In April this year, Khamzat Chimaev crashed his brand new Mercedes SUV. This wasn’t just any Mercedes, but one reportedly gifted to Khamzat by a man who’s currently under US sanctions for a slew of human rights abuses—Ramzan Kadyrov, the all-powerful leader of Chechnya.

A month earlier, it was Kadyrov who persuaded (or more likely pressured) Chechen-born Chimaev to rethink his retirement from MMA following a near-death battle with COVID-19. The 27-year-old, after all, had become the pride of Chechnya—a tiny Russian republic in the North Caucasus over which Kadyrov rules with an iron fist. And the Mercedes was just a little enticement from the warlord, and quite possibly, like an offer from a Mafia don, one Khamzat couldn’t refuse.

For most people, reciprocating a gift from your nation’s iron-fisted ruler by crashing it isn’t the smartest move. But for Chimaev, who became a UFC fan favorite last year for his regularly stated imperative to “smash everybody,” it almost seems poetic that he did the same to his Mercedes. And besides, Kadyrov simply bought him an even better Ferrari a month later.

But Kadyrov—who is under US sanctions for committing bloody anti-gay purges, extra-judicial killings, and the torture of his citizens—isn’t doling out luxury vehicles simply because he’s filled with the milk of human kindness. It’s more than likely he expects a return on investment from Khamzat in the form of his continued rise through the UFC ranks. Because “Borz” isn’t just his dear leader’s favorite fighter, but also his latest puppet to help distract from the crimes of his regime.

Ramzan Kadyrov: The World’s Sleaziest Fight Promoter

Mix the sociopathic tendencies of Saddam Hussein with the fight game ambitions of Dana White, and you have Ramzan Kadyrov, a despot who rules Chechnya as his personal fiefdom in between running his own MMA promotion, Absolute Championship Akhmat (ACA) —a franchise that has generated outrage for hosting bouts between children

For Kadyrov, involving himself in MMA is part of a strategy to “sportswash” his many heinous crimes against humanity. ACA, which has held over 150 MMA events across the globe, is one such avenue through which Kadyrov curates his public image as a sports-loving, hyper-masculine, yet benevolent leader. So too via his public flirtations with some of the UFC’s and boxing’s biggest stars.

In 2015, Chris Weidman, Fabricio Werdum, and Frank Mir visited Chechnya as honored guests of Kadyrov to attend the inaugural ACA event. Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson have also hung out with and snapped selfies with Kadyrov. And in late 2020, even Kamaru Usman accepted an invitation from the warlord to train at his Akhmat MMA facilities in Chechnya. Video shows the welterweight champ hanging out with Kadyrov’s sons after a sparring session, and even chanting the dictator’s slogan. Renzo Gracie, Alexander Gustafsson, Frankie Edgar, and Khabib Nurmagomedov have also experienced the red carpet treatment from Kadyrov.

Kadyrov’s tentacles run deep through the MMA world. With his Akhmat MMA Fight Club, the dictator runs a network of training facilities across many former Soviet states, and those in Chechnya not only produce a long line of talent for Kadyrov’s MMA promotion, but also foot soldiers for his army. Akhmat MMA Fight Club is, after all, run by the commander of Chechnya’s special forces.

Some Akhmat MMA graduates have even made it to the UFC, most notably light heavyweight rising star Magomed Ankalaev, who’s set to face Volkan Oezdimir at UFC 267 this weekend. Managing these fighters through a tight working relationship with Kadyrov is Ali Abdelaziz. The Dominance MMA president has since 2015 represented a number of UFC fighters who were developed through Kadyrov’s Akhmat MMA gyms, including Magomed Bibulatov, Abdul-Kerim Edilov, Ruslan Magomedov, in addition to those currently on the UFC roster, Said Nurmagomedov, Maxim Grishin, and Ankalaev.

Kadyrov Mayweather

Abdelaziz, like many others profiting from their relationship with Kadyrov, has casually turned a blind eye to the warlord’s many human rights violations. In a 2019 interview with Luke Thomas, the MMA manager to the stars brushed off media coverage of Kadyrov’s anti-gay purges as simply fake news.

“A lot of people say a lot of shit. Right? I don’t know what this man in Chechnya thinks about gay, not gay,” Abdelaziz said. “But the whole thing is, I don’t know nothing about it, because I don’t believe anything the media says. I don’t see it with my eyes, I don’t believe it.”

