Stamp your middleweight papers within the top-fifteen middleweight rankings for sure, Kevin ‘The Trailblazer’ Holland. We’ve seen upkick knockouts as of recent times in the UFC, but tonight’s knockout of Jacare Souza from the bottom for Holland seems something entirely unfamiliar.

It’s five straight for the Travis Lutter Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and what a statement to make against someone of Jacare’s stature.

Starting the opening exchange with a wild, winging overhand, Holland was taken down by the former Strikeforce middleweight best, before scrambling back to guard and unleashing some massive elbows. Creating some separation on the feet, Jacare managed to push Holland back to the fence, with the latter again landing some nasty elbows.

Speaking with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion, Jacare, Holland joked before creating some space, before landing a massive right hand from the bottom, before following up with a barrage of strikes to a severly rocked Souza.

Immediately afterward, Holland claimed he had no plans to leave Las Vegas — calling for a stunning December 19th. turnaround against fellow standout, Khamzat Chimaev.

Below, check out the highlights from Holland’s incredible finish of grappling royalty, Jacare.

Kevin Holland has revealed he was planning to call out Yoel Romero after his fight against Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza at UFC 256.

Unfortunately, that plan is now off the table after it was revealed Romero has been released from his UFC contract last week.

The 43-year-old Cuban favourite last featured at UFC 248 in March, dropping a unanimous decision defeat to current 185-pound titleholder, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya, in a largely uneventful main event clash. Prior to that Romero dropped back-to-back razor thin decision defeats to Paulo Costa and Robert Whittaker.

A shocked MMA community reacted angrily to the cutting of Romero, but UFC president Dana White pointed to the long-time middleweight contenders current record and age as factors, he said.

“We’re going to go through some serious cuts here at the end of the year… And Yoel has lost 4 of his last 5, he’s 44 years old and our roster is very inflated right now.”

Ahead of his fight with Souza, Holland expressed his shock and sadness to see Romero cut – especially as he planned to call out the Cuban if he gets by ‘Jacare’ on Saturday night.

“Yeah, that really sucks that Yoel Romero’s done,” Holland told Submission Radio. “That was actually the fight that I was going to call out next. But if he’s gone, he’s gone. Props to him. Have fun in your next career. By the time I get out of the UFC, I’ll be old too and I won’t want to fight no more. So, I plan on finishing my career here. So, if he’s done, he’s done. If he’s going somewhere else, best of luck in his career. Props to him. He’s a legend. I just want to simply fight some legends, that’s all there is too it. And plus, that get me closer to a BMF-type title fight, huh? So, I’m just searching for those types of things, fun, fun fights.”

Who do you think Kevin Holland should call out if he beats ‘Jacare’ at UFC 256?

Hermansson

Jack Hermansson further proved how game a fighter he is.

Hermansson was set to take on Darren Till in a middleweight headliner on December 5. However, Till was injured and had to withdraw leaving “The Joker” without an opponent.

Kevin Holland later stepped up to the plate and was set to fight Hermansson as a short-notice replacement. However, he recently tested positive for COVID-19 which meant he had to pull out of the fight as well.

Luckily for Hermansson, Marvin Vettori stepped up this time and he will still be able to compete on December 5.

Despite now having to prepare for a third opponent, there was no way Hermansson was not going to fight on that date as his reaction to the Holland news and subsequent approval of Vettori was caught on camera.

“No, no, no, no, no. (Expletives). Ugh. (Expletives). Alright. Alright. Yup. But let’s do it. Let’s do it. I haven’t traveled here not to fight so let’s do it. Yeah. We’re in. We’re in. Sounds good. Let’s do it,” Hermansson said. “Kevin Holland got COVID so he’s out of the fight which is very bad news. The good news is that Marvin Vettori is stepping in.”

While fighters who step up on short notice deserve credit, fighters like Rafael dos Anjos and Hermansson who are willing to keep fighting despite having prepared for other opponents also deserve as much credit.

And as can be seen in the video, Hermansson had no objections whatsoever to fighting a completely new opponent in Vettori.

Hermansson is coming off a first-round submission win over Kelvin Gastelum in July and has won six of his last seven outings overall. Another win could potentially put him in a number one contender fight as he looks to earn a first-ever middleweight title shot.

What do you make of Hermansson agreeing to a third opponent in Vettori?
