UFC president Dana White has confirmed Khabib Nurmagomedov will defend his lightweight title against interim champion Justin Gaethje on October 24.

White confirmed while speaking with CNN that Nurmagomedov will return to action later this year after tragically losing his father earlier this month after the 57-year-old contracted the coronavirus and suffered health issues and sadly passed away after months battling his illnesses.

“It’s been very rough on him,” White told CNN Sport’s Don Riddell. “His father was a hero to him, he loved his father, they had a very close relationship and it was very hard on him.”

Nurmagomedov was originally scheduled to face Tony Ferguson in April, but the undefeated Russian was forced out of the bout due to travel issues brought on by the global pandemic.

Gaethje stepped up on late notice to dominate and stop Tony Ferguson in the fifth round on May 9 at UFC 249 to claim the interim title at lightweight. He was originally thought to be unifying the division with Nuramgomedov this summer but news of the death Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s death has pushed the fight back.

According to White the fight will still go ahead in 2020 and the date set is October 24 at a venue to be confirmed, he said.

“It’s going to happen, tell you right here right now. That fight is going to happen, October 24.

Nurmagomedov hasn’t fought since tapping Dustin Poirier inside three rounds to defend his title at UFC 242 in September 2019. Yesterday, he was pictured for the first time in training since the death of his father. If White is correct the Russian will now enter camp a full camp ahead of his fight in a few months’ time.

Do you think Dana White will be able to pull of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Justin Gaethje on October 24?

Ali Abdelaziz is sure of one thing — Conor McGregor won’t be fighting for the lightweight title anytime soon.

Nurmagomedov is expected to face Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title unification fight that was set to take place in September. However, it is unlikely that “The Eagle” will be back anytime soon following the recent death of his father Abdulmanap.

Abdelaziz has since claimed that Nurmagomedov will be back before the end of the year to face Gaethje. As for whether McGregor could possibly be inserted into the title picture, Nurmagomedov’s manager was clear as to how the Irishman could possibly get a shot in the future.

“Justin said no (to McGregor),” Abdelaziz told TMZ (via BJ Penn). “Khabib told me to go tell Justin to fight Conor. Justin said no. Listen, we dictate this. Conor right now he can be a backup fighter. He can go make weight and maybe make some money, but at the end of the day, that’s the two champions. He’s not even No. 3, he’s No. 4 or No. 5. Conor can go fight Nate (Diaz) or (Jorge) Masvidal.

“We’re not interested in fighting him. He needs to get some wins and he needs to fight some good opponents. I said, the only way he can fight Khabib is if he fights Islam Makhachev, then he can fight Khabib.”

For now, McGregor is retired with one of the reasons being the UFC’s resistance in letting him fight Gaethje in the meantime. However, UFC president Dana White wouldn’t be surprised if he returned next year once things start to move again.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things play out then, especially as White’s plan all along was for McGregor to face the winner of Nurmgamedov vs. Tony Ferguson earlier this year.

Do you think McGregor will get a title shot in his next fight? Or will he have to fight some contenders?

Khabib Nurmagomedov

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will fight Justin Gaethje later this year despite the death of his father earlier this month.

The undefeated Russian was expected to face interim lightweight champion Gaethje at UFC 253 in September. However, that now seems unlikely after his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov passed away due to health issues stemming from contracting the coronavirus.

MMA manager, Ali Abdelaziz has moved to squash rumours his client is retiring from the sport. He also says he and Nurmagomedov are currently in discussions with the UFC about his next fight.

“Khabib is not retiring,” Abdelaziz told TMZ Sports. “Khabib has some goals to accomplish. You will see him before the end of the year. Now him and Dana are talking and me talking to the matchmaker and we are trying to set a date. I’m sure Dana is going to let everybody know when Khabib is going to fight.”

Abdelaziz then began selling the prospect of Nurmagomedov fighting Gaethje and even told fans to expect to see this “blockbuster main event” by the end of 2020, he said.

“We have a blockbuster main event against Justin Gaethje. Two of the best lightweight in the world today in the recent era. We’ve seen what Khabib does to all of his opponents. We’ve seen what Justin Gaehtje did to his last opponent. He made him look like an absolute amateur and that’s the best two guys in the world. They are going to fight.”

“You will see Khabib and Justin fight before the end of the year for sure.”

Nurmagomedov hasn’t fought since defending his title agiasnt Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 in September 2019. In the meantime, Gaethje picked up the interim belt by upsetting Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 in May.
