The Importance Of OSU Wrestling To Primitive & Modern MMA

Oklahoma State University has a rich history of producing elite-level mixed martial arts fighters and has been doing for several decades. Oklahoma State University has a rich history of producing elite-level mixed martial arts fighters and has been doing for several decades. The school’s wrestling team has long been one of the best in the country and for some reason, its athletes always seem to bet on MMA as their follow-on career.

In the late 1980s before MMA or the UFC was even a thing Don Frye and Randy Couture were teammates on the OSU wrestling team. The pair would go on to become pioneers in the sport of MMA and legends of the game.

Frye entered the UFC in its very early days when the sport lacked many of the rules we see in place today – one such rule was no weight classes. Frye won the UFC 8 tournament and the UFC 1996 tournament too. Although in those days they didn’t have a belt system he was for all intents and purposes a UFC champion and remains a fight legend.

Couture left OSU with his place in the Hall of Fame secure and went to work on achieving the same feat inside the UFC. His list of accomplishments is staggering, to say the least. ‘The Natural’ held UFC titles on six occasions. He was the first fighter to become a champion in two different weight classes and he was also the oldest ever champion when winning the heavyweight strap at 45 years old – he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2006.

In more recent times you have had guys like Johny Hendricks emerge from OSU to become UFC champions. ‘Big Rig’ won two NCAA Division I championships during his years at college where he finished with an overall wrestling record of 159 – 13. The now retired MMA fighter took to the sport like many from OSU – naturally. He had the elite level grappling base and ungodly power in his hands that made him the UFC welterweight champion.

Currently Daniel Cormier is the man flying the flag for OSU in the UFC. The 41-year-old was a standout wrestler at OSU and went on to represent the USA at the 2004 Olympics coming fourth. He was named captain for the 2008 games but was forced out due to kidney failure brought on by excessive weight cutting. Since transitioning to MMA in 2009 he has enjoyed great success and is arguably one of the greatest fighters ever. ‘DC’ won the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix just 10 fights into his professional career. He went on to join the UFC an become a dual weight champion at light-heavyweight and heavyweight, he was just the second fighter to do so.

While the OSU wrestling team has produced three UFC champions and a tournament winner it has also produced a lot of other high calibre fighters who still made a massive impact despite not reaching the lofty heights of UFC gold. Shane Roller, Jared Rosholt, Jake Rosholt Mark Munoz, Muhammed Lawal were all part of the OSU wrestling team and all went on to become world-class MMA fighters.

Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks says light-heavyweight king Jon Jones should have several losses on his record.

Hendricks made the comments while speaking to BJPenn.com about his loss to Georges St Pierre. Many fans believe ‘Big Rig’ was robbed of victory against long-time champion ‘GSP’ at UFC 167 in November 2013. Despite suffering a tough loss Hendricks doesn’t seem to have too many negative emotions towards the situation.

“After that fight, I went home, and then we went to Disney World and that’s when I found out I was fighting Robbie Lawler for the belt. So, I didn’t have much time to kick back and re-watch.”

“The fans knew what happened. I think I got more fans off that fight because I handled the loss well. Even though I did lose, the way I handled myself afterward. Now, that I’m retired I don’t really worry about it,” Hendricks explained. “It did bother me at the time, like not having a win over GSP hurt me. But, now that I look back, everything happens for a reason and I got a title shot anyway and won the belt in Texas. It’s the hard part of the career knowing your life is in the judges hands.”

Hendricks went on to say fate just wasn’t on his side against ‘GSP’. ‘Big Rig’ referenced 205lb great Jones to explain how sometimes it’s just bad judging that decides things, he said.

“They say you have to beat the champ to be the champ. You have to destroy the champ in order to win the belt. I’ve seen Jon Jones lose multiple times but still held onto the title. I think I would’ve been the champion a little longer. But, fate wasn’t on my side. You just deal with what you got.”

Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks has explained how USADA played a role in his early retirement from MMA.

