Bellator 122 Results: Koreshkov Batters McDonough, Halsey Submits Cooper, Parisyan Obliterates Baroni

Bellator’s first event under Scott Coker’s reign is over. Andrey Koreshkov blasted Adam McDonough en  route to a unanimous decision victory and Brandon Halsey dominated Brett Cooper with a first round submission win.

The event was one of Bellator’s better ones. We’ve recapped the entire card for you (and threw in some GIFs–which are all courtesy of Zombie Prophet/Fansided):

The Bellator 122 prelims were packed with action. Saad Awad pulled off one of the best TKOs from the bottom in recent memory against Joe Duarte. After getting blasted with a right hand, Awad crumbled to the mat. However, Duarte got over aggressive and Awad snagged him in a triangle. The ref called the fight about a billion elbows to Duarte’s temple later. Check out the GIF.

Other significant prelim happenings: The unheralded Fernando Gonzalez upset Bellator mainstay Karl Amoussou via unanimous decision. Gonzalez was simply quicker and better conditioned. One has to wonder about Amoussou’s future in Bellator.

Bellator put a light heavyweight tournament semifinal on the prelims. Kelly Anundson took on Luiz Philipe Lins, but the fight didn’t last long. Lins collapsed to the canvas a few minutes into the first round with a knee injury. Anundson was therefore awarded with a TKO victory.

More prelim action: Wrestling standout Bubba Jenkins steamrolled over Poppies Martinez, taking him down and scoring a TKO via ground and pound (GIF) in the first frame.

The main card started with what was the true main event of the night (for us at least): PHIL BARONI VS. KARO PARISYAN. Unfortunately, it didn’t really live up to our expectations. Baroni came out completely flat. As soon as Parisyan turned up the “heat” [Editor’s note: We’re so sorry. The intern who came up with that line has been let go], Baroni became a deer in the headlights…then a dead deer on the hood of a car. The end was particularly brutal as he was finished while sitting in Indian style (GIF), just absorbing punches to the head in a total stupor. We really, REALLY hope he retires at this point.

Next up came highly touted British Prospect Liam McGeary vs. Egidijus Valavicius in the next light heavyweight tournament semifinal. McGeary kicked Valavicius to the curb. After taking a handful of punches, McGeary clinched Valavicius. A minute or two later, a flurry of lethal knees and uppercuts (GIF) from McGeary ended the fight; Valavicius was out on his feet. McGeary will face Kelly Anundson in the finals of the light heavyweight tournament.

In the co-main event, Brett Cooper met Brandon Halsey in the middleweight tournament final. Halsey controlled the bout during the minute or two that it lasted. Halsey clinched Cooper, took him down, and then arm barred him (GIF). It almost resembled a Ronda Rousey fight in that aspect.

The co-main event saw Andrey Koreshkov face Adam McDonough in the welterweight tournament semifinal. It was domination from bell to bell. Koreshkov landed an array of strikes (included a wicked spinning back kick) that kept McDonough puzzled throughout the fight. Koreshkov was too fast, too accurate, and his sprawls were too powerful for McDonough, a wrestler with anemic striking, to mount anything resembling an offense. It was a strong performance for Koreshkov, who earned a title shot with the win. It was a strong performance for Bellator, too. The fight card was energetic, fun, and left us with that “let’s shadow box with our shirts off” feeling.

Here are the complete results:

The Strikeforce Challengers 18 event on Aug. 12 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas sold a total of 549 tickets for a gate of $53,670, the Nevada athletic commission revealed Wednesday.

A total of 1,956 tickets were issued, with 1,341 tickets papered and 66 left unsold. According to reported salaries, fighters earned $92,000 in purses and win bonuses on the 10-bout card.

The numbers for Strikeforce Challengers 18 was an improvement from the promotion’s debut at the Palms Casino Resort on July 22 when Strikeforce Challengers 17 sold 458 tickets for a gate of $42,987.50.

However, both shows drew far less than the The Ultimate Fighter Finale cards which also call the Pearl at the Palms its home base. At the TUF 13 Finale in June, the UFC pulled in 1,494 paid for a live gate of $429,000.

Strikeforce Challengers 18 was highlighted by Joe Duarte outpointing Jorge Gurgel in the main event and Ronda Rousey making her Strikeforce debut with an armbar win in 25 seconds.

Joe Duarte beat Jorge Gurgel by unanimous decision in a close, competitive fight in the main event of Friday night’s Strikeforce Challengers event.

