Gegard Mousasi made another defence of his middleweight title when he faced off against John Salter in the Bellator 264 main event on Friday evening.
The challenger got off to a pretty decent start in round one. Salter secured a takedown and was able to maintain position, drop some strikes and ultimately see out the round on top.
Mousasi turned things around in round two. The Frenchman was able to land at will during the first few minutes. Salter momentarily escaped from the relentless pressure of Mousasi by once again taking the fight to the mat. Unfortunately for Salter, it wasn’t long until Mousasi escaped and went to work in the clinch before finishing the round with some nasty ground strikes.
The finish came in round three. Salter looked tired and Mousasi was shrugging off his takedown with ease. One particular attempt leaves Salter on his back and vulnerable. Mousasi jumps in with nasty ground and pound that ultimately forces the referee to wave off the fight.
Post-fight, Mousasi squared off with Austin Vanderford who appears to be next in line for a shot at the Bellator middleweight king.
How do you see Gegard Mousasi vs. Austin Vanderford playing out?

Former Bellator middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi is hungry to regain his title.
The former UFC star lost his middleweight strap after getting outpointed by Rafael Lovato Jr. back in June. He has since rebounded with a split decision win over Lyoto Machida.
And with the news that Lovato is dealing with a brain condition that will keep him on the sidelines indefinitely, Mousasi could find himself challenging for the title again.
Although Lovato has not vacated his title or been stripped, it could very well be a possibility if he is unable to fight in the near future. And Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima recently expressed his interest in challenging Mousasi for a vacant title.
That sounds fine by Mousasi, who is also open to facing John Salter for a potential vacant belt.
A Mousasi vs. Lima fight would be a very intriguing contest and certainly one of the biggest fights Bellator would be able to put out.
We’ll just have to see if that’s something Bellator president Scott Coker is also interested in, especially after seeing Mousasi dominate then welterweight champion Rory MacDonald back in 2018.

Bellator came back into our lives in a big way last night, as Bellator 132: “Freire vs. Straus 2” took place at the Pechanga Casino Resort in Temecula, Calif. Scott Coker‘s new beloved baby gave us some pretty wild and disgusted finishes from top-to-bottom, proving the second-best MMA promotion in the world is must-see TV every time.
Not one fight went to a decision on the prelims, and the finishes were downright disgusting. Please don’t watch them with your family, hovered around the tube with Michelina’s for everyone (all Vines/Gifs courtesy of ZombieProphet, after the jump.)

Preliminary Card
Everett Cummings got the better of Jason Glaza in the lone heavyweight bout of the night, scoring a technical submission win via rear naked choke:
Dustin Jacoby will probably need to fine tune his grappling game before entering the Bellator cage again, since the Glory fighter fell victim to a rear-naked choke, courtesy of UFC alumni John Salter:
Chris Herrera nearly murdered Luc Bondole with an early knockout of the year candidate, thanks to the latter walking into the fiesty middleweight’s brutal combo:
Also winning by knockout, Steve Kozola torched Jonathan Rivera with some brutal shots in the second round to win their lightweight contest:
And finally, in one of the more grotesque images you’re going to see this weekend, Albert Morales scored a rear-naked choke over Fabian Gonzalez, and the victim was forced to tap while wearing the crimson mask and blood gushed out of his face:
Main Card
In the main event, Patricio Freire retained his featherweight title in a rematch against Daniel Straus, defending it for the first time since besting Pat Curran at Bellator 123. It was a pretty odd fight, with a handful of nut shots, an eyepoke, and some wild occurences, but “Pitbull” was able to keep the gold with a fourth-round rear naked choke …
…but that came with a price.
Oh, and here’s a bad low blow, followed by some ground and pound.
In his second Bellator stint, former WSOF featherweight champion Georgi Karakhanyan made this MMA stuff look easy, choking out Bubba Jenkins with a guillotine and secured a title shot in his next bout. Herb Dean’s officiating was pretty alarming, to say the least.
Also on the main card, Virgil Zwicker defeated Houston Alexander, and Fernando Gonzalez beat Marius Zaromskis, yet we’d much rather show you a Kimbo Slice hype promo.
