The polarizing YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul is moving on from the idea of a Tommy Fury fight as he turns his attention to Julio César Chávez Jr.

There had been reports of Paul being interested in fighting Chávez Jr. since days after his Tyron Woodley rematch, and Chávez Jr. has also discussed the potential bout. Paul was originally supposed to face Tommy Fury instead of Woodley, but Fury pulled out of the fight roughly two weeks prior to the event.

During a recent interview on the Boxing with Chris Mannix podcast, Paul confirmed his interest in a possible matchup with Chávez Jr. for his next challenge in the ring instead of rescheduling the Fury Fight.

“It’s interesting. I like that fight a lot, because it silences the critics,” Paul said.

“He was a former world champion, and I know I could beat him. And you look at his record, it’s like 50 wins or something, and I don’t even know the losses, but it’s a good record. So that challenge excites me and I’m down.

“And this is what people don’t understand is that, even after I knocked out Woodley, they were all like, ‘Fight a real boxer.’

“I’m like, ‘You guys, I tried, and he dropped out of the fight two weeks before.’ So I want to fight a real boxer, newsflash, and I’m going to. Just have some f*cking patience.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Jake Paul Has Hinted At Taking Time Off From Boxing

Despite speculation running rampant regarding Paul’s next fight, he has alluded to taking some time off from the ring after a busy 2021. Paul earned a vicious knockout over Ben Askren before back-to-back wins over Woodley.

Paul first hinted at taking time off from the ring after his split-decision win over Woodley last August. However, his interest in fighting Chavez Jr. may lure him back to the fight game sooner than expected.

Paul has remained active in the gym and on social media, as shown in recent footage of him practicing leg kicks in a teased move to MMA. Fans and critics of Paul have called for him to face a true boxer over the past year, and it sounds like it could be close to happening.

César Chávez Jr. Says He Would Retire, Reject Fight Purse If He Lost To Paul

César Chávez Jr. was recently asked his thoughts on a fight against Paul. This comes after Paul’s management claimed he asked for a bout against the prizefighter.

The experienced boxer set harsh penalties for himself if he were to lose but also mentioned his expectation to defeat the celebrity-turned-boxer.

“I hope I can get a few million with Jake Paul. If he beats me, I’ll retire, I don’t get paid. I don’t want money if I don’t beat him,” said César Chávez Jr. in an interview with TV Boxeo. “Retirement – not interested in his money if I do not win.” (h/t DAZN).

César Chávez Jr. sees a fight against Paul as something that could be lucrative and successful for him. While acknowledging the viral success that Jake and his brother Logan have generated, he doesn’t see Paul’s fighting style as a problem for him.

“[The Pauls] generate a lot of expectations and money, a match with me would be good. They haven’t learned how to fight well and I can take advantage of that. Jake Paul can punch, but he’s not a boxer,” he said.

César Chávez Jr. was a successful boxer for nearly an entire decade, although he has struggled in recent years. The 35-year-old has lost three of his last five fights, including a bout against former UFC Champion Anderson Silva in June.

César Chávez Jr. returned to the win column earlier this month, scoring a unanimous decision win over David Zegarra in Mexico.

Paul, still undefeated, is also coming off a win. He scored a highlight-reel knockout earlier this month, knocking out former UFC fighter Tyron Woodley over a week ago.

Jake Paul has asked to fight a boxer not named Tommy Fury next: second-generation veteran Julio César Chávez Jr. The news comes courtesy of Paul’s management team.

Paul is always searching for the next co-star to his next pay-per-view venture. Typically, and almost exclusively, those targets are mixed-martial-artists, as evident by his three most recent wins over Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley (2).

Now, instead of unrealistic callouts of someone like Canelo Álvarez, Paul is eying Chávez Jr. as his next opponent.

“It shows how impressive Jake is that people think this should be his next opponent. Even more impressive is that Jake messaged @Nakisabidarian and said let’s get this one next,” the Instagram Story of BAVAFA Sports read.

Tagged in the story is Nakisa Bidarian, the founder of BAVAFA Sports management.

Julio César Chávez Jr. is the son of legendary boxing Hall of Famer Julio César Chávez Sr. Chávez Jr. is a multi-time WBC champion with a professional record of 53-6. Many MMA fans may best know him as the man Anderson Silva defeated in a stunning upset earlier this year.

As it happens, Silva has expressed interest in doing business with the Paul brothers in the past. In fact, UFC President and arch-nemesis of Jake Paul, Dana White, has also co-signed this matchup. For Paul’s part, he hadn’t ruled the idea out but was less than enthused due to Silva’s age (46) being a possible discrediting factor should he emerge victoriously.

Age aside, there’s no denying that Silva looked very impressive in his first boxing match since 2005 against Chávez Jr. Silva would then follow up that performance by making short work of fellow MMA legend Tito Ortiz in September.

Given the glaring fact that Chávez Jr. is a common opponent to Paul and Silva and the fact that a Paul/Silva matchup has been called for by a sizable number of fans, this could all be Paul’s way of setting a potential trap for “The Spider,” one that the UFC legend would gladly glide right into.

Anderson Silva Describes Doing The “Impossible” Against Chávez Jr.

Former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva has revealed how he defied the odds to defeat Julio César Chávez Jr. in a boxing match earlier this year.

Silva returned to the ring for the first time since 2005 in June after his UFC release. The Brazilian, who is widely regarded as the greatest of all time in MMA, ruled the promotion’s middleweight division from 2006 to 2013. In that time, he defended the title 10 times, secured the longest title reign, the longest win streak, and the most title-fight finishes in UFC history.

After being dethroned by Chris Weidman, Silva went 1-6-1 in his next eight outings. A main event loss to Uriah Hall last October signaled the end of an illustrious career on MMA’s biggest stage. Despite that, Silva’s journey in combat sports wasn’t over. “The Spider” ventured to the squared circle this year, a location he boasted a 1-1 record in at the time.

“The Spider” was matched up with a former boxing world champion 10 years his younger in Julio César Chávez Jr. Despite many expecting Silva’s poor form to continue in the ring, the 46-year-old showed glimpses of his old self, securing a split decision victory over the Mexican.

Silva Puts Upset Victory Down To “Self Belief”

Prior to his victory over Chávez Jr., which was followed by another triumph in the ring over fellow former UFC star Tito Ortiz, a host of fans and pundits, including Dana White, were sceptical of the Brazilian’s ability to continue competing in any form of combat sports.

Having proven his doubters wrong, Silva recently revealed what went into his upset win earlier this year. In a post uploaded to Instagram, “The Spider” threw shade at those who suggested he was too old to fight, and claimed self belief and dedication allowed him to complete the “impossible.”

“Short after my last MMA fight I heard in the media from a certain someone that somebody my age should not be fighting and that it was a mistake that I was put to fight. One month after I received an offer to fight in a boxing match in Mexico against a former champion 10 years younger then me, people said I was crazy and I couldn’t do it, and it was something impossible for me. But when your self belief is strong, you are dedicated, and the love for what you do is greater then any opinion, the impossible is simply routine. Always believe in yourself.”

Having knocked out Ortiz with relative ease, Silva is looking for a stiffer test when he next climbs through the ropes. During an appearance on The MMA Hour, the former UFC champ addressed rumors of a clash with 50-0 legend Floyd Mayweather. Silva said he’d be open to a fight with boxing’s biggest superstar.

“When I finished the fight with Tito and I saw on my Twitter and my Instagram, everybody talking ‘you need to fight with [Floyd] Mayweather!’ I don’t know, maybe this happens or not. I’m prepared for that. I just try to do my best everyday and I think this is a good fight, me and Mayweather.”
