The MMA world is anxiously awaiting the return of longtime former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who will step back into the Octagon against arch rival Daniel Cormier in the main event of April 23’s blockbuster UFC 197 pay-per-view (PPV) from Las Vegas.

“Bones” won his last fight over “DC” at 2015’s UFC 182, but was infamously suspended and stripped of his title belt when he became the subject of a brief manhunt after he allegedly hit a 25-year-old pregnant woman in his adopted home of Albuquerque, New Mexico and fled the scene. He turned himself in and struck a plea deal for the felony charges, agreeing to probation and numerous public appearances to help repair his image.

As far as fighting goes, Jones never lost his belt, as the vacant title went to Cormier when he submitted former top contender Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson in the main event of last year’s UFC 187. Now reportedly sober and intensely focused on regaining the belt, Jones has posted several photos of himself looking huge and ripped after undertaking an intensive weight training regimen.

While Cormier has speculated that may actually hurt Jones’ abilities in the cage due to the fact he always relied on speed, agility, and accuracy to beat his opponents with his very unorthodox striking, one of “DC’s” FOX Sports broadcast parters doesn’t agree. During a recent appearance on Bloody Elbow’s ‘Heavy Hands’ podcast, former UFC fighter-turned-announcer Brian Stann said that Jones now being bigger and stronger is a scary proposition for his opponents, and that includes his rematch with Cormier:

“I haven’t seen anything technically that leads me to believe he’s gonna be able to take Jon down consistently. Especially now that Jon has discovered weight lifting.”

“And Jon’s a unique athlete. Never lifted weights but you try to get your hands on him and his instincts for leverage and wrestling are phenomenal. I’ve watched him train with heavyweights and make them look really, really bad.”

As a former member of Jones’ home base of Greg Jackson’s MMA, Stann would know seemingly what he’s talking about, and indeed Jones posted a recent photograph on Instagram of him training with former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski:

No word as whether or not he made the Belarusian bruiser look bad in training, but the general consensus is that Jones will handle Cormier with ease when they meet in April. Cormier, a former heavyweight who won the Strikeforce World Grand Prix at the weight class, could be in for the fight of his life.

Of course, the same thing could be said about Jones, although the reason is quite different, as the talented but troubled former champion has been his own worst enemy. What, if anything, will be different for “Bones” this time around?

Former Champ Thinks Daniel Cormier Can ‘Definitely’ Defeat Jon Jones

Rashad Evans may have been disconnected from the UFC light heavyweight title picture for almost two years due to series of frustrating knee injuries, but the former champion and FOX Sports analyst still kept his eyes open on the 205-pound landscape.

‘Suga’ returned to meet formerly surging Ryan Bader at last October’s UFC 192, but the effects of ring rust seemed to hold him down and he dropped a clear-cut decision to ‘Darth.’

Now set to face Glover Teixeira at UFC on FOX 19 after his original opponent ‘Shogun’ Rua was forced out, Evans recently gave his take on the awaited UFC 197 title rematch between 205-pound champion Daniel Cormier and his onetime student and friend, former champion Jon Jones, during an appearance on this week’s The MMA Hour.

Evans noted that while he does believe Cormier can beat Jones where he failed at 2012’s UFC 145, he must do just that in order to bypass retirement:

“I think that DC definitely can [win]. He definitely can. You know, DC, he seems different this time around. He seems different this time mentally speaking. Honestly speaking, this is a fight that DC…he has to win. Like, if DC doesn’t win this fight, there really — he would have to retire if he doesn’t win this fight.”

Evans elaborated on that all-or-nothing view, noting that Cormier just would not have too many options with two losses to the pound-for-pound king. ‘Suga’ believes that would break Cormier’s desire to be the best, because Jones would have effectively solved any and all discussion of just whom the best light heavyweight is:

“It’s like, what does he do then?” Evans said. “Does he try to face Jon again for the third time? Once you take away a man’s desire to be the best — or he knows that he can’t be the best — then in a sense, you just kill that man off. So if he loses this fight, Jon would have killed him off. There’s no reason. The competitive grind would be gone.”

Host Ariel Helwani noted that Cormier could then go back up to heavyweight, a division in which he earned a 13-0 record in on his way to the Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix belt. But with his friend and teammate Cain Velasquez still looking to fight for the UFC belt there, things could get a little complicated, ‘Suga’ thinks ‘DC’ would no longer want to put his body through the punishment required to be the best if he loses to Jones twice:

“Maybe, maybe,” he said. “Maybe so. I just don’t think that DC, being so successful with the FOX gig and stuff like that, I don’t think the desire to put his body through it will outweigh the life that he could have if he didn’t do it.”

We’ll have to wait and see if Cormier can indeed prove Evans right by defeating the man whom many believe to be the best fighter in MMA. If he can’t, however, will he be forced to retire as ‘Suga’ suggested?

In absolutely non-surprising news, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and his archrival, former champion Jon Jones, got into heated verbal warfare at last week’s UFC: Unstoppable press conference the day before UFC 196 to begin building the buzz of their anticipated rematch at April 23’s UFC 197 from Las Vegas.

The current champ was eager to call Jones out for being fake, his go-to insult for the troubled phenom. Cormier’s basis for the insinuation was a backstage confrontation where Jones allegedly called him ‘the biggest p**** he has ever met’ and told him to ‘suck his d***’ before the presser, which he detailed in an interview with Ariel Helwani this week.

