Only two weeks ago, Michael Bisping was defending the UFC middleweight title against former UFC welterweight champion and all-time great, Georges St-Pierre, at UFC 217.

As seen in the fight, St-Pierre ended up submitting Bisping with a third-round rear-naked choke to win the middleweight title that earned him the right to call himself a two-division champion.

Bisping is merely one week away from his next fight when he takes on ninth-ranked middleweight Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night 122 in the main event.

Some people including Bisping’s striking coach Jason Parillo believe that this could be a tougher fight than against GSP for Bisping.

Parillo recently spoke with the ESPN Five Rounds podcast (Transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting) about Bisping’s upcoming fight against Gastelum.

“Really, Kelvin is, in my opinion, on the feet, a tougher fight than Georges St-Pierre,” said Parillo. “It’s not like Mike’s a guy that shoots and wrestles all the time so obviously it’s gonna be a lot of stand up fighting, and this guy’s a bigger threat than I think that even Georges was.”

Make no mistake about it, GSP is an MMA Legend and the long-time welterweight kingpin of the UFC. However, he decided to take some time off from competition and retired from the sport as the reigning champion. After being out of action for almost four years, he decided to come back and fight Bisping.

Parillo stated that while a quick turn around like this could be a reckless move for most fighters, Bisping is different and already mentally focused.

“This guy’s got a different mind frame. Is it gonna hurt or help him? We’re gonna find out. . . You can look at it both ways. I’m looking that it’s a good thing that Michael wants to do. It’s something that he’s very happy about the decision that he made to do this, so we’ve got to ride that positive mind into this fight and hope for the best.”

“I’m concerned with everybody. If the guy’s got two arms and two legs and breathes, there’s a concern. You’ve got to try to look at the concern of it, but you’ve also gotta support your athlete and go in there with a positive mind frame. I know Michael can beat Kelvin Gastelum. I know Michael could beat GSP. I truly believe in my heart of hearts that Michael would’ve started running away with it had we got to that fourth round.

“Mike is a world champion, and he can fight any guy on the planet. Is there a question about how he’s gonna be mentally with how close this fight is? Sure, there could be. But I have a feeling Mike’s head is gonna be right in this fight, and it’s something that he really wants to go out there and win and try to dust off his last loss. We’re going in. We’re gonna go in regardless of whether I have concerns or don’t have concerns. We’re gonna go in and we’re gonna go in there to win.”

The early betting odds for the new main event of UFC Fight Night 122 have been released.

One of the biggest news stories last week was the revelation that former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was pulled from his bout against Kelvin Gastelum at the upcoming event after he was flagged due to a potential U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) violation.

The promotion then was searching to find a replacement for Silva, and they found former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. There are some questions regarding if a three-week turnaround will be too much for Bisping and the early odds seem to suggest so.

The fight will mean that Bisping is fighting on two different continents in two UFC main events in just a 21-day span. Bisping has opened as a +120 underdog to -161 favorite Gastelum, according to William Hill, which posted the first line for the fight (via bestfightodds.com).

By breaking this down, if you place a winning $100 bet on Bisping would result in a profit of $120. If you place a winning bet on Gastelum would net a profit of $62.11. That gives an implied winning probability of 45.5 percent for Bisping and 61.7 percent for Gastelum.

UFC Fight Night 122 is set to take place on November 25, 2017, at Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. The main card will air on the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, while the preliminary card will also air on Fight Pass.

Michael Bisping Replaces Anderson Silva at UFC Shanghai After Failed Drug Test

Michael Bisping suffered one of the toughest losses of his UFC career at UFC 217, dropping the middleweight championship to Georges St-Pierre after getting choked out cold. So how is the Brit recovering from that blow? By taking a short-notice fight, of course!

Just seven days removed from his loss, Bisping is now penned in to face The Ultimate Fighter season 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of UFC Fight Night 122. Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting first broke the news, which was then confirmed by the UFC:

Bisping steps into the bout as a replacement for Anderson Silva, who was removed from the card after failing an out-of-competition drug test. The exact nature of the failure is unknown at this time, though the Brazilian was previously suspended for a drug test administered ahead of his UFC 183 bout with Nick Diaz.

While the loss of Silva is a tough blow for both fans and the UFC, Gastelum greatly benefits from the change, moving from a bout with an aging legend to a fighter who just recently held the strap. Coming off a loss to Chris Weidman in July, Gastelum has the opportunity to jump back into the hunt for a title shot with the Bisping fight. That’s easier said than done, of course, as The Count will be looking to rebound off Gastelum to show he remains a force in the cage.

Bisping vs. Gastelum will take place on November 25 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. Expect fireworks.

A relatively calm Friday in mixed martial arts just turned into one of the craziest days of the year.

Moments after UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor jumped into the cage at Bellator 187 and shoved referee Marc Goddard before slapping a security guard, news has come that another UFC superstar has been flagged for his second potential USADA violation.

The UFC announced that Anderson Silva had been flagged in an out-of-competition sample and has been pulled from his main event bout versus Kelvin Gastelum at November 25’s UFC Shanghai:

“The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Anderson Silva of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collected on October 26, 2017. As a result, Silva has been provisionally suspended by USADA. Due to the proximity of Silva’s upcoming scheduled bout at UFC Fight Night, Shanghai, China on November 25, 2017 against Kelvin Gastelum, Silva has been removed from the card and UFC is currently seeking a replacement.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Silva. Under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.”

If found guilty, the violation would be Silva’s second after he tested positive for anabolic steroids following his UFC 183 win over Nick Diaz, after which he was suspended for one full year.

‘The Spider’ will, of course, be afforded full due process, but with two violations on his record, he’s now heading into Jon Jones territory, so his legacy will understandably be called into question.

And at 42 years old, he’s running out of time to return from his latest mishap.
