospect Aljamain Sterling back in May 2016. The win shot “Kid Lightening” up to No. 10 on the bantamweight rankings. Caraway has won two straight fights.

Rivera last fought at UFC 203 and was able to outwork the now retired “California Kid” Urijah Faber to earn a unanimous decision win. “El Terror” sits at No. 8 in the 135-pound division. Rivera’s only loss occurred in the second bout of his professional career.

The rest of the Phoenix card remains unscathed. The main card will be headlined by a featherweight clash between rising prospect Yair Rodriguez and UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn. Lightweight veteran Joe Lauzon will go toe-to-toe with former Bellator contender Marcin Held. Veterans Court McGee and Ben Saunders will also be showcased.

Stick with MMANews.com for more details on Rivera’s status on the card as they become available.

Urijah Faber Cut 21 Pounds During UFC 203 Fight Week

After losing a one-sided decision to bitter rival Dominick Cruz in a bantamweight title bout last June, longtime veteran and former WEC champion Urijah Faber seemed to be contemplating his fighting future. While not necessarily saying that he was considering retirement, Faber made it clear that the end could be near, but it wouldn’t come without at least one more fight as he returned to action against Jimmie Rivera on the main card of this past weekend’s (September 10, 2016) UFC 203.

Unfortunately, the downward spiral continued for “The California Kid” as he suffered yet another decision defeat in a bout that he had little success in. The somewhat poor performance could be attributed to a grueling weight cut as Faber recently revealed that he shed 21 pounds during the week leading up to the fight:

“I don’t know (what’s next),” Faber told UFC.com (Via MMAJunkie) after his loss. “I’m going to go back and relax. This week I came and I was doing my water load and I cut 21 pounds since Tuesday, so that was kind of rough. I’m going to take some time and think about things and watch the fight and see what happens after that. I’ve got no plans.”

Faber has had trouble dealing with leg kicks at points during his career, and Rivera appeared to have exploited that weakness. “The California Kid” admitted that his leg went numb during the fight, also saying that he saw few opportunities to take the fight to the ground, which was his goal:

“He caught me with a low ankle kick that kind of made my leg go numb for a second for whatever reason,” Faber said on UFC 203’s post-fight show on FS2. “He’s tough. He’s a solid guy. I got my arms on him a couple times and he’s like a slippery barrel. Just round.

“I was going to definitely look for some openings on scrambles and stuff like that, but you get yourself in danger when you’re just hunting for a takedown,” he continued. “I was definitely looking for opportunities to take it to the ground if I could, but he was so compact and small to find any openings for a lot of stuff. There wasn’t as many opportunities.”

Would you like to see Faber continue to compete at this stage of his career?

UFC 203 pops off from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH, this Saturday (September 10, 2016). The two primary narratives that have the masses buzzing are the main event and the debut of a certain sports entertainment superstar.

The headliner of the UFC’s first event in Cleveland is a good one. Ohio native Stipe Miocic will make the first defense of his newly-minted heavyweight strap. Miocic got his hands on the belt by viciously ripping it from the grasp of Fabricio Werdum, who happens to be serving in the co-main event this weekend. With a single right hand, Miocic felled the recklessly onrushing Brazilian, simultaneously stamping himself into the history books.

He will be doing battle with hulking Dutch knockout machine Alistair Overeem. “The Reem” rides a four-fight winning streak into his first UFC title fight. He will be looking to add the premiere piece to a trophy case that already includes Strikeforce, Dream, and K-1 heavyweight gold.

Also on the main card is the much-talked about and much-maligned MMA debut of former pro wrestler Phil “CM Punk” Brooks. He will lock horns with 2-0 Mickey Gall, found on Dana White’s “Lookin’ for a Fight” series. Despite being just two fights into his pro career, Gall is veritable veteran next to Punk, who boasts no amatuer fighting or combat sports background of any kind.

These two storylines have driven most of the conversation relating to the UFC’s latest offering on pay-per-view (PPV), but there are other compelling narratives worthy of your attention. Here are five of them.

The usual names have generated the most interest leading up to UFC 203 Saturday night, including a fighter who has yet to compete in an actual MMA match.

But slightly buried on the pay-per-view main card is a 27-year-old nicknamed “El Terror” that could have his defining moment.

Jimmie Rivera gets to face multi-time UFC title contender and former WEC champion Urijah Faber in a bantamweight bout that will be second on the PPV lineup right before CM Punk takes on Mickey Gall and the two heavyweight battles close out the show.

If you don’t know who Rivera is yet, search UFC Fight Pass for any of his three previous wins. That includes a finish of Marcus Brimage in just over a minute and a pair of decision victories vs. Pedro Munhoz and Iuri Alcantara.

The former Cage Fury Fighting Championships bantamweight champion and former King of the Cage flyweight titleholder has competed previously for Bellator and was cast on the 14th season of The Ultimate Fighter. His run on TUF ended at the hands of Dennis Bermudez, but he won all four of his fights with Bellator.

In fact, Rivera hasn’t tasted defeat since a 2008 split decision loss in his second MMA fight. He’s reeled off wins in his last 18, with six being finishes.
