Sitting atop two divisions after UFC 205 is Conor McGregor, the man everyone is talking about. Heading in to the UFC’s historic first event in New York, questions about stripping McGregor’s featherweight title were being raised. Frustrated fans and contenders from both 145 and 155 pounds questioned the reasons behind the Irishman’s lightweight title shot. Providing his own record-breaking moment in the main event, McGregor crumbled Eddie Alvarez and took the belt.

The incredible win for ‘The Notorious’ opened doors to fights not only at feather and lightweight, but also with Tyron Woodley at welterweight. Again the point has been raised about stripping McGregor, but the Irish striker insists he’ll defend both belts. Also competing and winning in dominant fashion on the New York pay-per-view was Khabib Nurmagomedov. The undefeated lightweight prospect steamrolled Michael Johnson, making a clear statement about his placement in the title race.

Not Friends Anymore

Although they had been pictured together in this friendly snapshot at UFC 178, there’s now an obvious beef between ‘The Eagle’ and McGregor. During a video released before UFC 205, McGregor and Nurmagomedov could be seen getting heated before the weigh-ins. The dominant lightweight grappler had also voiced his displeasure with ‘The Notorious’ facing Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, and his post-fight speech was a clear challenge to the newly minted two-weight boss:

“I want to stay humble,’ Nurmagomedov said. ‘But I have to talk because the other guys talk too much. I understand the crazy power the UFC PR machine has. (McGregor), at the beginning of the year he tapped like a chicken but at the end of the year he is fighting for the title. Crazy. I want to fight your chicken. Let’s go. Let’s go with your chicken.”

McGregor, never one to stay quiet, responded during his bespoke UFC 205 post-fight presser:

McGregor’s Response

Talking after his emphatic win this weekend, Conor McGregor says he’s unsure of fighting someone like Khabib Nurmagomedov. Pointing out his recent history of pulling out of fights, ‘The Notorious’ says he wants an opponent who will ‘show up.’ As per MMAFighting.com:

“He’s fought once in eight years,” McGregor said. “He ain’t fight too frequent for my liking. For me to commit to something like that, I need to see solid proof that people are gonna show up and he’s a consistent pull-out merchant. He had a good performance tonight. Fair play to him. I need to see active, to see activity. I need to see consistency.”

If you want me to come and change your life, you want me to come pick you, you better have some damn reasons for me to do that. I feel good at all of them,” McGregor said. “I’m dominating them. I own the featherweight division. I’m dominating the 155 now. At 170? I have no problem going to 170. I’m sizing them up all week saying, ‘They’re not on my level, either.’”

Other Options

Facing Conor McGregor now are a number of interesting options. After Tony Ferguson defeated Rafael dos Anjos, ‘El Cucuy’ propelled himself to the top of the rankings at lightweight. Including ‘The Eagle,’ that’s two viable contenders at 155 pounds. Looking at featherweight, an obvious unification match with Jose Aldo beckons, or of course the beef with Woodley at 170, which the welterweight champ has said he’s happy to act on. Now that it looks like McGregor isn’t retiring, who should he fight next?

Surrounding the massive UFC 205 event is an air of change, some say for better, and others for worse. Once again Conor McGregor is at the front of this hot debate. Facing Eddie Alvarez in his attempt at the Philadelphia slugger’s lightweight belt, ‘The Notorious’ is causing all kinds of havoc. Yet to defend the featherweight title, and receiving a shot at the belt in his first 155-pound belt, McGregor has stirred up the argument of money over rankings all over again. When it comes to the decision-making behind the UFC 205 main event, few can deny it is unabashed.

Alvarez vs. McGregor was fiercely contested by the contenders of the lightweight division, none more so than Khabib Nurmagomedov. Undefeated in his career at 23-0 (7-0 UFC), ‘The Eagle’ protested vehemently against McGregor’s title shot. Eventually finding himself matched against Michael Johnson on the UFC 205 prelims, Nurmagomedov made it clear it was title shot or bust if he beats Johnson. Although he won’t get a crack at the belt on November 12, Khabib reportedly made a huge dent in Alvarez’s, but for mare so McGregor’s pay for UFC 205.

