Ben Askren could have very well gotten a title shot next as all he had to do was beat Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239.

Yet, that was not the case as “Funky” was knocked out in just five seconds by a flying knee. Since the loss, however, Askren has taken it extremely well as he has joked about it in interviews and on social media. Following UFC Newark where Colby Covington beat Robbie Lawler, he decided to apologize.

“I want to apologize for losing bc now all of you have to listen to Marty and Colby talk to each other. It will be damn near unbearable,” Askren wrote.

Of course, since “Chaos” won all signs point to him taking on Kamaru Usman later this year. The two do not like each other as evident by the post-fight show and have even been trash-talking each other for a long time before even Usman became the champ.

For Askren, he wishes that would never happen and instead be him in there getting ‘Marty from Nebraska’ going. Yet, that is not what happened, so the UFC will most likely book Colby Covington vs. Kamaru Usman next.

What do you make of Ben Askren’s apology?

Colby Covington can solidify himself as the next challenger for the UFC welterweight title tonight (Sat. August 3, 2019).

He’ll need to get past former American Top Team (ATT) teammate Robbie Lawler. However, one man also sitting atop the division is Covington’s teammate and best friend Jorge Masvidal. Masvidal is on a two-fight knockout streak over names such as Ben Askren and Darren Till.

It’s possible Masvidal and Covington meet inside the Octagon at one point. If that were to happen, “Chaos” tells MMA Fighting he has no issue training with “Gamebred” before the fight, but is sure his friend’s “scum” management will advise him otherwise.

“Honestly, I could definitely train with him the whole training camp and help him and just to get ready for me,” Covington said. “I’ll show him my wrestling, he knows all my stuff and I know all his stuff.

“I wouldn’t have a problem with it but I think him and his management, the Kawa’s, the scum Kawa brothers [Malki and Abraham] would have a problem with it. Those guys are the shadiest in the business and they’ve tried to turn him against me.”

Things could get interesting in regards to a build-up between Covington and Masvidal. If things were to get personal, Covington welcomes the trash-talk, but hopes the bad blood isn’t permanent once the fighting is done.

“I wouldn’t have a problem with it but I think he would have a problem with it. He needs to make fights personal to go out there and if he needs to make this personal just for one fight and we do business then we become friends the next day, I understand that because this is the fight business.”

What do you think about Covington taking a shot at Masvidal’s representation?

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal are no longer training with one another, as the American Top Team (ATT) teammates are currently both in the top five of the UFC welterweight rankings.

Covington will be taking on Robbie Lawler this weekend at UFC Newark. Should he win, he’s likely next in line for a title shot. However, Masvidal is coming off of two back-to-back vicious knockout wins and is in the title conversation as well. Speaking to MMA Junkie recently, Covington said he doesn’t think his friend and training partner has earned a title opportunity.

“Chaos” called Masvidal a “50-50 fighter,” and said he doesn’t think a Masvidal title shot makes sense.

“Look at his resume; look at mine. He’s on a two-fight win streak,” Covington said. “He’s 2-2 in his last four fights, so you’re going to give a 50-50 fighter a title shot? That doesn’t really make a lot of sense.”

The former interim welterweight champion is still good friends with Masvidal but believes the pecking order between the two is clear. He is Batman, and Masvidal is his Robin.

“We are one of the greatest duos in MMA history,” Covington said. “We’re the Batman and Robin of MMA right now. Of course, I’m Batman, and he’s Robin, but it’s a dynamic duo, and we’re doing great things in the sport. But he’s going to sit back while I get my undisputed title shot.”

What do you think about Covington calling Masvidal a “50-50 fighter?”
