UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman believes Colby Covington proved himself at UFC 245. Back in Dec. 2019, Usman defended his gold against Covington. The title bout headlined UFC 245 inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both men went back-and-forth in an instant classic but it was Usman who scored the fifth-round TKO victory. […]

Superfights seem to be the desire of all champions in the UFC today. However, don’t expect to see UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman challenging for a second title anytime soon.

Usman was recently a guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” to talk about several topics. During the show, Usman discussed whether or not he’d fight lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov or middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. Usman and Nurmagomedov are both friends and are represented by Ali Abdelaziz.

Also, Usman and Adesanya are close as they are both fellow countrymen from Nigeria, and are the first African UFC champions of all time. Usman said he’d never fight Nurmagomedov, who he considers to be a brother, and doesn’t see himself fighting Adesanya either. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I would never fight Khabib – that’s my brother,” Usman said. “It’s just a mutual respect. I don’t see myself ever fighting Khabib. I don’t see myself ever fighting Israel, even though a lot of people have hinted toward it. I don’t see myself fighting him. Having two belts in Nigeria is better than just having one guy hold two belts. There’s no desire there. That’s my guy. He’s special.”

Usman comes off the first title defense of his career this past December. He and Colby Covington put on a tremendous back-and-forth contest in the UFC 245 main event. However, midway through the fight, Usman broke Covington’s jaw. The pain became too much for Covington to deal with late in the final round, as Usman finished “Chaos” with a barrage of shots.

Now, Usman is nursing a hand injury before getting back into the Octagon. He could possibly fight 2019 Fighter Of The Year Jorge Masvidal next, a fight that seems to have some personal beef mixed into it. Should Masvidal instead opt to fight Conor McGregor next, Usman could be looking at taking on the winner of Tyron Woodley and Leon Edwards at UFC London this March.

Usman actually took the title from Woodley back in March with a dominant performance over five rounds. He took home the strap with a lopsided unanimous decision victory. Woodley insists he had a lot going on during that time, and is desperate for a rematch. He could very well get it if he can get past Edwards in enemy territory.

Would you like to see Usman fight Nurmagomedov or Adesanya?

Leon Edwards Is Guaranteed Next Title Shot If He Beats Tyron Woodley

British welterweight contender Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards has recently signed a new contract with the UFC, which apparently contains an impressive clause. British welterweight contender Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards has recently signed a new contract with the UFC, which apparently contains an impressive clause. The 28-year-old will meet former 170lb king Tyron Woodley in the UFC London main event taking place on March 21 at the O2 Arena. According to Edwards with a win in front of his home town crowd, he will be granted a title shot. He has to be, its written into his contract. However, many believe Jorge Masvidal is next in line at 170lb. Speaking to Aaron Bronsteter about a potential fight between ‘Gamebred’ and Kamaru Usman, he said.

“If I fight in March and he (Usman) is still injured, he’s still free before summer I think I’ll be the next in line. That’s how its written in my contract, I’m next in line.  It depends if he’s fighting before, in April or May they might make that fight happen (against Jorge Masvidal), but if not it’ll 100% be me for the summer time.

‘Rocky’ who is
currently riding an eight-fight win streak confirmed the clause is in his contract
and when asked to elaborate on the subject, he said. “After beating Tyron
Woodley, I will receive a title shot next. Like I’ve said I’m on the most fight
win streak in the division. I just dominated a former world champion, so after
beating him its guaranteed that I am next in line.”

It’s hard to disagree with the fighter from Birmingham. Should he beat Woodley he will have earned a career best win, stretching his streak to nine. Although fans will clamor for the popular Masvidal to get a shot, he may be forced to wait. Whilst ‘Street Jesus’ did enjoy an impressive 2019, he doesn’t have the wins and after UFC London, won’t have a bigger name on his record than Tyron Woodley. Whilst the former champion must fancy his chances at getting a shot at his old title after hearing this. If he emerges victorious at the O2 Arena on March 21 perhaps Woodley gets next on Usman. Whatever happen 2020 is going to be an exciting year in the welterweight division.

