There has been a never-ending string of opinions in the wake of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s ill-timed brawl following his UFC 229 main event win over Conor McGregor.

The UFC’s biggest-ever pay-per-view event last Saturday (Oct. 6, 2018) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, was supposed to be ‘The Eagle’s’ crowning achievement. In one way it was, as he submitted former two-division champion McGregor. However, that potentially historic win was marred by his actions shortly thereafter.

Khabib leaped into the crowd to fight McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, inciting a wildfire of violence. Three of Khabib’s teammates then scaled the cage and assaulted the Irish superstar. The bad blood definitely stems from McGregor’s infamous Brooklyn bus attack, and that’s understandable.

However, UFC 229 provided the stoic Khabib with the opportunity to shut McGregor up in the Octagon. He did that. But his normally soft-spoken style was uprooted by his actions. One UFC champion believes Khabib should not have allowed McGregor’s disrespect to change his own actions.

That man is middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. “Bobby Knuckles” sent a well-liked tweet Khabib’s way containing a deep quote about respect:

A Good Point

The 185-pound ruler has a good point. Nurmagomedov spent the majority of the build-up to UFC 229 keeping his mouth shut even though he probably wanted to explode inside.

Khabib accomplished his ultimate goal and dominated McGregor from pillar to post. There was no need to stoop to his level and commit outside-the-cage violence. The commission presiding over UFC 229 is not impressed and admitted that in a recent statement.

Khabib and McGregor will both face a complaint from the NSAC for their parts in the melee. The champion’s situation seems to be a bit more dire as the commission withheld his purse. Dana White doesn’t believe the NSAC should keep his whole $2,000,000 or strip him of the title. Khabib’s punishment is very much up in the air.

He’s soared up the UFC pound-for-pound rankings in the meantime.

History was at stake when Charles Oliveira made the trip to the Octagon to fight Christos Giagos on the prelims of tonight’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil.

The flashy, constricting submission specialist had scored 10 tapouts in his eight-year UFC tenure. The number tied him with UFC and MMA pioneer Royce Gracie for the most of all-time. The current lightweight and sometime featherweight had an up-and-down UFC career at times. His grappling, however, was always one of the most dangerous single skillsets in mixed martial arts.

The Brazilian mat technician proved why once again in Sao Paulo, submitting Giagos with a rear-naked choke. He finished UFC foes with six different submissions. With this latest win, he now passes Royce Gracie for the record of most submissions in UFC history. He’s submitted Jeremy Stephens, Clay Guida, Darren Elkins, and Myles Jury, among others.

Oliveira is now in a class of his own in a fitting piece of UFC history after two longtime fighters had retired on the card. Watch his record-breaking submission here:

Former UFC title challenger and longtime color commentator Kenny Florian may have retired from MMA back in 2011, but the Ultimate Fighter season one veteran has continued to compete at jiu-jitsu tournaments ever since.

Florian took on Vitor Ribeiro at the Abu Dhabi World Championship over the weekend, and the result was not in the former UFC fighters’ favor.

“Shaolin” Ribeiro managed to choke the 40-year-old with a clock choke after a spirited effort by Florian. The Brazilian used his right hip to control the former UFC contender, and ultimately used his forearm to choke Florian’s throat after nearly five minutes of action.

The choke was so slick and quickly applied that many in attendance and those watching  via stream were unaware that Florian had been choked unconscious. Prior to the choke, Florian managed to stifle the Brazilian with an effective De La Riva guard and the match was indeed a close one up until the finish.

Ribeiro himself competed in MMA as well, and has not fought professionally since a 2010 loss to Justin Wilcox under the Strikeforce banner. The Brazilian compiled a 20-5 record in mixed martial arts, with 14 of those victories coming by way of submission or (technical) knockout.

K-Flo retired from the sport after a tough decision loss to then-undisputed featherweight champion Jose Aldo back at UFC 136. Florian has remained a popular figure within the promotion and frequently acts as color commentator during UFC events on FOX and FS1.

“Shaolin” has also retired from active competition in mixed martial arts, and runs his own Jiu-Jitsu school in New York City.