Today a video of the exchange has surfaced online where Jones can indeed be heard saying those things as Cormier goads him on from afar:

Here’s just what the brash and cocky had to say to the champ, whom he feels is falsely holding his title belt:

Jones: ‘You’re the lamest bitch ass I’ve ever met.’

Cormier: ‘Yeah, and what does that make you then?’

Jones: ‘Talking all this shit outside, with bodyguards between us?’

Cormier: ‘Please Jon, when have I ever backed down from a fight with you?’

Jones: ‘Daniel, suck my dick. You got your fuckin’ cheerleading squad with you.’

The anticipated light heavyweight title rematch between champion Daniel Cormier and former champion Jon Jones at April 23’s UFC 197 most likely didn’t need any more hype, but it certainly got just that at yesterday’s (Fri., March 4, 2016) UFC: Unstoppable press conference in Las Vegas.

Following over a year of bad blood leading up to and after their first match-up at UFC 182 in January 2015, which Jones won by unanimous decision, beef was inevitable at the stacked media event, and Cormier got the ball rolling when he was asked if he found it disrespectful that Jones had brought his own belt to the press conference. ‘DC’ responded that he did, but the real dynamic of it was that Jones hadn’t learned anything during his year off due to repeated problems with drugs and alcohol:

“Yeah, I do. I think when you, you know, people, you know, they cheer him. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I think it’s a testament to his mental. It shows how disrespectful to come out here with that belt; it shows that he thinks there are no repercussions for his actions. That’s why he’s up here with that title. If he understood his issues, he would not do that, he would respect what he lost because of his actions outside. But there is no change on that young man; he’s doing the same type of shit. He’s doing the same thing, he will continue.”

JonesCormierStandoff

As the consummate heel, Jones responded that his old feelings towards Cormier didn’t get to him anymore, as his fight with the champ was more about proving that he could rise up from the hit-and-run charges that resulted in him being on probation:

“You know, honestly, they’re not at this point, you know, right now. I’m on a mission to prove to the world that you can get back on your feet after almost anything if you don’t give up on yourself; you know, that its all about continuing to fight. I know in order to prove that, defeating Daniel Cormier is gonna be a big part of that. So, I have no reason to not like him right now, I took his undefeated record, I’m gonna take his belt – I’m gonna take my belt back – and I got no problem with him.”

‘Bones’ painted the picture that he has no animosity towards ‘DC’ whatsoever, but Cormier told an entirely different story in response, noting that Jones actually told him some rather choice words backstage before the show.

That’s when the smack talk picked up in a big way.

Building off the highly palpable buzz of tomorrow night’s (Saturday, March 5, 2016) UFC 196, the world’s biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion will unveil the spring’s biggest fights and events in today’s ‘Unstoppable’ press conference from Las Vegas.

Scheduled to appear are former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and his arch rival, current champion Daniel Cormier, who will once again meet for the belt in the main event of April 23’s UFC 197. After a series of seething social media barbs this week, Jones has stated that the tension will be ‘ramped up’ at the presser after shockingly appearing in UFC content with the belt.

Also set to make an appearance are middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and former champion Chris Weidman, the world’s top two 185-pound fighters who are set to clash again in a rematch at June’s UFC 199. Rockhold battered Weidman in a fourth round TKO to seal the belt at December 2015’s UFC 194.

Say What? Jon Jones Filmed With Light Heavyweight Belt In UFC Content

The mixed martial arts (MMA) world is anxiously awaiting the return of longtime former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who’s set to take on rival Daniel Cormier in the main event of April 23’s UFC 197.

‘Bones,’ the dominant champ who never lost his belt but was stripped of the title and suspended after a hit-and-run accident in April 2015 left a 25-year-old pregnant Albuquerque woman with a broken arm and the embattled fighter with 18 months probation, has since been reinstated to the UFC.

He’s retaken the top spot in the official pound-for-pound rankings, and he”s also rekindled his well-documented war of words with Cormier, the current champ who won the title in his absence after losing a decision to Jones at UFC 182.

Many, if not most, are picking Jones to regain his belt when he rematches Cormier, but if a recent tweet from ‘Bones’ is any indication, the UFC might be getting a bit ahead of themselves.

Last night, Jones posted a video of him holding the belt for UFC content and wrote that the promotion was smart because they ‘know order will be restored shortly.’ Check it out:

Now, many will view this occurrence as a bit of foreshadowing, and indeed you could find it hard to argue with that based on jones’ previous win over Cormier. But after submitting Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 and defending the belt in a war with Alexander Gustafsson in one of the best fights of last year at UFC 192, Cormier is the official champ and will be so until Jones defeats him inside the Octagon whether he and his fans like it or not.

It’s also interesting to see the promotion film Jones with the belt before he’s even won it, because even as the overwhelming favorite, a fight is still a fight and anything can happen. And as we’ve seen recently, supposedly dominant champions can be taken out in shockingly quick fashion.

Jones and Cormier have been trading barbs in the media this week, creating even more hype and attention for a grudge match that doesn’t need it.

Did the UFC get ahead of the curve by filming Jones with his championship already, or were they simply predicting the inevitable future?