Hendricks captured the welterweight title by beating Robbie Lawler at UFC 171. At his peak ‘Big Rig’ was one of the best 170lb fighters of all-time. However, once USADA came into the UFC his performances seriously dropped off. Hendricks ended his MMA career 2-5 and missed weight three times. Speaking to BJPenn.com Hendricks insisted he was a clean athlete but said USADA rules meant he was unable to properly recover from his weight cuts and triggered his early retirement from the sport.

“You know what, I’ll be honest with you, I had 26 random USADA tests and I passed them all. Whenever USADA came in, did my body ever change? What hurt me the most was I always thought if I can’t live life to the fullest then what’s the point? I like to drink beer and eat fast food,” Hendricks said. “But, I train just as hard, and if I can’t eat and drink I’ll retire. If I couldn’t enjoy my life and do things with my family, then I won’t do it.

“What sucked, was you have fighters that actually cheat,” he continued. “That’s what kills me about the world in general, you know they are cheating, why are they letting them still fight? It hurts the people who aren’t cheating.”

“With IVs, I did really well because I could have the shittiest weight cut ever, pop in an IV, and the next day I was like 80, 90 percent recovered,” he said. “It made me perform the best that I can. Look at how things are now, a lot more people are getting knocked out.

“Although you have 30 hours to re-hydrate, I don’t care if you put down 10 gallons of water, your body can’t absorb it,” Hendricks added. “What hurt me, was after a bad weight cut and no IVs, I couldn’t get back to that 80 or 90 percent. You would need a perfect weight cut and a perfect re-hydration for that to happen.

“For me, I would be on my death bed, give me an IV and I’ll be good. When IVs were removed I remember being in a fight after a minute and thinking where I am,” he continued. “That’s what hurt me is that my muscles, to cut weight, it was tough. I’m not saying I should’ve been that heavy, but that’s why I’m retired. I liked to eat and drink and used the IVs to recover.”

Nick Diaz rip

Nutritionist Mike Dolce has told the story about the time Nick Diaz attempted to jump former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks.

Hendricks had initially missed weight by less than one pound for his first fight against Robbie Lawler at UFC 171 in 2014. Diaz was in the crowd taunting ‘Big Rig’ for his weight miss, calling his welterweight rival “heavy” and “fat”. According to Dolce, the abuse didn’t stop there, the nutritionist explained.

“When he steps on the scale, who’s front and center? Nick Diaz,” Dolce began. “Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz are sitting front and center. Nick Diaz is heckling Johny on the scale, talking shit to Johny while Johny’s trying to weigh in. Insane. So Johny is a little bit over, they announce he’s a half a pound over, he gets off the scale, he walks over, he does the little face-off with Robbie, it’s no big deal. We get off, everyone wants to do media and I say guys, leave us alone. We have work to do. We’re still working right now, please leave us alone. We’ll be back in an hour to make weight, then you can talk and ask any question you want.

“We grab his gear, we go
outside,” Dolce continued. “As we’re walking through the parking lot, Dana
White’s personal bodyguard comes running over, and he’s f**king massive. Like
an NFL linebacker, like 6’6”, 300 pounds, ripped, in shape, yolked, big f**king
Hawaiian dude. He’s like ‘Dolce, Dolce, you can’t go man, you’ve got to be
careful! Nick Diaz is looking for Johny, he wants to fight him!’ I was like
‘what? What are you talking about?’

“He’s like ‘he’s looking for him in the parking lot, right now, he wants to fight Johny Hendricks right now in the parking lot!’ I was like ‘are you f**king kidding me?’ Then all of the sudden we hear people screaming like ‘there he is!’ All of the sudden like a riot breaks out in the parking lot. Johny is all geared up, we’re all geared up. We’re going to finish cutting half a pound of f**king weight, and we’re like ‘oh fuck, Nick Diaz and all the 209 boys are about to jump us in the f**king parking lot — like during the f**king UFC weigh-ins. So we snatch up all our gear and we’re like we gotta get the f**k out of here before these boys figure out it’s us. So we’re like running with our gym bags and our gear, running through the parking lot, run across the street, get to the place we’re going. We’re like ‘that was f**king crazy.’” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)
