The UFC went through some hectic times last week. The last seven days have featured three fight cards, one major drug test failure, and the changing of hands of two titles. In terms of fights, the week was capped off by the monumental UFC 200 card (July 9, 2016), but the action hasn’t stopped as it was announced earlier today (July 11, 2016) that the promotion had actually been sold for a record setting $4 billion.

Throughout all the chaos, however, the show must go on, and the latest UFC rankings update has been released with some key changes. Most notably, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones, a man many consider to be the greatest fighter of all-time, has lost his spot atop the pound-for-pound list.

Late last week, it was announced that Jones had been flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a possible anti-doping violation. He was then forced out of his scheduled UFC 200 main event bout with Daniel Cormier just days prior. Jones now sits at No. 3 on the list and has been replaced by dominant flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.

Also, former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, who made his return to action after nearly five years away from the Octagon by beating Mark Hunt at UFC 200, has entered the rankings. “The Beast” now sits at No. 8.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel “DC” Cormier had an extremely tough week leading up to last night’s (July 9, 2016) UFC 200 card from Las Vegas, Nevada. Originally scheduled to headline the landmark event opposite his bitter rival Jon Jones, Cormier was thrown into a whirlwind when Jones was notified of a potential anti-doping violation and pulled from the fight just days’ before the event.

With no opponent, Cormier was forced to continue his weight cut in hopes that the UFC would find him a replacement. In the end, former long-time middleweight champion Anderson Silva stepped up on extremely short notice to battle “DC”.

Cormier effectively used his decorated wrestling background to nullify Silva’s elite level striking, and walked away with a decisive decision victory, although his performance wasn’t received too well by the fans. The masses appeared to be upset with Cormier’s constant takedown attempts, and the champion was constantly booed.

In the aftermath of the event, it appears as if it wasn’t only the fans who were unimpressed with the performance. In a Q&A session earlier today (July 10, 2016) with CM Punk, UFC fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone called “DC’s” performance ‘terrible’. “Cowboy” also stirred up some controversy, however, when he used a homophobic slur to describe the performance.

Check out the transcription via Bloody Elbow below:

Cerrone: “What about the worst fight?”

CM Punk: “The worst fight?”

Cerrone: “Your boy, DC. Terrible!”

CM Punk: “What?”

Cerrone“Terrible. How are you going to give up weight and then fight like a f*g, man?”

*applause breaks out in the audience*

CM Punk: “Wait a second. You and everybody else who clapped for that were the same people who were cheering when Brock would take Hunt down, and do the exact same thing DC did to Anderson.”

Cerrone: “That’s different. That was Brock.”

CM Punk: “It’s the same thing!”

Cerrone: “Yeah but Anderson is giving up 30 pounds, flies in, two days notice, fights [Cormier], you’re — f*cking stand and fight, motherf*cker!”

CM Punk: “Hey, I get it! Everybody’s disappointed. They want to see Anderson Silva do some ninja shit. But if I’m standing across from him, I don’t want to see him do ninja shit. I’m gonna take his ass down.”

What do you make of Cerrone’s comments?

The current situation that former undisputed light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones finds himself in was somewhat sealed last night (Friday July 8, 2016). The B sample from his failed drug test conducted on June 16 came back positive, erasing what slim chance ‘Bones’ had of potentially being cleared due to a laboratory error or some other mitigating factor. His removal from the UFC 200 rematch with 205-pound boss Daniel Cormier was somewhat softened by his replacement by Anderson Silva, but the fact remains Jones’ sudden scratching made a big dent on the biggest UFC pay-per-view of all time.

Cormier was distraught, UFC president Dana White was visibly shaken and uncharacteristically lost for words, and the interim champ Jones appeared with tears streaming down his face when addressing the media about the USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) violation. Initial reports are sketchy at best, but White indicated the troubled young ‘Bones’ had popped for multiple banned substances.

Given his past discrepancies and his unchallenged role as the biggest heel in MMA history, Jones has faced some harsh criticism since this saga erupted. Surprisingly Cormier remained reserved in his opinion of ‘Bones’ during this latest tribulation, but one former light-heavyweight champ in Chuck Liddell is not as tactful. ‘The Iceman’ and Jones have exchanged many words in recent months, with Liddell claiming Jones is the ‘Floyd Mayweather of MMA’ and predicting he could knock the younger man out, and in response the 28-year old mocked the ex-champion using his favorite troll tool of Instagram.

