Top-ranked UFC lightweight Tony Ferguson may finally have a fight in the works, and for the first time in what seems like years (even though that’s not the case), it’s not against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Yesterday, Ariel Helwani revealed during The MMA Hour (via FanSided) that the UFC is targeting Ferguson vs. No. 7 Kevin Lee for October 7’s UFC 216. The fight has not been made official for the event from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as of yet.

If it is made official, it would mark somewhat of a departure from at least what seemed like would happen, which was the promotion re-signing Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson for an unprecedented fourth time, especially with the two top 155-pound foes waging verbal warfare on social media as of late.

But as Ferguson so bluntly put it (at least in his words), Nurmagomedov is still not physically ready to fight ‘El Cucuy’ even seven months after he was forced out of their interim title bout at March’s UFC 209 when he depleted his body attempting to make 155 pounds. In the months since, Ferguson, who is currently riding a division-best nine-fight win streak, was linked to a rivalry with fan favorite Nate Diaz, and also seen on several media outlets trying to promote himself, but no one has been willing to step up and fight him.

That is, until now if we’re to believe Lee is willing to fight him, which wouldn’t be surprising given their beef that arose on live TV after Lee’s controversial submission win over Michael Chiesa this June, where ‘El Cucuy’ was serving as a live television analyst on FOX Sports 1. The quickly surging Lee has won five in a row and appears to be on the cusp of true title contention, speculation that will become fact if he faces and defeats Ferguson this fall.

There’s no word if an interim title will be on the line as current champ Conor McGregor faces Floyd Mayweather in his pro boxing bout in less than two weeks, but with rumors surfacing “The Notorious” may still fight in the octagon in 2017, that seems unlikely at this point.

Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov continue to lobby for, what would be a hardcore mixed martial arts (MMA) fans’ dream match, a potential bout against one another.

The pair have been scheduled to fight multiple times, however, each instance the bout seems to fall through. Most recently, Ferguson and Nurmagomedov were scheduled to co-main event the UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) this past March, however, after a disastrous weight cut for “The Eagle,” he was hospitalized and forced off the card. Neither man has yet to compete since the fight’s cancellation.

Currently, division champ Conor McGregor is embroiled in a superfight with undefeated legend Floyd Mayweather in the boxing world, thus leaving the 155-pound division’s championship responsibilities open for the time being.

For the past few weeks both “El Cucuy” and “The Eagle” have been campaigning hard to get on the stacked UFC 217 PPV card, which is expected to be headlined by a middleweight title bout between division champ Michael Bisping and former welterweight king Georges St-Pierre.

It would be a heck of an addition to the card and would give fight fans a bout they’ve been waiting to see for quite some time. Recently, Ferguson took to Instagram to post a video of himself playing UFC 2 with his own character fighting against his Russian adversary. Ferguson won the simulation via Twister submission and recorded the video, posting it while shouting “F*ck you, Khabib.”

Check it out here below:

UFC 217 will go down live on PPV from Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 4, 2017. Do you expect to see Ferguson and Nurmagomedov finally clash on the card?

The war of words has continued between lightweight contenders Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Even though they have been trash talking each other for months, it’s nice to see that they haven’t run out of creativity yet.

If you recall, the UFC has attempted to book these two fighters against each other a few times. They were supposed to meet at UFC 209 earlier this year, but Nurmagomedov had a difficult weight cut that resulted in him being placed in the hospital and had the interim title fight removed from the card.

At first, Ferguson took the classy route, but he hasn’t turned away from many chances to take jabs at Nurmagomedov’s weight status. This leads us to him sharing this crafty photo on his official Facebook page:

Hey Fathead @Khabib_Nurmagomedov It's #TiramisuTuesday Make Sure To Eat Three 4 Me. I Hope USADA Doesn't Test For…

Posted by Tony "El Cucuy" Ferguson on Wednesday, August 9, 2017

They then took their trash talk to Twitter. As seen below, Nurmagomedov said he was waiting for the fellow contender in New York. This has led to speculation that the fight will take place at UFC 217 at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, November 4th, which will be headlined by a middleweight title bout between current champion Michael Bisping and former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

Ferguson has come out and claimed that a possible matchup had already been turned down by Nurmagomedov’s manager. Ferguson believes that there was no need for a third party to speak on his behalf. Nurmagomedov reiterated his desire for the meeting.

It seems like it just a situation where fight fans will have to sit back and wait in order to find out of this fight will ever actually take place.

It wasn’t too long ago that UFC President Dana White claimed his lightweight champion, Conor McGregor, wanted to fight No. 1-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov in his own backyard of Russia.

Now, it appears the Irishman is doubling down on those claims as he prepares to step into the boxing ring for the first time in his professional fighting career against, arguably, the greatest of all time in Floyd Mayweather. McGregor is expected to take on the 49-0 “Money” from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada next month (Sat. August 26, 2017) on Showtime pay-per-view (PPV).

During the Mayweather vs. McGregor World Tour, the heavy-handed Irishman was asked if the rumors about him wanting “The Eagle” in Russia were true, to which he confirmed they were (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“That’s certainly an option that I’m exploring. That would be a spectacle. It’d be like something out of Rocky. I suppose this whole story is like a Rocky story, right? So why not face a man in his home country, and a crazy place like Russia. It’s certainly something I’d like to do. There’s a couple of options on the table so let’s see what unfolds.”

There has been plenty of speculation that “The Notorious One” will walk away from the combat sports world after making the biggest payday of his life against Mayweather. McGregor silenced those rumors as well, claiming he won’t suffer a scratch in his fight against the undefeated legend and will take some time to brush up on his wrestling and jiu-jitsu before returning to the Octagon again:

“I believe so. I believe I’ll come out of this fight without a scratch. [Take] a couple weeks to refresh my jiu-jitsu and my wrestling – not that I’ve stopped training that either, I’ve still kept up on that, just less – and then we’ll see what happens.”