It was a decision that easily could have gone either way, as Duarte landed some clean punches and was successful in repeatedly taking Gurgel down, but Gurgel was active from his back.

The big question now is whether Gurgel has anything left. A former UFC fighter and Ultimate Fighter alum, Gurgel is still fairly well-known among MMA fans, but he has now lost three of his last four fights, and five of his last seven. Gurgel isn’t good enough to beat high-level UFC or Strikeforce opponents, and at age 34 we may have seen the last of him on a Zuffa-owned fight card.

In other Strikeforce Challengers action:

— Nate James outlasted Danillo Villefort to win a unanimous decision. Villefort was in control early on, but he quickly tired out and looked exhausted by the start of the second round. James’ superior cardio allowed him to take charge as the fight went on, doing enough in the second and third rounds to win the decision.

Pat Healy beat Eric Wisely by unanimous decision in a fight notable mostly because of the significant size advantage Healy had: Wisely was game off his back, but he should probably move down to featherweight, while Healy is a big lightweight and was able to control him from the top for 15 minutes.

— In the bloodiest fight of the night, Derrick Mehmen won a unanimous decision over Roy Jones despite fighting the second and third rounds with an enormous cut over his left eye: At the start of the second round Mehman went for a takedown just as Jones went for a spinning kick, and the result was Jones’ heel connecting with Mehman’s head, opening up a huge cut. Referee Herb Dean called a pause in the action to allow the ringside doctor to check the cut, and it was surprising that the doctor allowed the fight to go on. But the fight did continue, and Mehmen used his takedowns and wrestling to control the fight and win the decision.

— The night’s biggest controversy came when Ronda Rousey fought Sarah D’Alelio: Rousey quickly took D’Alelio down and sunk in an arm bar, and then referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in and stopped the fight, even though D’Alelio didn’t tap. Rousey got the win by submission, but Strikeforce should book a rematch to let these two settle it themselves — and Mazzagatti shouldn’t be the ref for that rematch.

Jorge Gurgel faces Joe Duarte at Strikeforce Challengers.Strikeforce has received more attention recently for what’s going on outside the cage — and who’s being cut from the promotion — than for the actual fights. But we’ll turn our attention now to what’s actually going on inside the cage, as Strikeforce returns on Friday night with its latest Challengers card, featuring a main event of Jorge Gurgel vs. Joe Duarte.

What: Strikeforce Challengers: Gurgel vs. Duarte

Where: Palms Resort Casino, Las Vegas

When: Friday, the Showtime televised card begins at 11 PM ET.

Predictions on the five televised fights below.

Jorge Gurgel vs. Joe Duarte
Duarte is currently riding a four-fight winning streak and finished all four opponents in the first round, but Gurgel represents an enormous step up in competition for Duarte. The 34-year-old Gurgel fought seven times in the UFC and is now heading into his fifth fight in Strikeforce, and he feels a little out of place in Challengers, which is supposedly for younger and less experienced fighters. Both Gurgel and Duarte are better on the ground than they are on their feet, but I expect Gurgel to turn this into a slugfest and win a decision.
Pick: Gurgel

Danillo Villefort vs. Nate James
Since losing his first and only shot in the UFC two years ago, Villefort has gone 4-0, including a couple of very good performances on a couple of Shark Fights cards, beating Joey Villasenor and Matt Horwich. The 12-7-1 James is a step down from Villasenor and Horwich, so Villefort shouldn’t have too much trouble winning this one.
Pick: Villefort

Pat Healy vs. Eric Wisely
The 28-year-old Healy already has 43 pro fights on his record, including a win over Lyle Beerbohm in the main event of a Challengers card in February. The 27-year-old Wisely is 17-5 and has beaten some solid opponents, including beating Hermes Franca twice last year in Franca’s first two fights after being cut by the UFC. I think Healy wins a decision.
Pick: Healy

Ronda Rousey vs. Sarah D’Alelio
The women’s fight is the most interesting fight on this card. Rousey is a judo Olympian who turned pro in MMA this year and is 2-0, and I think she’s going to be too big and strong for D’Alelio, who’s 4-1 and coming off a loss to Julie Kedzie.
Pick: Rousey

Roy Jones vs. Derrick Mehmen
Jones, who is not related to the boxer of the same name, has torn through most of his opponents while fighting in small Iowa promotions: He’s 6-1, with all six wins lasting less than 90 seconds. Mehmen is also a veteran of small Iowa promotions, and although I think he’ll last longer than 90 seconds with Jones, I think he’ll get stopped.
Pick: Jones