Will Leon Edwards get the next welterweight title shot
by beating Tyron Woodley?

Jorge Masvidal: I’ll F*ck Up Kamaru Usman While I Wait For McGregor

Jorge Masvidal wants to fight Conor McGregor, but he’s in no rush to do so. Jorge Masvidal wants to fight Conor McGregor, but he’s in no rush to do so.

Masvidal has been a long-rumored opponent of the Irish superstar, but those talks vamped up even more so after McGregor’s return last weekend. McGregor headlined UFC 246 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in a welterweight bout with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. The former two-division champion only needed 40 seconds to put Cerrone away with a beautiful performance.

“Gamebred” was front-and-center in the crowd, watching the action unfold. However, Masvidal, nor anyone else, was specifically called out by McGregor after his win. Speaking to the “Le Batard & Friends” podcast, Masvidal said he doesn’t think McGregor is ready for him.

The UFC’s BMF Champ won’t be losing any sleep if that’s the case, as he’s more than willing to move on to a potential UFC welterweight championship fight with current titleholder Kamaru Usman. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“He’s talking a lot of sh*t. But it’s all sh*t cause he doesn’t want this,” Masvidal said. “He could have cut the sickest promo — he could have cut the sickest promo of life. Had everybody extra wanting it and talking about it. We kind of understand where they’re going. Certain things he said on the microphone as well that he doesn’t feel he’s not up to speed, that he needs to work on this, he needs to work on that.

“I get it, man. Go back in there, find your timing, when you feel you’re ready for the challenge, we do it. There’s no rush. I’ll go get my title meanwhile. I’ll go f*ck up [Kamaru] Usman meanwhile, and then me and Conor can talk in the future if he wants to or not. It doesn’t really matter. I’m not here to bully people into fights or keep asking for the fight. I’m going to go about my business like I said I always will.”

Masvidal comes off a Fighter Of The Year run in 2019, in which he finished all three of his opponents. The first being Darren Till, who Masvidal knocked out in dramatic fashion in front of Till’s own native English crowd. He followed that up with a record-breaking five-second knockout of Ben Askren, ending “Funky’s” undefeated streak.

And finally, Masvidal picked up a TKO win over Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in November, following a Doctor Stoppage, to win the BMF Championship. With the tremendous amount of hype carried into 2020 by Masvidal, it should be noted that, whatever the American Top Team (ATT) product decides to do, it’s going to be huge.

What do you think about Masvidal saying he’ll “f*ck up” Usman while he waits for McGregor?

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman claims he’s the man who breaks faces at 170 pounds, not Jorge Masvidal.

One of “Gamebred’s” favorite lines is to promise that he’s going to break the face of his upcoming opponent. This picked up steam after Masvidal broke the all-time fastest UFC knockout record at five seconds when he nailed Ben Askren with a flying knee last year. Masvidal had a Fighter Of The Year-caliber 2019, with many suggesting he’s next in line to challenge Usman for the title.

Masvidal has made it very clear he doesn’t like Usman and would love to “break his face,” and win gold in the process. Usman caught wind of these comments, responding on Twitter with a message of his own. “The Nigerian Nightmare” claimed he is the only one breaking faces at welterweight, not “Gamebred.”

“The face I make when I hear them say their gonna break someone’s face. We all know who breaks faces in this division. And That’s “ON GOD.””

Usman is likely referring to his recent title defense over Colby Covington this past December in the UFC 245 main event. Half-way through the back-and-forth brawl, Usman broke Covington’s jaw with a huge shot. Covington battled through, however, he was finished late in the fifth and final round after an onslaught from the champion. There have been conflicting reports about Usman being out “indefinitely” with an injury.

The welterweight champ was quick to shoot these rumors down, despite the fact that he was wearing a cast during UFC 246 fight week in Las Vegas. Masvidal still has the option to fight Conor McGregor next as well, which could make the welterweight title picture stall out for a while. It will be interesting to see what’s next for Usman and if he and Masvidall will ever get to settle their differences inside the Octagon at some point this year.

What do you make of Usman’s comments towards Masvidal? Do you think the pair will fight each other this year?
