Ben Askren offers to make UFC 300 return and snap retirement in rematch with Jorge Masvidal I'll fight him

Following claims from former undisputed welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal that his eight month retirement from combat sports is no more, former opponent, Ben Askren has offered to follow suit and fight the Floridian in a rematch at UFC 300 in April.

Askren, a former undisputed ONE Championship and Bellator MMA champion, called time on his mixed martial arts career back in late 2019, after suffering a submission loss to common-foe and former UFC title challenger, Demian Maia in a main event clash in Singapore.

As for Masvidal, the former two-time welterweight title challenger and inaugural symbolic BMF championship winner, called time on his storied mixed martial arts career back in April, following a fourth consecutive loss in the form of a unanimous decision defeat to former title chaser, Gilbert Burns.

However, just eight months later, Masvidal, over the course of the weekend, claimed he was now “unretired” from combat sports competition, leading to speculation that the Miami native is lining up either a UFC comeback or a professional boxing rematch against former foe, Nate Diaz

Ben Askren suggests UFC 300 return with Jorge Masvidal

And recently offering to make a return against Iowa rival, Askren in a rematch of their UFC 239 clash back in the summer of 2019, Masvidal has again been approached with the idea of a re-run – by Askren himself, who suggested a potential UFC 300 showdown in April.

“I mean, probably because he (Jorge Masvidal) ain’t got no more money,” Ben Askren told Daniel Cormier during a recent interview. “That’s my best guess. People spend it. Mike Tyson spent $400,000,000.”

“Listen, if Dana (White) called me and said, ‘Ben, Jorge Masvidal, UFC 300,’ I don’t give a damn, I’m out of retirement,” Ben Askren continued. “I’ll fight him, I don’t care. I suck at boxing. You guys all saw that. I’m not gonna fight him in boxing. What are you? Dumb?”

Who wins in a future rematch? Ben Askren or Jorge Masvidal?

Jorge Masvidal backed to rematch Nate Diaz in boxing match amid claims he's unretired from the UFC

Former two-time undisputed welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has been backed to take on fellow UFC veteran, Nate Diaz in a professional boxing rematch following last night’s revelation that he was now “unretired” from combat sports, according to professional boxer, Jake Paul – who also staked his claim for a shot at the Floridian.

Masvidal, a former two-time welterweight champion and inaugural symbolic BMF championship winner, called time on his combat sports career just 8 months ago, having suffered his fourth consecutive loss in the form of a one-sided decision shutout to former title chaser, Gilbert Burns in April of this year.

The defeat followed a grudge match loss to former American Top Team training partner and close-friend, Colby Covington, as well as a championship series with Kamaru Usman, which Jorge Masvidal first dropped a decision, and then subsequent rematch knockout loss.

And amid links to a potential comeback against the likes of former foe, Ben Askren, and a BKFC fight with fellow former UFC welterweight contender, Mike Perry, overnight, Masvidal claimed he was “unretired” on his official social media, leading fans to play matchmaker and speculate on his fighting future.

However, as far as the above-mentioned Ohio native, Paul is concerned, Masvidal is set to fight the above-mentioned Stockton veteran, Diaz in a professional boxing rematch – before urging him to score a fight against him, only if UFC CEO, Dana White allows it.

“Yeah, yeah,” Jake Paul replied. “Going to box Nate Diaz, whatever. Come see me when Dana gives you permission.” (H/T TalkSPORT)

Headlining UFC 244 against Diaz back in November 2019 at Madison Square Garden, the then-surging Masvidal landed the inaugural BMF title, landing an eventual third round doctor’s stoppage TKO win over The Ultimate Fighter winner.

Jorge Masvidal confirms he's unretired from MMA sends fans into raptures about UFC return

Former two-time undisputed welterweight champion and symbolic BMF champion, Jorge Masvidal has sent fans into raptures across social media tonight, appearing to call time on his retirement from mixed martial arts competition – claiming tonight he was “unretired” on his social media.

Masvidal, a former two-time welterweight title challenger under the banner of the UFC, has been sidelined from mixed martial arts since he suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to former title challenger, Gilbert Burns back in April, suffering a judging loss on the main card of UFC 287 – which came as his fourth consecutive loss.

The defeat came as the Floridian’s fourth consecutively, following a pair of decision and knockout losses to former champion and pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman in the pair’s two-fight rivalry.

In March of 2022, Masvidal suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to arch-rival and former three-time title challenger, Colby Covington – in a long-anticipated grudge fight between the duo.

