As Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. looks to reinvigorate his career, he was pretty surprised when he discovered who his next opponent would be.

Chavez Jr. (52-5-1) has been looking to string together wins since his return to the ring in 2019. After a two-year hiatus following his loss to Canelo Alvarez, Chvez Jr. has gone 2-2 since his return. Coming off of a 4th round TKO of Jeyson Minda, he steps back into the ring on June 19th against no other than UFC legend Anderson Silva.

Done with MMA, Silva (34-11 MMA, 1-1 boxing) retired from the UFC after losing to Uriah Hall back in 2020. However, he left the possibility of competing in other combat sports completely open. Although his team initially denied the fight, the bout against Chavez Jr. was made official in early April.

While preparing for the fight, Chavez Jr. sat down with mmafighting.com to talk about the bout and his view of Silva.

“I’m surprised,” Chavez Jr. said when asked for his reaction to finding out Silva was going to be his next opponent. “Not for Anderson Silva but a lot of UFC fighters come to fight in boxing. I’m a little surprised that Anderson Silva took this challenge.”

“They said Anderson Silva wants to fight you. So I never [saw] Anderson Silva fight in the UFC because it’s too old,” Chavez Jr. added. “I know he’s a legend, I respect him. I think it’s a very interesting fight. These days, that’s the most important thing. I think it’s a very good fight.”

“I hear his name. Not a lot because I think he’s 45, 46 and I’m 35. I remember when the UFC started hearing his name but not too much. I know who he is. He’s a great fighter.”

Chavez Jr. Went on to share his thoughts on Silva’s chances and how the fight will play out.

“I expect a good athlete,” Chavez Jr. said. “A guy, he knows what he’s doing. He’s not a great boxer but he knows boxing. He might try to pressure me or put his weight [on me] and throw hard punches. But I think I’m too skilled for him. I’m expecting a hard fight for the first three or four rounds but after that I think the UFC fighters don’t have the [capacity] for making a disciplined fight. That’s the difference.”

“At the same time, the fight is eight rounds, it’s at 180 pounds and that’s better for him. That makes the fight more even and the other thing Anderson Silva fights two or three times in boxing. So he knows how to box. I think it’s another level but I’m never [overconfident] because I never fought at 180 pounds and I never fought eight rounds. I’m better than him. I’m a better fighter. I can beat him because I’m the [better] fighter but I’m not overconfident at all.”

As for how the fight will end, Chavez Jr. didn’t hold back any punches.

“I think the knockout is a great possibility in that fight,” Chavez Jr. said. “Because it’s [180 pounds], the day of the fight, both will weigh 190 or 200, so it’s a heavyweight fight.”

“I don’t know how he can take my punches. I feel I can knock him out. I’m not confident in only one punch but breaking him down, go to the body and head and I think I have a lot of possibilities to knockout him.”

Former UFC middleweight champion and future Hall of Famer Anderson Silva may have a second career in another combat sport, boxing.

The UFC released Silva after a knockout loss to Uriah Hall last year.  Bellator, the PFL, and One FC all made it known that they had no plans to sign Silva, leaving many wondering if he would retire. Silva instead decided to accept a boxing match against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr after initially denying rumors of the fight.

Silva discussed his upcoming boxing match against Chavez Jr. during an interview on Chael Sonnen’s Beyond the Fight. He also revealed several boxing promoters are interested in signing him. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“This is the first, but the different promoters called me and called the ICM to sign the contract to the people who hold me. But right now my focus is only on this fight. But a lot of different boxing promoters called me and called the company ICM that represents me to (fight). But right now focus is only on one fight on (June) 19th. Let’s see,” Silva said.

Silva has spoken for years about his interest in boxing, even hinting at a possible matchup against Roy Jones Jr. after his fight with Chavez Jr at 182 lbs in June. While admitting that the change in sport and Chavez Jr. are challenging, Silva believes he is up for the challenge.

“I love a challenge. I know it’s hard because Chavez Jr. has been doing boxing his entire life, but that’s a good challenge for me. I don’t need to prove anything to anybody. I do this because I love sport and I love fighting and this is my air. When you do something with your heart, you are successful. It doesn’t matter if you are win or not. So that’s why I accept the challenge for my mind and body,” Silva said.

Anderson Silva

Former UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, does not view his upcoming fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as a one off.

The MMA legend will square off against Chavez Jr. in the boxing ring on June 19.

The fight is scheduled for 10 rounds and will take place at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Silva vs. Chavez Jr. will headline on pay-per-view.

The Brazilian is open to boxing again after this fight.

“Yeah, of course it’s possible,” Silva said during a virtual media conference. “I love this sport. I love boxing. And, yeah, it’s possible. We’ll see.”

‘The Spider’ has often been linked to a fight with Roy Jones Jr. Now he is no longer contracted to the UFC, Silva believes this fight is a real possibility.

“Yeah, absolutely, because I talked about fighting Mr. Roy Jones Jr. for many, many years ago when I started fighting in the UFC,” Silva said. “I think now is coming closer to this reality, and let’s go see. My focus is just for this fight now, and then let’s go see in the future.”

The 45-year-old explained why he has decided to transition to boxing.

“First of all, boxing is an amazing sport,” Silva said. “I love boxing, and I practice boxing for a long time – not professionally, but I try to do my best. I continue training, and I continue challenging myself. This opportunity to fight Chavez Jr. is not about proving (anything) to anyone, it’s just to challenge myself. When I go inside to fight in the ring against Chavez Jr., I’ll do my best and stay happy and put my passion inside the ring.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)
