Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor received praise from UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier for his star power.
In a recent episode of the ESPN show ‘DC & RC’, Cormier spoke about how the Irish star elevates his opponents’ stock, including his long-time teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov.
“He has elevated two of my best friends. Two of the guys that I love, that I appreciate in this sport more than anyone. He has elevated Khabib (Nurmagomedov) to a megastar, and he has elevated Dustin Poirier to a level of stardom that Dustin never could’ve imagined getting before. So not only does he help himself, he helps the guys that he shares the octagon with – especially the ones that can beat him.” (h/t BJPenn.com)
Conor McGregor Has Been Involved in Rivalries Against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier
McGregor (22-6) was involved in a heated rivalry with Nurmagomedov in 2018 which elevated “The Eagle’s” star power. At UFC 229, the Dagestan, Russia native successfully defended the lightweight title against McGregor by fourth-round submission.
Since then, Nurmagomedov has become one of the greatest UFC lightweights of all-time. Before retiring in Oct. 2020, Nurmagomedov defended the 155-pound title three times against McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, respectively.
McGregor, who is expected to fight Michael Chandler later this year, has gone 1-2 since his fight with Nurmagomedov, with back-to-back losses to Poirier.
The “Notorious” last fought in July 2021 at UFC 264, where he suffered a TKO by doctor stoppage to Poirier. He has been rehabbing his injury with the goal of returning to action soon.
McGregor’s rivalries with Nurmagomedov and Poirier have resulted in some of the best-selling pay-per-view fights in U.S. history.
According to Insider, McGregor versus Nurmagomedov earned 2.5 million PPV buys while McGregor versus Poirier II and III earned a combined 3.104 million buys.

Former interim UFC welterweight champion, Colby Covington has claimed that former undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov avoided a long-speculated move to the 170lbs division – due to his own presence at the weight class.
Covington, the current #2 ranked welterweight contender, has yet to return to active competition since March of last year, defeating arch-rival, Jorge Masvidal in a one-sided unanimous decision victory in the main event of UFC 272.
As for Khabib, the undefeated, 29-0 former undisputed lightweight champion, called time on his own mixed martial arts career back in October 2020, bowing out of the sport following a successful lightweight title unification win against former interim champion, Justin Gaethje.
Colby Covington claimed his presence swayed Khabib Nurmagomedov from a welterweight move
Linked with a move to the welterweight ranks following his ascension to the throne back in 2018, Khabib never made the move to 170lbs. And Clovis native, Covington has theorised that his rise through the ranks during Khabib’s title run at lightweight forced the Dagestan native against a weight class leap.
“He (Khabib Nurmagomedov) never came to 170 [pounds], because the man’s here,” Colby Covington said during an interview with MyMMANews. “He doesn’t wanna fight the man. He knew the man that had a great style for him, the guy that was way more well-rounded, could stuff his takedowns, being in his face and punch, and putting volume on him, and doesn’t break under cardio.”
“Like, that’s what I do best,” Colby Covington explained. “I would’ve walked him down. So, him and (Islam) Makhachev need to shut their f*cking mouths. They’re all talk and no walk unlike myself.”
Arriving in London last week as an official backup to the UFC 286 welterweight title headliner between champion, Leon Edwards, and past opponent, Kamaru Usman, Covington successfully made weight on Friday, however, his services were not required by the promotion on short-notice.