Speaking to MMAMania.com on the subject of Jon Jones, the notoriously hard hitting Chuck Liddell verbally swings for the fences:

chuck-liddell-undeniable-joe-buck-video[1]

“Don’t be crying, you know you took something. Really? I mean, ‘Someone slipped it in my drink. It must’ve been one of the supplements I was taking.’ At this level you didn’t check the supplements you were taking and make sure they were cleared? I had my own supplements. I made sure they were cleared. I used to go make sure they were cleared by Nevada State Athletic Commission when I was fighting. I wasn’t taking anything that might jeopardize me getting in trouble for a fight. Crying? You chose to take something. You got caught. Are you crying because you got caught or are you crying because you feel bad? What? I don’t get it. He’s his own worst enemy. He can’t stay out of trouble.”

“I’ve seen quite a few guys down on the lower end that are very self destructive, but just don’t quite make it to where he made it,” he continued. “He made it to the top and imploded. Maybe he just couldn’t handle it. I don’t know. It’s just one of those things. He needs to reevaluate what he wants to do and either decide to start making the right choices and good choices and try to mount a comeback or just let it go and do something else.”

“It’s one of those things, if you are going to do it, if you are going to drug test, you should do it this way,” he said. “You should do whatever you can to catch everyone. You should deter people. If you want to clean up any sport, you need to do it in a way that makes it’s hard to not get caught and if you do get caught you need to punished them severely. You start losing two years and guys will think maybe it’s not worth it. Maybe it’s not worth trying to get that little extra boost or whatever it is you were trying to do. You get guys to actually think about it and make good choices. Think about consequences when you do something.”

So there’s no sympathy on the way from Liddell, but the big questions are which drug(s) Jones popped for, and how USADA and the Nevada Athletic Commission will deal with this case.

To say this has been the wildest week in UFC history would be a gross understatement. There really are few words to describe the madness of the past few days, as UFC fight week is in full swing heading in to the TUF 23 finals and of course UFC 200, but it hasn’t been all good. When news broke that Jon Jones had failed a USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) test on June 16, the main event for this weekend’s historic milestone card fell to pieces. The short notice nature of the announcement, just three days out from the fight itself, made the pill that much harder to swallow.

In the midst of the UFC lightweight title changing hands at UFC Fight Night 90, with Eddie Alvarez sleeping Rafael dos Anjos, we got some lifting news about the UFC 200 card. Former middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva is to face light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier in a non title bout in the absence of ‘Bones.’ UFC 200 is looking amazing once again, but there’s more bad news for the fans of the interim 205-pound boss.

jon-jones-ap[1]

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, a frequently reliable source of inside information regarding UFC pay-per-view buys and insider insights, has reported via Twitter that Jones has been flagged for multiple banned substances. As you’ll read later in the article, this could unfortunately prove incredibly costly for Jon Jones in terms of his suspension.

Melzer reports that Dana White indicated two banned substances being flagged by USADA:

During an impromptu press conference in the heat of the media frenzy yesterday (Thursday Jul7, 2016) Jon Jones addressed reporters about his USADA violation. During an emotional moment ‘Bones’ apologised to the UFC, the fans and Daniel Cormier for his removal from UFC 200. He also indicated that a tainted supplement was the reason for failing the dope screen. After a little bit of digging through the USADA policies for the UFC, this writer has found a number of potentially concerning facts.

Under the new testing standards, if it’s a second offense, or the athlete is discovered to have intentionally taken these substances under ‘aggravating’ circumstances, an additional two years can be added to the ban. As per the official USADA policy:

10.2.3 The period of Ineligibility may be increased up to an additional two years where Aggravating Circumstances are present.

Aggravating Circumstances: Aggravating Circumstances exist where the Anti-Doping Policy Violation was intentional, the Anti-Doping Policy Violation had significant potential to enhance an Athlete’s Bout performance, and one of the following additional factors is present: the Athlete’s or other Person committed the Anti-Doping Policy Violation as part of a doping plan or scheme, either individually or involving a conspiracy or common enterprise to commit an Anti-Doping Policy Violation; the Athlete or other Person Used or Possessed multiple Prohibited Substances or Prohibited Methods or Used or Possessed a Prohibited Substance or Prohibited Method on multiple occasions; the Athlete or Person engaged in deceptive or obstructing conduct to avoid the detection or adjudication of an Anti-Doping Policy Violation.

This indeed could be considered unlikely in light of recent fighters having reduced ineligibility periods following legitimate findings of tainted supplements. That said, if Jones was intentionally doping, it could well signal the start of a very long suspension. If what Jones says is true though, he may actually see action without suspension at all, as discretionary clauses within the USADA policy allow lenience in these types of cases.

As usual we’ll keep you updated here on LowKickMMA, so stay tuned.

Jon Jones Hints Tainted Supplement Was Reason For UFC 200 Withdrawal

With the UFC and the entire MMA community still trying to wrap their collective heads around the devastating news that Jon Jones had been removed from his UFC 200 main event against rival Daniel Cormier due to a potential USADA violation, the troubled former champion appeared in front of fans and media in Las Vegas today (Thurs., July 7, 2016) to address the situation.

