The UFC 136 weigh-ins took place on Friday, October 7 and all fighters were on weight.
The fight card will take place on Saturday, October 8 from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and will be headlined by two UFC title bouts. The co-main event will feature Jose Aldo putting his UFC featherweight title on the line against Kenny Florian, while the main event will see lightweight champion Frankie Edgar meet up with Gray Maynard.

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard: Edgar has one professional loss and that loss is to Maynard. Edgar was absolutely dominated by Maynard in the first round of their bout at UFC 125. I think Maynard took more away from that fight than Edgar did as far as knowing what he needs to correct to come back and get the victory. I’ll look for Maynard to use his strength to do more of what he did in the first round of the UFC 125 bout, wrestling and ground and pound will earn the win for Maynard. Maynard by unanimous decision
Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian: Florian gets credit for doing whatever he has to do to get a shot at any UFC title, but the featherweight title is not going to leave Houston with him. Florian has predicted that he will leave the cage bloody on Saturday and I do believe he is correct in that assumption, as he cannot match the striking prowess of the champ. – Aldo by TKO in the Third Round.
Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann: Stann has claimed he has the strength to knock out Chael Sonnen. He has also claimed that Sonnen does not offer him anything he hasn’t seen before and while both of those things are true, seeing what Sonnen brings and experiencing it are two different things. Sonnen has great wrestling skills and if he can get Stann to the ground he can control him and grind out the win. – Sonnen by unanimous decision.
Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon: After struggling with consistency Guillard looks like he has finally pulled everything together into a pretty solid package, winning eight of his last nine, with the last two of those coming via KO and TKO. Lauzon is 10-3 in his last 13, so he’s no slouch, as his five straight Fight Night Bonuses can attest. My feeling is that Guillard’s striking will prove to be too much for Lauzon. – Guillard by second round TKO
Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan: The last time these two fought some said that the decision that went Garcia’s way was one of the worst in UFC history. It’s no secret that Garcia likes to come in and just swing away and that crazy style gets him points. That style is no secret to Phan at this point so I think he exploits that and moves in as Garcia leaves himself open, earning the win by using Garcia’s aggression against him. Phan by unanimous decision.

In the co-main event of the evening, the featherweight title will be on the line, as champion Jose Aldo will look to defend his belt against longtime lightweight contender Kenny Florian.

Mixed martial arts fans are in for a treat on Saturday night, with a fight card on tap for UFC 135: Edgar vs. Maynard III that is as deep as any we’ve seen this year and, as such, has as much potential for heart-pounding, bone-crushing entertainment as any UFC event in 2011.
First and foremost, we have the main event between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. These two nemeses have enough history between them that this bout could be a headliner even without the benefit of waist wear.
Of course, they’ll be duking it out for the UFC Lightweight Championship, so the stakes will be that much higher. This isn’t the first time they’ve met to decide a title, though. Edgar and Maynard last met in the Octagon at UFC 125: Resolution on New Year’s Day.
Ironically enough, not all was resolved that day, particularly between Edgar and Maynard, who fought to a draw. That allowed Edgar to retain the title but did little to make up for his loss to Maynard at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Lauzon back in April of 2008.
As exciting as the latest edition of Edgar vs. Maynard will be, it won’t be the only fight with championship implications this weekend. Jose Aldo will also be at the Toyota Center in Houston, but certainly not as a spectator. Rather, he’ll be climbing into the Octagon, Featherweight Championship and all, to take on former lightweight contender Kenny Florian.
Aldo has been as dominant as any fighter in his respective division, though this will mark only his second career UFC bout. Florian, meanwhile, will be taking his third, and perhaps final, shot at a title after twice losing championship bouts as a lightweight.
But wait…there’s more! The third fight on the main card, between top 10 contenders Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann, could very well determine who gets the next crack at Anderson Silva‘s seemingly unbreakable hold on the Middleweight Championship.
Sonnen last climbed into the Octagon 14 months ago, when Silva forced him into submission to claim the title belt at UFC 117. Sonnen would’ve had a shot at an immediate rematch had he not been suspended for elevated levels of testosterone and mixed up in a money laundering scandal.
Sonnen has been rather flippant in his approach toward tomorrow’s bout, telling USA Today:
“This is the most unsophisticated and un-well-thought-out thing you need to do in life. Two half-naked men are going to get into a steel cage and fight for the applause of a drunken, rowdy crowd. … We don’t need to plan for this.”
But while Sonnen may not be so inclined to planning ahead, MMA fans should be, at least in so far as making sure they catch all the championship-caliber action at UFC 136.