Former undisputed UFC lightweight and featherweight champion, Conor McGregor unleashed an expletive-filled tirade on his official Twitter account overnight – taking aim at five prominent mixed martial arts head coaches, and claiming himself and his head coach, John Kavanagh of Straight Blast Gym, had created a system to defeat the likes of past-foe, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion, is expected to return to welterweight waters in his UFC comeback later this year.
Sharing a slew of tweets last night from his official Twitter account, McGregor took aim at the likes of Trevor Wittman, Javier Mendez, and Firas Zahabi, as well as once more pointing to the above-mentioned, Nurmagomedov’s retirement during a back-and-forth with the Russian’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz.
“Firaz Zihabi (sic) is a little douchebag,” Conor McGregor tweeted. “Trevor Wittman is a pad man. Javier Mendez is a fat a*se lick kick boxer. Mike Brown is a smelly pr*ck. Greg Jackson got caught up, the system of coach [John] Kavanagh is now shining thru (sic). In years to come, the world will know what we have been at. It’s beginning to bare fruit. If you want to train, train at SBG Ireland with Kav, and me. We are a fight factory akin to butter churning.”
“Hey, sh*t stain on the game,” Conor McGregor replied to Ali Abdelaziz. “I’m talking as of now it is beginning to bare fruit. We bat their system of fighting on TUF. It’s locked down. It’s no wonder sh*t pants {Khabib Nurmagomedov} scurried. There’s no competing now. The head of the style is too fat a b*tch and afraid to compete again. So we win. You can’t compete with us. Watching and witness, you rat b*stard.”
Sidelined since July 2021, McGregor most recently headlined UFC 264 against Dustin Poirier, fracturing his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat.
Tony Ferguson alleges that Khabib Nurmagomedov and his former manager Ali Abdelaziz owe him a large amount of money from a business wrongdoing. Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov may have never gotten the chance to settle their rivalry inside the octagon, but the animosity between the two remains strong. In their primes, a fight between the two would have been an enthralling display of mixed martial arts competition, but sadly this matchup never came to fruition.
Tony Ferguson Says Khabib and Ali Owes Him More than Half a Million Dollars
Via Twitter, Ferguson wrote a colorfully worded post claiming Khabib and Ali’s wrongdoings on a business deal that went south. While these allegations are serious, the specific details of the situation have not been disclosed.
What Could Have Been Between Khabib and Tony
During their primes, Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov were on a tear, just dominating every opponent in front of them. The two were set numerous times to settle the score in the UFC Lightweight division, but it turns out the matchup was never meant to be.
Three separate fight cancellations ended the possibility of the two matching up, and thus each fighter went on different journeys. Since Tony Ferguson’s 2019 victory over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, he has lost five fights in a row, and it’s now clear that Tony’s title aspirations are a thing of the past. Khabib Nurmagomedov ended his MMA career on a high note, retaining his UFC Lightweight title over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in 2020.
While Ferguson and Nurmagomedov never had the chance to settle their rivalry inside the cage, this new claim by Tony Ferguson re-ignites a heated rivalry from their past.

Ahead of his UFC 285 heavyweight showdown against Ciryl Gane, ‘Bones’ Jones spoke in an interview with RMC Sport. The US-born athlete listed his top five greatest of all-time MMA fighters. Jones explained:
“My top five, let me see here. If I am allowed, I’d say myself. Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Jose Aldo. Jose Aldo, those are my favorites at least.” [Transcript courtesy of BJ Penn]
Jon Jones discusses Khabib Nurmagomedov
Jon Jones sounds as though he has changed his tune when it comes to the undefeated former lightweight world champion Nurmagomedov. In 2020, Jones discussed the Dagestani-born athlete. Jones said:
“I’m talking to all you Khabib fans out there. 15 world titles to your guy’s 4? And, you guys are really talking about who’s the best fighter ever? You guys are joking, right? 15 to 4. Are you guys’ kidding me? … The only person that could possibly come back and challenge my record and what I’ve done in the UFC is possibly Georges St-Pierre.”
However, since 2020, Jones may have come around to respecting the game of Nurmagomedov. On the former lightweight champion in 2022, ‘Bones’ recently said:
“I love what Khabib represents. We’ve had our differences in the past, I’ve made some quotes about him. But there’s never really been a real beef. I love the way he carries himself as a Muslim, I love the way he represents his country. I love the businessman that he is. He just seems like a stand-up guy, gives back to others. He’s a stand-up guy, an admirable man. I appreciate his existence.”