Eagle Leverage

According to a report on Match TV, via Bloody Elbow, Nurmagomedov signing two contracts to fight Alvarez was simply a ploy by the UFC to lower both men’s salaries for the event. Khabib’s father says the promotion used the fear of fighting his son as leverage to lower the payout required on November 12:

“By sending a contract to Khabib, the UFC has reduced the overall cost of UFC 205 by $4 million dollars. According to rumors, McGregor wanted to fight for six or seven million, and Alvarez for one million. At this point, Khabib was sent two contracts and he signed them. Alvarez with McGregor then calmed down because nobody wanted to fight Khabib. As a result, Alvarez will earn $500,000 and McGregor around $3.5 million. There are some bonuses, but the fact is that they have halved the fees. That’s for sure. Khabib was offered $100,000 compensation for the cancelled fight. He refused, and said: ‘Give me the opportunity to fight the best.’ On the same evening, he was offered a fight with Michael Johnson for the same fee.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Kick In The Teeth

If true, this means the prospect of fighting Nurmagomedov lowered Alvarez from $1 million to $500K, and McGregor from $7 million (approx) to $4 million. The brash Irishman mocked Alvarez for not renegotiating his contract before UFC 205, but ‘he Silent Assassin’ claimed it was too easy a fight to pass up on.

One day, perhaps soon, someone is going to have to give Khabib Nurmagomedova title shot. When that finally happens, will the undefeated Sambo master rag-doll his way to title glory?

UFC 205 has been subject to so many twists and turns in the recent weeks. Following wide-spread rumours of a main event between Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez, things started to get a little confusing. Reported as still injured from UFC 202, McGregor’s part in the New York debut for the UFC was now in question. Following that report, number one contender Khabib Nurmagomedov claimed he would be fighting Alvarez. News then broke that the featherweight champ was in fact uninjured, and still aiming to fight at UFC 205.

Posting pictures of two signed bout agreements on Twitter, ‘The Eagle’ furthered reports that he’d receive the next lightweight title fight. ‘The Silent Assassin’ added to the mix of news by stating he still wanted to fight McGregor. There’s been a number of bouts confirmed for UFC 205 so far, and they are as follows:

Who’s Missing?

UFC welterweight championship: Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson

UFC Strawweight championship: Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz

Women’s bantamweight: Miesha Tate vs. Raquel Pennington

Welterweight: Kelvin Gastelum vs. Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone

Featherweight: Frankie Edgar vs. Jeremy ‘Lil Heathen’ Stephens

Middleweight: Rashad Evans vs. Tim Kennedy

Lightweight: Thiago Alves vs. Jim Miller

Middleweight: Tim Boetsch vs. Rafael Natal

Woman’s bantamweight: Liz Carmouche vs. Katlyn Chookagian

There’s an announcement set for tomorrow (September 27, 2016) but for the moment, the big names in the recent debate are missing.

Let’s take a look at three HUGE possibilities for UFC 205’s main event…

Eddie Alvarez vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov

After two years away from fighting due to multiple injuries, ‘The Eagle’ returned in April of this year. Solidifying his spot as number one lightweight contender, Nurmagomedov defeated Tony Ferguson’s late replacement Darrell Horcher by submission.

Why would this fight be so huge? Aside from it placing rankings above popularity and money, Nurmagomedov is possibly the most dominant lightweight this division has ever seen.

‘The Eagle’ has never lost a round, and comes to completely shut out his opponents. Undefeated at 23-0, many feel Khabib presents the biggest possible challenge to Eddie Alvarez’s lightweight championship. That’s a very real and intriguing prospect. Also worth considering is that ‘RDA’ appeared to be a very dominating force, but ‘the dog’ in Alvarez put that beast to sleep in no time.

MMA: UFC Fight Night-Dos Anjos vs Alvarez

Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor

Swaying away from the rankings, this scrap has all the makings of a pay-per-view record breaker. That said, as fans and pundits, PPV records aren’t exactly paramount, at least not for the purists. But, and it’s a big one, many are interested to see how ‘The Notorious’ will do at 155 pounds. Don’t think for one minute the UFC won’t book this fight either, as UFC 196 was originally meant to feature Rafael dos Anjos against the Irish star for the lightweight belt.

Should McGregor fight his way through the top 10 for a title fight at 155? Many would argue yes, but does this mean we won’t tune in if Alavarez vs. McGregor is announced as the UFC 205 main event?

Back to rankings…

ALdoMcGregorPre-FighbtPresserStaredown

Conor McGregor vs. Jose Aldo 2

This fight has years of history. After sharing 18 months worth of beef, it took just 13 seconds for Conor McGregor to dethrone Jose Aldo. Claiming the formerly dominant Brazilian’s 145-pound strap, ‘The Notorious’ has spent the last two fights at 170 pounds against Nate Diaz. Many fans and the crop of irate featherweights are calling for McGregor to defend or vacate, so what if it’s the former?

Aldo never really got going in their first meeting, that’s not to say he would in a rematch, but he looked on fire against Frankie Edgar at UFC 200. Now, with the interim strap in hand, the tables have turned on McGregor and Aldo’s rivalry. The Irish star has a junior champion in his midst, and who wouldn’t want to see this fight in the UFC 205 main event?
