Conor McGregor really doesn’t like all the attention that Justin Gaethje is receiving these days.

On Saturday night, Gaethje scored one of the biggest wins of his mixed martial arts career, delivering a brilliantly-time head kick that sent his opponent, Dustin Poirier, crashing the canvas less than a minute into the second round. As the new owner of the promotion’s coveted bragging rights belt, the BMF title, everyone seems interested in cashing in on the moment by challenging ‘The Highlight’ to a fight.

It should come as no surprise that the first to do so was perennial tweeter-and-deleter, Conor McGregor. The Irish megastar immediately took to social media following Justin Gaethje’s ‘Headshot, Dead‘ sequel and seemingly challenged ‘The Highlight’ to a true clash of BMFs.

“I’m the real bmf, he can fight for pennies if he wants but I want spirits, I call the shots, I’m in it to launch shots, f*ck Chandler, you want it call for it,” McGregor tweeted.

Following suit, Michael Chandler also called for a potential clash with Justin Gaethje, though his approach was a bit more subtle. “Well now @Justin_Gaethje has the #BMF belt – he has to defend it against a worthy adversary,” Chandler wrote.

McGregor quoted the tweet from Chandler and responded with a laughing emoji. The Irishman issued a similar response when the official UFC Twitter account posted, “That’s one bad MF right there,” in reference to Gaethje’s knockout of Dustin Poirier.

Conor McGregor Continues to Insist His 2023 Return is Imminent

Conor McGregor has been linked to a fight with ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler long before their stint on this year’s season of The Ultimate Fighter began to air. Initially, the two lightweight stars were scheduled to scrap in late 2023, but that has become increasingly unlikely as the Irishman has failed to re-enter the USADA testing pool for a required six months of pre-fight screening. Despite that glaring detail, McGregor and UFC President Dana White have remained insistent that the long-awaited bout could still go down in December.

Whether or not Conor McGregor makes his return before the end of the year, it likely won’t be opposite Justin Gaethje as ‘The Highlight’ clearly has his sights set on capturing the UFC lightweight world championship.

Jorge Masvidal dropped 100k on teammate Dustin Poirier to come out on top in his UFC 291 clash with Justin Gaethje.

Fans inside the Delta Center were treated to a night of highlight-reel-worthy finishes, none bigger than Gaethje’s second-round head kick KO in the evening’s main event. ‘The Highlight’ lived up to his moniker, expertly setting up and delivering what would quickly be dubbed ‘Headshot, Dead Part Two‘ by MMA fans.

Dustin Poirier walked into the bout as a moderate favorite with some sportsbooks listing him at -150. Those odds plus his own admiration for ‘The Diamond’ was all Jorge Masvidal needed to drop a cool $100,000 on his teammate to leave Salt Lake City as the baddest motherf*cker in mixed martial arts.

Of course, things did not go Poirier’s way on Saturday night. As a result, The former interim lightweight champion left the Crossroads of the West without a title wrapped around his waist and Jorge Masvidal went home with a big chunk of his bank account gone.

“Great fight. I felt Dustin was dictating the pace. He landed the better shots in the first round. It was all going Dustin’s way. And then the fight game, you know?” Masvidal told TNT Sports following UFC 291. “Justin looked down, came up with a head kick, and caught my boy. It was a perfect kick… That was all she wrote.

“Dustin looked in the best shape ever, and obviously he’s my teammate, so I wanted the world for him to win,” Masvidal continued. “I made a wager that I probably shouldn’t have. I put $100,000 on DP, on Dustin Poirier. Kids, I’m sorry. You gotta go to public school now.” (h/t MMA News).

After evening the odds with Dustin Poirier at UFC 291, Justin Gaethje will now set his sights on another shot at becoming the lightweight world champion. The Highlight’ is expected to challenge the winner of October’s highly anticipated rematch between former titleholder Charles Oliveira and reigning 155-pound king, Islam Makhachev. Gaethje could also potentially step up and act as the official backup for the event, should either Makhachev or ‘Do Bronx’ be forced to withdraw.

Justin Gaethje wants title rematch with Charles Oliveira instead of Islam Makhachev redemption UFC 291

UFC lightweight Justin Gaethje wants Charles Oliveira to defeat Islam Mahkahcev to step up the perfect chance of redemption.

Last nights clash between Gaethje and Dustin Poirier did not disappoint the pre-fight hype. After what was a competitive first round with narrow misses from both men, Gaethje wasted no time to land the fatal blow a minute into the second round.

Gaethje had began to throw the head kick in the first round, but it wasn’t until he put it behind a fake back hand that it landed cleanly. Poirier did not see it coming and send his unconscious body crashing to the floor, forcing referee Herb Dean spring to action before he could receive any more punishment.

The win now sets Gaethje up to face the winner of Makhachev and Oliveira for the lightweight title.

Justin Gaethje hoping for revenge

With Makhchev and Oliveira set to rematch this October in the main event of UFC 294, Gaethje will have to wait until it least the first quarter of 2024 for his shot. However, the 33-year-old doesn’t seem to bothered about that, and is in fact already thinking about having his own rematch with Oliveira.

“I’d prefer Charles because he beat me,” Gaethje said to the media. “I’m a competitor, this chance at redemption was amazing… It drove me to work harder, be ready more, but they’re the best in the world, and I want to fight the best in the world. After the last fight, I couldn’t see Charles winning [against Islam at UFC 294] but I can hope.”