First, Jones issued an apology to his UFC and his fans:

“Oh man. I, um, I want to start by apologizing to all the fans, all the fans who came out to support me for UFC 200. Obviously the UFC, the Fertittas, for not being able to perform, and I know there’s been a lot going into this event, all the staff of the UFC. And Daniel Cormier – I want to apologize to Daniel Cormier. I know this fight means a lot to him. The fight meant a lot to me, and the fight’s not happening. I really don’t know what to say. I’m really sorry about this happening.”

From there, his manager Malki Kawa took the mic, noting that the last day was obviously a storm and that they were going to fight the allegations:

“What can I tell you guys is this last 24 hours was a whirlwind. We got the notification from Jeff Novitzky of the UFC that there was a possible flag for some PED violation. We’re here this morning to basically deny that, apologize that this has happened, and go from there. But at this point, we’re not going to get into the details of the notice that we got, simply because we’re going to do what we have to do to fight this.”

Expanding on that, Kawa assured the press that Jones’ B sample was already being tested:

“The B sample’s being tested today.”

death threats

Jones then spoke again, adding that he has never been and is not an advocate of performance-enhancing drugs, and has taken the same supplements throughout his career:

“The whole situation really sucks. It really sucks. It really hurts a lot. You know supposedly they found something in one of my samples I have no clue what it is. I don’t even know how to pronounce it. I’ve been taking the same supplements my whole career. And I’ve been so outspoken about being against any type of performance enhancers; I’m still to this day extremely against performance enhancers. The whole thing sucks because, you know, being labeled as someone who would ever cheat, it just hurts me more than anything else I’ve ever been through in my career. It just sucks, right now I’m kind of like, I don’t really know how I feel about it.”

Kawa took back over again, noting that Jones is still emotional about the whole scenario as they attempt to fight through the necessary steps to clear his already sullied name:

“Obviously it just happened. He’s a little emotional about it; he’s a little distraught about it. It’s not an easy thing for him to swallow. So obviously we’re just going to go step-through-step through the process and take it day-by-day.”

Discussion then shifted to the specifics of Jones’ failure, to which Kawa said he couldn’t go into great detail about. All he could reveal was that the Jones camp felt their fighter would be exonerated by the end of the process:

“From my preliminary understanding of it, absolutely, one hundred percent. So, without saying too much more, you know, I feel like by the time this is all said and done, it’ll be alright.”

From that point of view, it seemed as if Kawa and Jones were insisting that the failure could have been a tainted supplement, something that has seen previously flagged combatant Yoel Romero and Tim Means receive shortened suspensions after initially being tabbed for PEDs.

With details still scarce, Kawa went as far as to suggest that was the case without saying it outright:

“It could be. I don’t want to say much more than that because I gotta go through all the reasonable steps, but it could be.”

The tainted supplement defense seems to be one that nearly every fighter is using as their go-to fallback when flagged for a potential USADA violation, and indeed, in these early days of working out the kinks of the UFC’s new and increased testing partnership, it may in fact be a viable defense.

But with drug-based (performance-enhancing or not) violations seemingly racking up for Jones with no end in sight, he’s going to have to put together quite the argument to find himself cleared of this one.

Disaster struck the UFC 200 fight card set to go down this Saturday July 9, and it was interim light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones causing all the ruckus. It was announced by Jeff Novitsky, the drug testing tsar of the UFC USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) programme, that ‘Bones’ had been flagged for a potential violation. In other words, he got popped during an out of competition test dated June 16 of this year.

The consequential removal of Jones from the unification main event rematch with Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 has cast a dark shadow over the blockbuster pay-per-view in Las Vegas. ‘Bones’ is once again on the wrong side of authorities after only just returning at UFC 197 following his New Mexico hit-and-run circus. Now, on the eve of the biggest fight of his life and bang smack in the middle of the most eventful UFC fight week of all time, the incredibly talented Jon Jones has once again dropped the ball.

Video: The ridiculously awesome 'UFC 182: Jones vs. Cormier ...

At this stage there’s little left for the promotion to do aside from pick up the pieces. Pushing Mark Hunt vs. Brock Lesnar up to the main event was a start, but replacing Jones is both a highly difficult and time sensitive task, but essential to salvage some of the integrity lost. With Michael Bisping, Alexander Gustafsson, Gegard Mousasi and others offering to step in, MMA journalist and FOX analyst Karyn Bryant posted a very intriguing Tweet late last night.

Furthering this trail of thought FOX Sports reported that Cormier himself said he’s willing to beef up to 230 pounds, or thereabouts, for a possible heavyweight replacement:
