Tonight (Feb. 22, 2018), the UFC confirmed that a pivotal middleweight fight between No. 2-ranked Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and No. 5-ranked Kelvin Gastelum will be taking place at UFC 222, which is set for May 12, 2018 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

After suffering a brutal stoppage loss to divisional champion Robert Whittaker last April, “Jacare” bounced back last month with an impressive TKO victory over Derek Brunson in the main event of UFC on FOX 27.

Gastelum, on the other hand, suffered a submission loss to Chris Weidman last July before viciously knocking out former champion Michael Bisping late last year in Shanghai, China.

UFC 224 currently does not have a main event. Originally, there were rumors indicating that the UFC was targeting a super fight between Brazilian champions Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes to headline the card, but Cyborg was recently booked to take on Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 222. There’s a possibility that Nunes could still headline the card, perhaps to defend her title against Raquel Pennington.

“Just the fight that will get me to the title shot,” Gastelum said on a recent episode of ESPN’s 5ive Rounds podcast. “That’s the fight I want. I know I probably won’t get a title shot next, but I want to fight the No. 1 contender.”

And if that opportunity presents itself at welterweight, Gastelum isn’t opposed to cutting back down to 170 pounds:

“If it’s at welterweight, I will make the cut. The cut is dreadful and the diet is extreme, but if it’s worth it, I will do it.”

As far as potential opponents go, Gastelum named Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza as a possibility, although he’s a bit weary of fighting the Brazilian at UFC 224 in his native country:

“I would love to fight in Rio, and obviously a fight with Jacare would propel me to where I want to go. I’m scared of that commission. I don’t know what to think of the commission,” Gastelum said.

“I should probably talk to someone in the commission or [UFC vice president of regulatory affairs] Marc Ratner. Hopefully, he’d keep me safe and nothing happens to my [drug] samples. I just don’t know what to think of the commission over there.”

The UFC’s FOX-aired cards seem to be getting a good deal smaller in scope and quality since the UFC signed over television broadcasting rights to FOX.

The first event featured a heavyweight title fight, something that would entice perhaps more casual fans to eventually order a PPV.

Now, the main cards are extremely top-heavy at best, and not noteworthy at worst. Saturday night was a typical FOX card in 2017/2018; some bright spots and a whole lot of waiting and drawn out fights in between.

Regardless, the UFC landscape has changed again, with a once-great middleweight re-emerging as a top contender and a slew of other changes to the chess game that makes up the UFC weight divisions.

Where do the fighters of UFC on FOX 27 go from here? We broke that down in our list of the five best fights to make following UFC on FOX 27:

5. Andre Fili vs. Doo Ho Choi

Fili and Choi are two solid but young featherweights who are looking to establish themselves in the division with as much consistency as they can muster.

Choi faltered a bit in his last bout, dropping a TKO loss to veteran Jeremy Stephens, while Fili got back on track with a close split decision over Dennis Bermudez in the UFC on FOX 27 co-main event.

Both men have shown flashes of brilliance during their UFC careers, but have been dealt some stiff competition given their ages and experience.

A fight between the two is perfect for this point and time in their respective careers, and a win for either man woud put them that much closer to the consistency needed to make it to a title shot in a stacked division like featherweight.

Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has lost two of his last fights, and both by way of brutal finish.

Regardless, “The Count” is considering one last fight at the next UFC event in London this March despite pressure from friends and family to retire beforehand.

Bisping revealed his plan, as well as the resistance he is facing from his family, on his podcast Believe You Me (via MMA Fighting):

“There’s a fight in the works for myself, and I’ve got until the end of the day to tell the UFC whether or not I’m taking it. There’s an offer that’s been made to me, and all fairness to the UFC, I’ve been kind of taking my time to give them an answer so I’ve got until the end of the day to give them an answer.

“I’m just debating whether or not I take the fight. For me, whether or not those people can see, I have a bad eye. I have a bad eye and my wife doesn’t want me to continue fighting, and my manager doesn’t want me to continue fighting. I see out of that eye but not as well as I used to, and I’m still a young man so it’s kind of the reason I may hang the gloves up. My wife and manager and friends and people close to me say, ‘Mike, what do you want to do that for? You’ve done it. You’ve had the belt.’ I’ve done it. I’ve done what I set out to achieve.”

Bisping lost the belt to Georges St-Pierre by third-round submission at UFC 217 before making a three-week turnaround in a fight against Kelvin Gastelum, where he was brutally knocked out in the first round.

While his friends and family have made it clear they wish for him to retire now, Bisping feels compelled to fight one last time in front of his hometown fans.

Fight fans and pundits alike all expressed concern over Michael Bisping’s first-round knockout loss to Kelvin Gastelum just three weeks after from Bisping’s loss to GSP at UFC 217.

Now, you can count longtime adversary of the former middleweight champion Yoel Romero in with those who were concerned.

Despite a history of trash talking between the two, Romero questioned why Bisping was encouraged to and allowed to fight less than a month after a grueling defeat while on a recent appearance on The MMA Hour:

“You know, that was the big surprise. Why? It’s so crazy, it doesn’t make sense. I don’t know how the athletic commission said yes and accepted that he’d fight. It’s so crazy, it’s so crazy.

“I don’t know how the family, the relatives of Michael Bisping allowed him to fight,” Romero explained. “I don’t know why the team, the coaches said, ‘OK, take the fight.’

“I don’t know why Michael Bisping took the fight. I don’t know why the UFC said yes. This is very dangerous, it’s not just a fight, it’s very dangerous. Normally, he needed rest for like 16 to 19 days, you know. But he’s sleeping, he didn’t tap out, he went to sleep (in the St-Pierre bout). When that happens in a fight, like a choke or knockout, you need a rest, like a minimum of 16 days.”

Bisping was bloodied and battered and eventually choked out by Georges St. Pierre, losing his middleweight title in the process. Then out of nowhere, Bisping took a fight with Gastelum after Anderson Silva once again tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Gastelum viciously knocked the recently deposed champ out in the first round, in a way Bisping had never been knocked out before. Even though Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort had knocked him out years ago, he fought into the second and third rounds respectively and didn’t get put out in two minutes flat.