Gaethje and Oliveira squared off at UFC 274 in May of 2022, in which the latter would secure a first-round stoppage. After surviving a couple early knockdowns, Oliveira would land a right hand that would send ‘The Highlight’ to floor and would quickly jump on his back – securing a rear naked choke finish.

However, Gaethje has seemed to add more layers to his game and has had more mature performance in his last two outings.

Justin Gaethje should fight Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 he's ready Chael Sonnen

Chael Sonnen is very impressed with Justin Gaethje’s recent performance over Dustin Poirier and is fully convinced that Gaethje is not only ready for UFC 294, but that Gaethje should take Charles Oliveira’s place in fighting Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title.

UFC 291 was an absolutely magnificent card, headlined by one of the most desired rematches in years. Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier stepped into the octagon and delivered a truly fantastic fight. Things were so competitive in the first round, and it all looked like things could go either way. The second round started similarly to the first, with neither fighter really gaining a true upper hand. Then, as soon as the round began, it was almost just as quickly that it was over.

Justin Gaethje landed the most picture-perfect headkick to send Poirier crashing to the ground. He followed up the kick with a ferocious hammer fist, and the referee Herb Dead didn’t waste any time: as he soon came baseball sliding in to protect Poirier from more damage and to stop the fight.

Justin Gaethje reigns victorious in the rematch, but now Chael Sonnen is eager to see him quickly turn things around for a title match at UFC 294

So, Justin Gaethje would prevail in the infamous rematch fans had been dying to see for so long. Now, even though he and Poirier are 1-1, many fans, and even Chael Sonnen himself would love to see Gaethje make the quick turnaround for a title fight.

“I’m not positive that Charles Oliveira wants to do that fight,” Sonnen speculated on the ESPN post-fight show. “I don’t want to be a spoiler but I read his Twitter account, he’s saying he wants to fight Conor McGregor next. And the only reason I bring that to you: we at minimum have a backup. We thought that Justin Gaethje or [Dustin] Poirier, whoever came out would be the No. 1 contender. We also thought they’d be hurt. We thought this was going to be a bludgeon. We thought they were gonna be swapping stories in the hospital.”

“This was a surprise finish,” Chael Sonnen continued “He’s (Justin Gaethje is) surprisingly fresh… I think he’s ready to go in.”

“The Charles Oliveira vs. [Islam] Makhachev fight was made because nobody thought — whoever won this fight was not going to make a quick turn to go back,” Anthony Smith added on-air during the post-fight show. “And everyone knows that Gaethje does not like short-notice fights, he likes a lot of time to prepare, he likes a lot of rest. I think that if the matchmakers had known this would possibly be the result, they may have waited a little bit longer to match that Oliveira fight.”

Even Justin Gaethje himself seemed pretty open to the idea of being a backup for the Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira fight, something that is extremely uncharacteristic for him. “I’d want to go watch it, yeah,” he said when asked about Makhachev vs. Oliveira. “I don’t think I’d want to be a backup. Unless they pay me a s— ton of money, then maybe. Maybe.”

Even saying maybe is a far cry from what Gaethje would usually say: which would have been something along the lines of an emphatic no. So, things are looking very interesting in the lightweight division now. Poirier and Justin Gaethje will need to settle their infamous rivalry with a trilogy fight one day, and Gaethje is now a clear-cut number-one contender for the title.

Conor McGregor guarantees KO win over Justin Gaethje following BMF title win at UFC 291

Appearing to blow-off a targeted return to the Octagon against Michael Chandler, former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor has switched his attention to newly-minted symbolic BMF titleholder, Justin Gaethje following his victory at UFC 291 – vowing to knock out the Arizona native if they meet.

Headlining UFC 291 last night in Salt Lake City, Utah, former interim lightweight champion, Gaethje, avenged a 2018 TKO to fellow former interim gold holder and common-foe, Dustin Poirier – stopping the Lafayette native with an earth-shattering second round high-kick knockout.

Turning in his second consecutive victory following an unsuccessful title siege against former titleholder, Charles Oliveira, Gaethje returned earlier this year in a majority decision win over the then-surging Rafael Fiziev, before striking BMF championship spoils overnight at the Delta Center with a high-kick KO triumph against Poirier.

And immediately earned the attention of former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion, McGregor, the Dubliner welcomed a BMF title fight with Gaethje, appearing to write off an expected welterweight return against Chandler.

Furthermore, the 35-year-old striker has now called his shot ahead of a potential fight with Gaethje – claiming he would stop the former interim kingpin with a one-punch knockout.

“I KO him (Justin Gaethje) [with] one shot,” Conor McGregor tweeted. “Guarantee it.”

Scoffing at McGregor’s call out in the immediate aftermath of his win over common-rival, Poirier, Gaethje accused the Dubliner of steroid use during his two-year layoff from the Octagon – shutting down a bout with anyone who has utilized performance-enhancing drugs to boot.

“I’m not going to fight someone on steroids,” Justin Gaethje said of a fight with Conor McGregor during his post-fight press conference at UFC 291. “I’ve never taken steroids in my life, never will – well,  maybe when I retire, I might, but I’ve never taken steroids, and I don’t want to fight someone that’s cheating. And I probably shouldn’t even say that I want the fight, but it’s the truth.”
