Of all the ways to lose in the UFC Octagon, one of the rarest and indeed most embarrassing is when a fighter somehow manages to knock themselves out.

Given all the preparation that goes into getting ready for a fight, from the grueling grind of cardio workouts, the endless rounds of sparring, the hours spent carefully crafting a gameplan for an opponent, and the sleepless nights spent envisioning all the possible ways the fight could play out, it must be a particularly bitter pill to swallow to know that, in the end, they themselves inadvertently proved to be their own worst enemies.

In this article we’ll take a look back at several classic examples of these freak occurrences in the UFC over the years, including instances where the fighter didn’t even make it to the octagon before delivering the knockout blow that would take them out of the fight.

Before the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) took over the majority of MMA, the world’s foremost promotion had some serious competition in the form of PRIDE FC.

The Japan-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization offered combat sports in its truest form before it became mainstream on the heels of Zuffa’s massive efforts. In 2007, PRIDE was actually absorbed by UFC.

Nonetheless, the promotion was the launching pad to countless MMA legends, champions, physical dynamos, and more. It gave us transcendent combat stars like “The Last Emperor,” “Minotauro,” and “The Axe Murderer.” If not for PRIDE, some of these historic figures would have never burst onto the international scene.

To celebrate the past and pay tribute to PRIDE, we take a look back at the 10 best fights in organizational history. Enjoy.

It’s hard to describe the feeling when someone you idolise passes away. Many of us are waking this morning to experience that very raw emotion, and we can only imagine how much loss and sorrow the family of Kevin Randleman are feeling right now. The former UFC heavyweight champion brought explosiveness and excitement to the ring or cage every time he fought, and his passing away at only 44 years old has rocked the MMA community.

Read some of the most touching tributes and reactions to ‘The Monster’ here:

Randy “The Natural” Couture‘s tribute to Kevin Randleman:

“Kevin my friend,

My sorrows swell and my heart sinks as the sun sets on our journey. I embrace the memories of our time together in laughter, in the heat of combat, and in tears as we stumbled through this world. I never dreamed that I would sit alone decades later in reflection at the adventures we shared. I see your swagger and smile, eyes twinkle with devious delight as you bounded high in intimidating preparation for battle always aware that all eyes were on you. Magnetic and powerful you seemed to glow with anticipation at what the struggle would bring. You showed me the reward of daily toil and the joys of reckless abandon. You lived a life unimagined by most with a philosophy of someone who seemed to know both sides of the coin. We battled vicious demons, some side by side, and reveled in the victories always willing to share the spoils with any one in need. This life you led laid open an example of happiness and freedom for countless souls including mine that we would never have had the strength or courage to face on our own. We went willingly with you and witnessed mercy, compassion, and the miracle that was you to all those you touched and wisdom through your falls. There is no explanation, excuse, or apology for your life because it requires none! The good was great, the bad was -well bad. It was 100% Kevin and I’am blessed to have shared it. See you on the other side. “

It’s a sad day for the mixed martial arts (MMA) community to say the least, as reports have surfaced indicating that former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman has passed away at the age of 44.

Bleacher Report’s Jeremy Botter confirmed the unfortunate news on his twitter account, claiming that Randleman was transported to the hospital with a case of pneumonia, but ended up suffering heart failure.

Known as “The Monster”, Randleman was just that, possessing an NCAA division I wrestling background that he often used to simply rag doll his opponents, treating fans to some of the best slams in sport history.

Although his record stands at 17-16, “The Monster” is without question a pioneer, and an impactful figure on the sport of mixed martial arts.

He took on the best of his generation including the likes of Bas Rutten, Randy “The Natural” Couture, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Mirko Filipovic, whom he knocked out in 2004, Fedor Emelianenko, and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

His heavyweight championship victory came over Pete Williams at UFC 23 in November 1999, and he would go on to defend the strap one time against Pedro Rizzo at UFC 26 in June 2000.

Losing nine of his last 11 bouts forced “The Monster” to finally hang up his gloves in 2011, but his physical prowess inside of the cage and his long lasting legacy will truly be remembered forever.

What is your favorite moment from Randleman’s influential and illustrious career?