And since focusing on his bare knuckle fighting promotion, Gamebred FC, Masvidal has sent fans into raptures tonight, with the American Top Team staple posted “unretired” on his official X account

Without a victory since November 2019, Masvidal’s most recent win came in the form of an inaugural BMF championship win over promotional alum, Nate Diaz at Madison Square Garden, landing a third round doctor’s stoppage TKO win.

Earlier this year, Masvidal, 39, played up the possibility of rematching Ben Askren at UFC 300 in April of next year, after a record-setting 5-second flying-knee KO win over the veteran wrestling ace in 2019 to boot.

Colby Covington doesn’t ‘Think the UFC would sanction’ a rematch with Jorge Masivdal: ‘I beat him every round’

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal

When looking back at the greatest rivalries in UFC history, few have been more personal than the one between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal.

Once the best of friends, the two welterweight icons’ relationship slowly turned sour as they made their way up the 170-pound rankings, culminating in a main-event showdown at UFC 272. That night, Covington came out on top, securing a decisive unanimous decision victory over ‘Gamebred’ in front of a sold-out crowd in Las Vegas.

Many assumed that’s where the rivalry would officially end, but weeks later, Masvidal attacked ‘Chaos’ outside of a Miami steakhouse, fracturing the three-time title challenger’s tooth.

Since then, Masivdal has remained adamant that he would one day settle things with Covington, whether in the Octagon or otherwise. However, ‘Chaos’ has doubts that anyone, particularly the UFC, is interested in running back a bout that ended in a fairly lopsided fashion the first time around.

“I don’t think the UFC would sanction that because they just saw how easily I beat him the first time,” Covington told Tucker Carlson. “I beat him every round convincingly, knocked him down, dragged him out. It was a 50-43 and a soda is what I gave him. So, I don’t think the UFC would give me an easy matchup like that ever again.

“UFC likes to make prestigious and high-level fights,” he continued. “They wouldn’t want to give me some amateur that’s not on my level.”

While ‘Gamebred’ ultimately laid down his gloves following a loss against Gilbert Burns in April. Colby Covington returned after a 21-month absence to challenge Leon Edwards for the welterweight title at the promotion’s final event of 2023. Despite talking a fairly big game in the months leading up to the contest, ‘Chaos’ failed to deliver, offering very little offense en route to a loss on all three judge’s scorecards.

Colby Covington Shares His Side of the Story

Who’s to blame for the falling out between Covington and Masvidal will vary depending on which side you’re speaking to. Regardless, it’s always sad to see two good friends allow their relationship to crumble under the weight of fame and fortune.

“We were best friends for eight years,” Covington said. “We lived together for three years. Best, best friends, but that’s what this sport does to people. People will sell out their friends for money. All he wanted was fame and money so as soon as I started reaching up and getting high in this sport, that’s when he took it personal and his ego kicked in.

“He was like, ‘Hey, man. We can’t be friends. I want money more than I want to be friends with you,’” he concluded (h/t MMA Mania).

Colby Covington reflects on Jorge Masvidal win I can't believe how much UFC paid me to beat up that bum

Former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington claims he is still dumbfounded by the UFC’s decision to pay his an apparently lucrative payday in his victory over former two-time title chaser, Jorge Masvidal back in March of last year – describing his long-time rival as a “backstabbing bum”.

Covington, who headlined UFC 296 over the course of last weekend, suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to incumbent undisputed champion, Leon Edwards in the pair’s championship fight.

The one-sided loss came as Covington’s third in an undisputed title fight, following a pair of defeats to former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman.

Prior to his return over the course of last weekend, outspoken Clovis native, Covington recorded a decision shutout victory over former American Top Team stablemate, Masvidal, turning in a dominant win over the Floridian.

And reflecting on his decision success in the immediate aftermath of his loss to Birmingham technician, Edwards, Covington claimed he earned a massive payday in his most recent success.

“I beat him (Jorge Masvidal) up,” Colby Covington said on the PBD podcast. “I gave him the 50-43 with a soda. It was the easiest fight of my career. I can’t believe what they [the UFC] paid me to beat that backstabbing bum up. He’s a backstabber. He’s a guy that as soon as I started rising up in the ranks, that’s when it was an issue.”

“That’s when his ego came in,” Colby Covington explained. “He’s like, No, f*ck you, Colby. I’d fight my mom for money, so I’m for sure gonna fight you. We’re gonna fight one day.’ He just started throwing me under the bus for no reason.”
