At this Saturday’s UFC 216 PPV (pay-per-view event) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, there is a huge interim lightweight title fight taking place in the main event that will see Tony Ferguson fight Kevin Lee. The expectation is that it will be one of the best fights of 2017.

There is a shadow over this fight in the way of lightweight champion Conor McGregor, who has not been seen in the world famous Octagon since November of 2016 when he beat Eddie Alvarez to become the new champion at UFC 205.

The winner of the main event this weekend should get the opportunity to challenge for the real title. The UFC Champion has suggested in the past that he’s open to the idea but he has also laid out numerous other possibilities for his next fight. His coach wants a trilogy bout with Nate Diaz and he has entertained fighting Paulie Malignaggi in a boxing bout.

Longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan addressed the singular greatness of McGregor during a recent edition of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). He talked about how McGregor has gone from a low level fighter to superstardom and why there will never be another like him.

“You’re never gonna see another one like him because he’s a unique person. He’s literally being himself. You’re gonna see a bunch of people try to mimic that and in a sense, he sort of mimicked the people who came before him, like the Chael Sonnen’s and the Muhammad Alis and the people that were really good at talking s**t. The difference is, what Conor’s been able to do is he’s the first guy in the UFC that’s been able to do that, that’s had spectacular results, and also showed his real character in losing and then coming back and winning very quickly afterwards against the same guy – the Nate Diaz fight. That was a very important character exposing fight because he lost a fight, he got humbled, and then he jumped right back on the horse and then wound up winning. Then he comes back and blows Eddie Alvarez out of the water to become the first two-division, concurrent champion in the sport.”

McGregor has proven over and over that he is the biggest star MMA that has ever been seen. His latest bout, which was a boxing bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. sold over 4 million pay-per-view buys. Although he lost the bout by TKO in the 10th round, Rogan believes that that’s just proof positive of how “extraordinary” the lightweight champion is.

“I think he’s a unique guy in a very – it’s almost like we don’t have a word strong enough [to describe him]. Unique isn’t a strong enough word. . . He’s got brilliant ability. He’s incredibly smart. He’s very innovative in his techniques and his approaches and I think he has phenomenal coaching as well.

“He’s a combination of a lot of things. He has a brilliant team. John Kavanagh, his coach, is a brilliant coach. He’s got amazing jiu-jitsu coaching and striking coaching and his mind, he understands how to apply these things. His ability to perform under pressure is fantastic. You saw that in the Mayweather fight. Even though he lost that fight, he hit Mayweather with some pretty good shots and he won the first three rounds against the greatest boxer of all-time. That’s extraordinary. Conor’s an extraordinary person. He has greatness.”

The short amount of time that it took McGregor to reach the top of the MMA (mixed martial arts) promotion is amazing in itself as he made his UFC debut only four years ago by scoring a KO victory over Marcus Brimage in 67 seconds.

He is at a point in his career where he can clear at least 1 million pay-per-view buys for any fight that he is involved in. Rogan strong believes that the next fight that McGregor is in will be the biggest fight in UFC history due to the fact that the UFC Champion is the most popular fighter in the world now.

“I don’t think it hurts his stock in any way. I think it elevates him. His next fight in the UFC, whoever it will be, will be probably the biggest fight in UFC history, especially if it’s Nate Diaz because Nate Diaz is a huge name. If Nate Diaz and him decide to do it one more time I think that will be the biggest fight ever in the history of the sport because I think Conor has eclipsed the sport, largely.

“He’s the biggest combat sport athlete not just of today, but ever. There’s no one like him.“

The second biggest boxing bout of the year took place over the weekend when Canelo Alvarez finally fought Gennady Golovkin after years of build up. In previous years, this would have been seen as the biggest boxing bout of the years.

However, it is not due to the fact that it took place in the same year as the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor super fight. Despite the fact that the super fight took place almost a month ago, “The Money Fight” still casts a shadow over every other combat sports event in the world.

Longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan recently hosted a fight companion on the most recent edition of The Joe Rogan Experience for the boxing bout and UFC Fight Night 116 on Saturday night.

During the podcast, Rogan suggested that McGregor has a future in professional boxing, possibly even a rematch with Mayweather.

“He’s f**king Floyd Mayweather,” said Rogan (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “He’s one of if not the best boxer ever and Conor did catch him with a couple of things. . . They should [rematch]. Why not? I think Conor would have to beat somebody good in a boxing match and he would also have to have a real training camp.”

As seen in his fight with the boxing legend, McGregor not only lived up to the hype but did better than many fans, fighters, and analysts thought that he would do as he won a few early rounds of the fight before he was stopped by strikes in the tenth round.

The ability to draw big PPV numbers makes McGregor an enticing proposition for any professional boxer. It could even lead to a fight with Alvarez who is the biggest draw in boxing at the moment. Rogan thinks it’s a possibility and one that would get McGregor back into the ring.

“I don’t think [Conor is done boxing]. Look, he went the very first fight against the greatest ever, and he didn’t look too bad. If there’s a legit, big fight – say if Canelo Alvarez steps up and says that he wants to fight Conor McGregor, [Conor] might do it.”

“It wouldn’t be a smart move. The difference between Canelo and Floyd – Floyd was just a brilliant boxer. Canelo is a murderous puncher, and he’ll f**k you up. He’ll hurt you. [Golvokin] is not a good fight for him either. Neither Canelo nor Golvkin is a good fight for him. They’re terrible fights for him. Those guys are different.”

Following the boxing bout that saw boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. finish UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in the tenth round, there has been a second storyline involving McGregor and his future as a professional boxer.

After their sparring session as well as the exchange of trash talk, many fans believe that a bout between McGregor and former boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi could be in the works. As a result of this feud, Malignaggi has been beefing with other MMA fighters and fans. Now you can also add MMA commentators to that list.

Longtime UFC color commentator Joe Rogan took to the defense of the MMA community by letting the former boxer know that he stands no chance if he decides to step inside the world famous Octagon.

During a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience Fight Companion podcast, Rogan stated that Malignaggi should “shut the f**k up” because Malignaggi has no chance in a fight against any good MMA fighter.

“He should shut the f**k up because if he wanted to have a UFC fight he can go over there and get his brain kicked in,” said Rogan (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “He’s out of his mind. Stop talking. You’re a boxer. You’re a very good boxer. Just shut your mouth.

“There’s literally a million people in the world that could grab you and strangle the life out of you, and there’s not a god-damn thing you could do about it. Sorry dude. Don’t talk s**t. They will give you a wrestler, and he will punch your f**king face into pulp, and there’s not a god-damn thing you could do about it. Not a god-damn thing.”

Malignaggi, who is a former two-time world champion in boxing who retired earlier this year, has gone on record by saying that he wants to fight McGregor regardless of money. Malignaggi has taken shots at MMA fighters over social media, including current featherweight champion Max Holloway.

According to Rogan, he believes that this is stepping over the line and Malignaggi doesn’t know what he would be getting himself into. It should be noted that Rogan has made it clear that he is actually on board for a McGregor-Malignaggi boxing match.

“What does Paulie weigh? [1]45 right? How about you give him Ricardo Lopez. How about you give him Yair Rodriguez, how about that? Give him a guy that’s not the top of the food chain. Don’t give him Frankie Edgar, don’t give him Jose Aldo. You don’t need to do that.

“Imagine what Max Holloway would do to Paulie Malignaggi in an MMA fight. Just imagine it. Just try to wrap your head around the kind of a**-f**king he would receive. Max Holloway would literally kill him if he wanted to. Literally, kill him. He’d probably f**k C.M. Punk up.”
