A middleweight scrap took place on the main card of UFC Fight Night 91. The competitors were Tim Boetsch (19-10) and Josh Samman (12-4).

A head scratching strategy with some corner dissension doomed Samman.

Samman caught the kick of Boetsch and went for a body lock. “Anqa” pushed his opponent against the fence and landed a knee to the body. “The Barbarian” took Samman down and landed a right hand on the ground. Samman returned to his feet and landed a knee. “Anqa” kicked the leg of Boetsch and went for the back. Samman’s corner called for him to slow his pace down. Boetsch pushed his opponent off and landed a leg kick. A head kick from Samman pushed Boetsch towards the cage.

Boetsch pressed forward at the start of round two and ended with a body kick. Samman went for his own body kick, but it was caught and he was taken down. “The Barbarian” stood up and dropped some heavy punches. Boetsch looked to crank the arm of Samman. He then dropped some heavy ground and pound in back mount and referee “Big” John McCarthy had seen enough.

Commentators Jon Anik and Kenny Florian expressed their surprise in Samman’s decision to grapple with Boetsch, who is known for tossing his opponents with ease. The frantic pace of the first round certainly didn’t do “Anqa” any favors either, who left Sioux Falls with a loss and a hematoma over his eye.

Final Result: Tim Boetsch def. Josh Samman via TKO (Strikes) – R2, 3:49

UFC Fight Night 91 “People’s Main Event” Features Tim Boetsch, Josh Samman (Editorial)

In all honest, the real “People’s Main Event” for UFC Fight Night 91 was removed when Michael Chiesa bowed out with an injury.

Chiesa vs. Tony Ferguson in a meeting of former Ultimate Fighter winners and lightweight contenders was a sure-fire “Fight of the Year” candidate.

Now, we must look down the main card for another worthy contender for the “PME.”

And we got a good one, folks.

If you aren’t completely burnt out after International Fight Week, make sure you do not miss Wednesday night’s Tim Boetsch-Josh Samman contest.

This is your typical veteran vs. top prospect.

Boetsch (18-10) finds himself in a must-win situation after three consecutive losses to Ed Herman, Dan Henderson and Thales Leites. The two most recent ones have been knockouts, including a 28-second finish vs. Henderson.

But the 35-year-old is never in boring fights and is just a few years removed from a series of wins over the likes of Hector Lombard and Yushin Okami that had him talking about the title. In fact, Boetsch actually faced off against former champion Luke Rockhold in 2014.

Samman (12-3) had his four-fight win streak snapped by Tamdan McCrory last December when he was caught with a triangle choke in the third round. The former Ultimate Fighter competitor had scored back-to-back-to-back finishes vs. Caio Magalhaes, Eddie Gordon and Kevin Casey to begin his UFC run.

The 28-year-old Floridan is a finisher, as he owns 11 career knockout or submission wins to his credit, while two of his three defeats have also come early. Both wins over Gordon and Magalhaes earned him “Performance of the Night” honors.

The Octagon will head to South Dakota for the first time later this year with UFC Fight Night 91.

Recently, the promotion announced the first three bouts for the event, which takes place July 13 from the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.

Kyle Noke meets Keita Nakamura at welterweight, while Scott Holtzman takes on Cody Pfister and Tim Boetsch battles Josh Samman.

Noke (22-8-1) has gone 6-4 over 10 Octagon appearances, including a 3-1 record he put together at one point. Nakamura (31-7-2) is just 1-4 with the promotion.

Boetsch (18-10) is in need of a win over three straight losses dropped his UFC record to 9-9. Samman (12-3) had his three-fight win streak snapped by Tamdan McCrory in December.

Holtzman (8-1) suffered his first career defeat at the hands of Drew Dober in January, while Pfister (12-5-1) is coming off a loss to Sage Northcutt in late 2015.

UFC 181 Video Highlights: Josh Samman’s Devastating KO of Eddie Gordon, Urijah Faber’s Eye-Poke Submission of Francisco Rivera…Oh, And the Title Fights Too

FOX Sports released some highlight videos from Saturday’s UFC 181: Hendricks vs. Lawler 2 event, and as usual, the clips from the main card fights are woefully incomplete, showing everything but the actual finishes. So eff ’em — we’ve buried those after the jump. Luckily, the highlight clips from the FOX Sports 1 prelim fights actually showed the money shots.

