Last night’s (Sat., May 12, 2018) UFC 224 from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ended up being an entertaining night of fights full of violent knockouts and gutsy performances.

The Brazilian crowd was treated to many a victory by their countrymen and women, and Amanda Nunes retained her bantamweight title with a brutal fifth-round stoppage of Raquel Pennington.

A former welterweight continued his ascent up the middleweight ladder with a narrow victory and Mackenzie Dern also shut up all the naysayers who chided her for coming in seven pounds overweight (kind of).

Overall, UFC 224 made for a great night of fights. Let’s take a look at what we’re left with the morning after with the five biggest takeaways from the event.

6. Raquel Pennington Needs New Cornermen

Pennington did her best and hung in there for over four rounds against Nunes, who otherwise dominated the challenger and bloodied up her face.

Despite the damage Pennington accrued as well as her telling her cornermen that she was done, it was the referee who ultimately saved Pennington from more needless damage, ubt not before she absorbed a ton of just that.

It’s the corner’s job to know when to protect a fighter from themselves, as fighters usually will opt to fight on. Pennington actually told her corner that she was done, yet they still sent her out just to get turned into a bloody mess in the fifth round.

”Rocky” really needs to find better cornermen, because the incident could have put her livelihood in peril.

Kelvin Gastelum Will Turn Down Any Fight But Title Shot

It’s title shot or bust for Kelvin Gastelum:

Kelvin Gastelum isn’t budging after his latest high-profile win at 185 pounds.

The No. 5-ranked middleweight immediately called out for a title shot against the winner of UFC 225’s Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero main event after his split decision win (highlights here) over veteran Ronaldo Souza in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., May 12, 2018) UFC 224 from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It was a close, back-and-forth bout that saw both men have their respective moments and legitimately could have gone either way, but ultimately Gastelum squeaked by the Brazilian jiu-jitsu master to score his second straight victory over a big name after knocking out Michael Bisping last November.

At the post-fight press conference, Gastelum reaffirmed his desire for a title shot and said he wouldn’t accept any other match-up based on his recent body of work:

“I definitely feel like a title shot should be next. I don’t think I’d accept any other fight than the title shot. I’m the most active middleweight there has been. All the guys (I’ve beat) are top-10 and former champions, so I feel like I deserve it.”

There are a couple things going for Gastelum here, and also a few things that may prevent him from getting his coveted title fight.

Working for him is the fact that the middleweight division is lacking in truly elite title contenders; Romero and Gastelum have effectively cleared out the once-crowded top five in the last two years. And with many top names booked or injured, his body of work is no doubt impressive in his frequency and level of competition in addition to how he’s able to knock anyone’s lights out.

But working against him is the fact that he was tapped out by No. 4-ranked former champion Chris Weidman last year, and also that his record over his last four fights, as a result, is just 2-1(1). The no contest was originally a knockout over Vitor Belfort, but beating “The Phenom” at this point isn’t close to what it used to be. He also knocked out former champ Bisping, but ‘The Count’ was a late replacement who had been badly hurt and choked by Georges St-Pierre only three weeks before.

That may or may not be the resumé of a truly deserving title contender, but his rise up the ranks can’t be denied so the 26-year-old future star should get the fight he wants soon.

It’s the only fight he’ll accept, and one for which he said he’s willing to sit out until he gets:

“I definitely feel I deserve the shot. So I definitely feel like I will sit out until my shot is next.”

Five Best Fights To Make After UFC 224

Check out the five best fights to make after last night’s thrilling UFC 224:

Although some were certainly overlooking the card, UFC 224, which took place last night (Sat., May 12, 2018) live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, turned out to be an incredible event from top to bottom.

The card featured not only a plethora of exciting fights but a high number of electrifying finishes as well, so many that it tied 2014’s UFC Fight Night 55 for the most finishes on a UFC card with 11.

In the main event, women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes dominated Raquel Pennington en route to a fifth-round stoppage victory, successfully defending her 135-pound title for the third consecutive time.

In the co-main event, former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner Kelvin Gastelum scored a narrow, hard-fought split decision victory over Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Touted women’s strawweight Mackenzie Dern also continued her rise despite a big weight miss, dropping and submitting Amanda Cooper with ease.

With the event now in the rearview mirror, let’s take a look at the five best fights to make moving forward:

Cris Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes

Prior to booking Nunes vs. Pennington, UFC president Dana White had expressed interest in scheduling a super fight between Nunes and women’s 145-pound champion Cris Cyborg.

Both fighters had appeared to show some level of interest in the potential bout as well, although it never came to fruition.

Now is the time to make it happen, however.

Following her victory over Pennington, Nunes has no clear challenger awaiting her at 135 pounds. Cyborg, on the other hand, is coming off of a vicious stoppage victory over Yana Kunitskaya, and she too doesn’t have a definite challenger awaiting her. She hardly has a division around her if we’re honest.

Cyborg could conceivably defend her title against the winner of UFC 225’s Holly Holm vs. Megan Anderson bout next month. Furthermore, Cyborg has already beaten Holm and Anderson will only be making her UFC debut in the upcoming bout, although it is indeed true that she was momentarily scheduled to fight Cyborg last summer.

Regardless, a bout between Cyborg and Nunes makes sense. Both are dominant Brazilian champions and Nunes could very well have the skills required to challenge Cyborg.

It’s simply the biggest women’s bout the UFC can book right now and has to happen.

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Jacare Souza Full Fight Video Highlights

This was a heck of a scrap!

In the co-main event of last night’s (Sat. May 12, 2018) UFC 224 pay-per-view (PPV), top-ranked UFC middleweights Kelvin Gastelum and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza went to war.

Gastelum came into the fight fresh off a first-round knockout victory over former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping in Shanghai this past November. Prior to that, he suffered his first loss after a three-fight win streak to Chris Weidman via third-round submission the previous July. A win over Souza after downing a recent 185-pound champion in Bisping would’ve put the former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner right in championship contention.

Souza entered the Octagon after knocking out Derek Brunson in stunning fashion in the first round of their meeting this past January. Prior to that he also had a win streak snapped, this one by current 185-pound titleholder Robert Whittaker (before he became champion).

If Souza had been able to stop the hype train of Gastelum, fresh off his knockout win over Bisping, he himself could be looking at a shot at middleweight gold.

Early on Gastelum was able to land some nice shots before getting taken down and maneuvered on the ground. Souza came close to getting an armbar to end the round, but Gastelum was able to escape just as the bell rang.

For the remaining two rounds, a striking battle mostly consumed the bout, with the exception of a few moments of Souza getting it to the ground. Mostly, Gastelum got the better of the striking exchanges, and the judges saw it that way as well after awarding him the split decision win.
