Don’t expect to see Chael Sonnen walking the streets of Miami this weekend without some muscle to back him up.

Though ‘The American Gangster’ hardly needs protection, that’s exactly what he’s been saddled with after Jorge Masvidal made multiple threats of physical violence against the West Linn, Oregon native.

Chael would be one guy that I would love to break his eye orbital,” Masvidal said during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. “Just because he’s such a cheating f*ck. Like he’s gotten caught with more substances in his body than any other competitor in the history. At one time he had like six or seven different substances in his body for one of his title fights. It’s like you’re a f*cking piece of sh*t human being.”

It was the second time that we’ve seen ‘Gamebred’ spit venom at the three-time UFC title challenger, the first occurring in November when Masvidal slammed Sonnen during a profanity-laced rant despite there being no prior enmity between the two.

Chael Sonnen reveals threats from Jorge Masvidal

With both men expected to be in attendance at the Kaseya Center for UFC 299 on Saturday night, Sonnen revealed in a YouTube video that he was being held at an undisclosed location with guards at his door to prevent any potential shenanigans from the former BMF titleholder.

I am at a separate location from everybody else with two security guards because I have been threatened by Jorge Masvidal,” Sonnen said. “I gotta tell you, I went into the tough guy business very early so that I would never have to worry about the very situation that I find myself in right now. There’s guys out there that I would have to worry about, but there are extremely few and I’m never going to run into one of them outside of a cage because no man would be that foolish. Yet here I am with two guys who will not allow me to leave my room.”

As silly as all of this sounds, we need to remember that Masvidal does have a history of sneak-attacking fighters in the street. Weeks removed from his March 2022 clash with bitter rival Colby Covington at UFC 272, ‘Gamebred’ notoriously ran up on Covington outside of a Miami steakhouse and sucker punched him, chipping his tooth in the process. Masvidal pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge and was ultimately sentenced to time served and court costs.

Three years prior, Masvidal was involved in the infamous “three-piece and a soda” incident with Leon Edwards following a Fight Night event at the O2 Arena in London. And this weekend, Sonnen is poised to feature in the same arena as the former — as he takes on desk duty for ESPN at UFC 299.

“I don’t think Jorge Masvial would do anything, but I’m not certain. I’m not positive. There’s a part of me that also knows he would. He’s done it before, but I don’t fully know how we got here. I know why I am not happy with Masvidal. Because he went on Ariel’s show and said that he was not happy with me. I know why I’m bothered by Mavidal, but I don’t know why he’s bothered with me.

“It’s a very hard thing to imagine. Could you imagine not liking Chael? I’m a charming guy. Charismatic. Loyalty, honor, respect. You could apply all of those things to me and Masvidal finds that the Chael charm is not quite as powerful as some. Therefore, I sit before you in a secluded room with my own pool and hot tub.”

Chael Sonnen hints at run-in with Jorge Masvidal at UFC 299 I'll be in a suit he'll be a thug with a hood up

Following an unexpected call out from former title challenger, Jorge Masvidal to his fellow UFC alum, Chael Sonnen earlier this week, the Oregon native has hinted a potential coming together with the Floridian next weekend at UFC 299 – issuing his own barb to boot.

Sonnen, a former undisputed middleweight and light heavyweight championship challenger under the banner of the UFC, called time on his combat sports career back in 2019, following a summer knockout loss to former UFC light heavyweight kingpin, Lyoto Machida with the pair competing under the Bellator MMA banner.

And receiving a stark call out from Miami veteran, Masvidal this week, Sonnen was offered the chance to meet the former welterweight title chaser inside the boxing ring – with the former eyeing a move to the squared circle later this annum.

“I can’t stand that lesbian-looking transitional b*tch, Chael Sonnen,” Jorge Masvidal said. “And no offence to lesbians because there’s some hot, cool-ass lesbians out there, it’s just him with them glasses and that haircut – he just, he looks like he’s in transition.”

“I would love to bust up Chael, but he would never get into a boxing ring with me,” Jorge Masvidal explained. “…Chael would be one guy that I would love to f*cking break his eye orbital. Just because he’s a cheating f*ck. Like, if you – he’s gotten caught with more substances in his body, than any other competitor in the history. At one time, he had six or seven different substances in his body for one of his title fights. It’s like, you’re a f*cking piece of sh*t human being. …Do all the steroids you want, it don’t matter, I’m still gonna break your eye orbital, bro.”

Chael Sonnen responds to Jorge Masvidal in brutal fashion

However, issuing his own response to Masvidal, Sonnen hinted at a potential run-in with the former at UFC 299 next weekend at the Kaseya Center in Miami – before mocking the former’s appearance and apparent dress sense.

“I will not let him get close,” Chael Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “I cannot trust Jorge Masvidal. Jorge Masvidal will be in Miami next week, where I will be. I will be the person in the nice trimmed suit. I assume he will be the thug with a up. …”

Former UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal continues the campaign in an attempt to lock in a Nate Diaz boxing match.

Now 10 months on from his retirement from MMA, Masvidal is now determined to get into the boxing match. There had been an announcement from Happy Punch that the 39-year-old would be boxing Nate Diaz on their platform, but it now appears nothing has been made official.

Jorge Masvidal eyes Nate Diaz rematch this year

Now it seems that Jorge Masvidal is willing to hurl some trash talk Nate Diaz’s way in order to reel in the Stockton native.

“I was out in Cali for a couple days and I was like, you know what, let me stop by Stockton,” Masvidal said during an interview with MMA Fighting. “I’ve never been there, I heard the tacos are good there, maybe I’ll run into Nate and we can make this fight happen. So I was like yeah, let’s go over there. Took the squad over there, wrote down my number on a piece of paper, started handing it out to people who looked like they might know Nate Diaz. I’m at the butcher shop and he was like, ‘I know Nate well!’ I was like, that’s funny because he’s vegan. But whatever, I’m looking for beef, so you just let me know how to find this motherf******.

“I heard Nate’s not that good with the technology. Neither am I, so f*** it, maybe we’ll just do this old-school style. Just meet up on the face to face and make this s*** happen.”

Diaz made his boxing debut against Jake Paul last August, losing a one-sided decision and while never the easiest to read, seems keen on continuing to fight.

Masvidal on the other hand seems very desperate to box after the recent explosion in crossover boxing events.

Targeting a professional boxing debut later this year amid links to a return to combat sports, UFC veteran, Jorge Masvidal claims multiple offers have been floated toward former Octagon title challenger, Chael Sonnen – who he vowed to viciously beat if they ever share the squared circle.

Masvidal, a former two-time welterweight title challenger, called time on his professional mixed martial arts career back in April of last year in his native Miami, suffering his fourth consecutive loss.

Book-ending his career with a decision defeat to fellow former title challenger, Gilbert Burns, Floridian veteran, Masvidal has been linked with a return to combat sports in the form of a boxing match against fellow UFC alum, Nate Diaz, however, despite rumblings of a pairing as soon as next month, a re-run failed to come to fruition.

Jorge Masvidal takes aim at Chael Sonnen

And while the Gamebred Fighting Championships leader still intends to fight former BMF championship rival, Diaz a second time in their storied careers, he revealed that a clash with the above-mentioned ex-fighter-turned-analyst, Sonnen is a bout he covets.

“I can’t stand that lesbian-looking transitional b*tch, Chael Sonnen,” Jorge Masvidal told MMA Fighting. “And no offence to lesbians because there’s some hot, cool-ass lesbians out there, it’s just him with them glasses and that haircut – he just, he looks like he’s in transition.”