The video above shows Josh Samman‘s devastating second-round head-kick knockout of TUF 19 winner Eddie Gordon. It was an incredibly cathartic moment for Samman — coming after an extended injury layoff and the car accident death of his girlfriend — and also earned him a $50,000 Performance of the Night check.

Below, Urijah Faber picks up yet another submission victory in a non-title fight, though this one came with some controversy. In the slow-motion replay at the 0:30 mark, you can see Faber basically fish-hook Francisco Rivera’s eye-socket. (Two fouls in one!) Rivera goes down in agony, and Faber bulldog chokes him. But referee Mario Yamasaki didn’t see the foul, and it goes down as a legitimate win for Faber. Rivera plans to appeal the result.

After the jump: Highlights from four UFC 181 main card fights. They left out Todd Duffee‘s KO of Anthony Hamilton because the fight was so short they’d pretty much have to show the finish, and God knows we can’t have that.

UFC on Fox 11 Booking Roundup: Thiago Alves Returns, Jordan Mein & Josh Samman Face Little Known Brazilians

(Alves and Martin Kampmann trade fisticuffs during their epic battle at UFC on FX 2. Photo via Getty.)

After nearly two years away from the game, Thiago Alves finally has his next fight booked. The one-time welterweight title challenger has been out of action since suffering a last-second submission loss to Martin Kampmann in their headlining bout at UFC on FX 2, subsequently pulling out of fights with Siyar Bahadurzada and Matt Brown at UFC 149 and Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen, respectively.

However, it was revealed last month that Alves was finally healthy again and hoping to return at UFC 171 in March. Yesterday, word was passed along that Alves will actually be returning in April when he faces TUF 11 standout Seth Baczynski at UFC on FOX 11.

Baczynski has a had a rough run of things since putting together a six-fight win streak between 2010 and early 2012. “The Polish Pistola” was decisioned by Mike Pierce at UFC on FX 6 before getting KO’d by the now-retired Brian Melancon in the last second of the first round at UFC 162, and only recently returned to the win column with a unanimous decision over Neil Magny at Fight for the Troops 3 last November.

Also booked for UFC on FOX 11…

Speaking of hype trains that came to a sudden halt, Jordan “Young Guns” Mein was flying high after becoming the only man to ever stop Dan Miller inside the distance (in the first round, no less) in his promotional debut at UFC 158. Unfortunately, the Strikeforce vet was paired with the beast that is Matt Brown in his next contest and saw his three-fight win streak broken via a hellstorm of elbows. Said Evangelista Santos while watching the fight from his couch, “Good, now he knows how it feels.”

In any case, Mein will also attempt to get back in the win column at UFC on FOX 11 when he faces Santiago “El Rasta” Ponzinibbio, an 18-2 TUF Brazil 2 alum who dropped a decision in his promotional debut against Ryan LaFlare at Fight Night 32. I have no clue who this Ponzinibbio fella is, but he did just remind me of how versatile and excellent ponzu sauce is, so perhaps the beatdown he will inevitably at the hands of Mein will not be completely in vain. Little victories, Nation.

Finally, TUF 17 vet Josh Samman will face Caio Magalhaes on the FOX 11 undercard as well. Please try and contain yourselves.

UFC on FOX 11 goes down on April 19th from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

Nick Ring Pulls Out of August Fight With Uriah Hall, Probably After Watching That Spin-Kick Video

(“mumblegumblemurglegurgle…anyway, you do that for like 10 minutes and usually the guy cums.” / Screen-cap via FuelTV)

About a month ago, we reported that TUF 17 finalist Uriah Hall would face Canadian middleweight Nick Ring at UFC on FOX Sports 1 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen (August 17th, Boston). On Friday, we posted a video of Hall using one of his infamous spinning back-kicks to drop a training partner who had the audacity to kick him in the head. Today, we learned that Ring has withdrawn from his fight against Hall under mysterious circumstances. Coincidence?? Yeah, it’s probably a coincidence.

Though details are sketchy at this time, MMAJunkie reports that Ring has been forced out of his scheduled match against Hall, and will be replaced by Josh Samman — a fellow TUF 17 vet who was eliminated by Kelvin Gastelum in the show’s semi-finals, but returned at the TUF 17 Finale to score a second-round TKO against Kevin Casey. So it’s like Hall and Samman never left the show, and are now competing for the TUF 17 bronze medal, while Dylan Andrews sits in the corner shouting “what about meeeeeeeee?!?

The current lineup of ‘UFC on FOX Sports 1 1’ is after the jump…
