Ben Askren is no longer undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

“Funky” was the victim of the fastest knockout loss in UFC history against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239 in early July. Askren was caught with a flying knee shooting in on a takedown attempt. He has handled the defeat with class and was asked about how he’s feeling about the loss a month removed from the fight.

Speaking on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” today (Mon. August 5, 2019), Askren admitted he “f*cked up” his life’s dream with the loss.

“I just told you, Ariel, I try not to think about the fact that I f*cked up my life’s dream,” Askren said. “I mean, think about this, for nine years I’m trying to prove I’m the best fighter in the world. I am so close to doing that, so close, and I let stupid Jorge Masvidal knee me in the head. I haven’t been knocked down in 19 fights.

“I didn’t get knocked down one time. And then I let this idiot knee me in the head and get knocked out. And now I don’t get to chase the dream that I had, I mean everything was working out so perfectly. I have accepted the fact that I blew it, but I try not to dwell on that fact. I try to move on. The rest of my life is great. Everything is going well.”

Now, Askren hopes to bounce back with a victory over a veteran in Demian Maia. The pair agreed to fight on social media recently, and Askren teased an official bout announcement could be coming very soon.

What do you think about Askren saying he crushed his life’s dream by losing to Jorge Masvidal?

Jorge Masvidal will only accept two fights for his Octagon return. Those being either a title opportunity against Kamaru Usman, or a bout against Conor McGregor.

Neither of those contests seem likely, as Colby Covington has emerged as the favorite to fight Usman next, and Dana White is not a fan of the McGregor matchup. Even if Covington were out of the title picture, however, two-time 170-pound title challenger, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, tells MMA Fighting he believes there are plenty of more deserving fighters of a title opportunity than Masvidal. (via BJPenn.com)

“Leon Edwards is on an 8 fight winning streak, wow,” Thompson said. “So he could possibly be fighting for the title. I know everyone’s talking Masvidal, but he’s had two wins and his third loss was me at MSG. I think there are other people more deserving of the title, but he’s put on some good shows and knocked out some good people so you never know.”

As far as the pecking order for the welterweight division goes according to Thompson, he’d put Masvidal rival Leon Edwards above “Gamebred.”

“He’s doing very well in the division (Edwards), so I think at the top, maybe him,” said Thompson. “I think under him, maybe Masvidal. He’s got some great knockout, but it really depends what the UFC and fans want.

“And the UFC is going towards what the fans want nowadays, so it could be Masvidal but I think Leon Edwards has definitely proven he deserves a shot at the title.”

Do you agree with Thompson that there are more deserving fighters of a title shot than Masvidal?

Ben Askren could have very well gotten a title shot next as all he had to do was beat Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239.

Yet, that was not the case as “Funky” was knocked out in just five seconds by a flying knee. Since the loss, however, Askren has taken it extremely well as he has joked about it in interviews and on social media. Following UFC Newark where Colby Covington beat Robbie Lawler, he decided to apologize.

“I want to apologize for losing bc now all of you have to listen to Marty and Colby talk to each other. It will be damn near unbearable,” Askren wrote.

Of course, since “Chaos” won all signs point to him taking on Kamaru Usman later this year. The two do not like each other as evident by the post-fight show and have even been trash-talking each other for a long time before even Usman became the champ.

For Askren, he wishes that would never happen and instead be him in there getting ‘Marty from Nebraska’ going. Yet, that is not what happened, so the UFC will most likely book Colby Covington vs. Kamaru Usman next.

What do you make of Ben Askren’s apology?
