History was at stake when Charles Oliveira made the trip to the Octagon to fight Christos Giagos on the prelims of tonight’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil.

The flashy, constricting submission specialist had scored 10 tapouts in his eight-year UFC tenure. The number tied him with UFC and MMA pioneer Royce Gracie for the most of all-time. The current lightweight and sometime featherweight had an up-and-down UFC career at times. His grappling, however, was always one of the most dangerous single skillsets in mixed martial arts.

The Brazilian mat technician proved why once again in Sao Paulo, submitting Giagos with a rear-naked choke. He finished UFC foes with six different submissions. With this latest win, he now passes Royce Gracie for the record of most submissions in UFC history. He’s submitted Jeremy Stephens, Clay Guida, Darren Elkins, and Myles Jury, among others.

Oliveira is now in a class of his own in a fitting piece of UFC history after two longtime fighters had retired on the card. Watch his record-breaking submission here:

In the world of martial arts, if there are two opponents of similar strength, weight and musculature, the one with the superior skills and training will win more often than not.  This appears to be a prime example of this concept. Be honest, did you see this absolute demolition coming? Props to this woman for […]

If you ask any one fan which martial art was key in the explosion of MMA, most would point to Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It was Royce Gracie’s domination at UFC 1 that caused the world to go into a manhunt for BJJ gyms in the nearby areas. These days, it’s obvious that you need to be […]

3 Reasons the Diaz Brothers Need to Leave Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

Like most natural-born fighters, brothers Nick and Nate Diaz obviously won’t ever grow accustomed to losing. Nick illustrated this theory when he threatened to retire after each of his last two setbacks to Carlos Condit and Georges St-Pierre at UFC 143 and UFC 158, respectively. And Nate, who’s suffered back-to-back losses to Benson Henderson and Josh Thomson, […]

Tim Kennedy: ‘I’m Chael Sonnen with Better Jiu-Jitsu and Better Hands’

UFC middleweight/United States Army veteran Tim Kennedy isn’t one to pull his punches in or out of the cage. Therefore, it’s no surprise that he was quite candid when asked by Above and Beyond MMA how he felt a potential fight with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva would go.  I think I could beat him. […]