Where Abelaziz’s business ethics failed to prevent him from pursuing commercial interests with Kadyrov, the US sanctions imposed late last year have most likely succeeded.

Kadyrov and Khabib: A Complicated Relationship

Perhaps the greatest PR strategy for a murderous dictator like Kadyrov is to latch onto the coattails of UFC stars from the North Caucasus region. For years, the Chechen strongman has attempted to court Khabib Nurmagomedov, who hails from neighboring Dagestan, into his good graces.

The former lightweight champ has received the full “dictator’s plaything” treatment from Kadyrov. He’s been invited to host training seminars at Kadyrov’s Akhmat gym and appear as a guest of honor at several of his MMA events. Khabib has also, like Chimaev, been lavished with luxury cars and even been anointed an honorary citizen of Chechnya.

Kadyrov Khabib Nurmagomedov

But Khabib and Kadyrov’s relationship is one that’s been complicated by the messy politics of the North Caucasus. In 2019, the dictator claimed that Dagestan’s national hero, Imam Shamil—who led the Caucasian resistance to Imperial Russia in the 1800s—also caused the “annihilation of the Chechen people.” This didn’t sit well with the people of Dagestan nor Khabib, who’s since largely steered clear of Kadyrov. The tyrant did, however, attend the funeral of Nurmagomedov’s father Abdulmanap last year, where footage showed him embracing the lightweight GOAT.

Khamzat Chimaev: Kadyrov’s Latest Plaything

Just as his relationship with Khabib was on the outs, in stepped another shiny new plaything to monopolize Kadyrov’s attention—Khamzat Chimaev.

Last year, when Chimaev announced himself as the UFC’s next rising star by achieving three wins in just 66 days, Kadyrov wasted no time in worming his way into the good graces of the Chechen-born Swede, labeling him a “true Chechen” in a congratulatory post on Russian social media. That Chimaev represents Sweden and has resided there since his teens matters little to Kadyrov.

“Regardless of the country in which he performs, Khamzat always remembers that he is, first of all, a Chechen, and strictly observes the traditions and customs of his people,” wrote Kadyrov.

Prior to achieving UFC fame, Chimaev had visited Kadyrov’s Akhmat MMA facility on numerous occasions, even hosting a training seminar for children. And since his breakout performances last year, “Borz” has well and truly taken Khabib’s place as his dear leader’s favorite fighter.

Kadyrov has of course showered him with lavish gifts. And like any third-world tyrant obsessed with projecting an image of machismo, has engaged in a sparring session with his 27-year-old compatriot.

These friendly gestures, however, seemingly carry with them weighty expectations for Chimaev. What Khabib Nurmagomedov had done for neighboring Dagestan, Chimaev was doing for Chechnya in 2020—smashing every opponent placed before him in the name of his beloved homeland. So when Khamzat announced his MMA retirement earlier this year, Kadyrov would have none of it. The tyrant was quick to “persuade” his favorite fighter into doing otherwise, even offering rehabilitation in Chechnya to speed his recovery.

“During our conversation, Chimaev realized how important his career is for every Chechen and promised to make every effort to recover as soon as possible,” Kadyrov wrote in an Instagram post. “In the near future, he will fly to the republic, where he will complete a rehabilitation course, hold a training camp, and start training.”

“And this means that Khamzat does not leave, HE REMAINS AND WILL FIGHT TO THE END!”

Kadyrov Khamzat Chimaev

It’s probably safe to say that while Khamzat was likely all-in on making his UFC return if he wasn’t, he’d be facing far more dire repercussions than simply no longer receiving luxury vehicles from Kadyrov.

Yes, Chimaev resides in Sweden. But he no doubt has family in Chechnya, and international borders aren’t something that has deterred Kadyrov from exerting his power over Chechen expatriates, often with bloody results.

As “Borz” prepares to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 267 this weekend, it seems he’ll be fighting for more than just recapturing the form that saw him rise to prominence last year. And one man, from the confines of his opulent presidential palace in Grozny, will be watching closely.

Khamzat Chimaev is ready to continue his ascent up the welterweight rankings.

Khamzat Chimaev will be making his return to the Octagon at UFC 267 after a layoff. He has been absent from the UFC since the last time he fought which was September of 2020. Now that he is back in action, Chimaev isn’t going to stop until he works his way to a title shot. Speaking with BT Sports, Chimaev puts the whole division on notice.

“If I kill everybody, they have to give me title shot,” He said. “I’m gonna kill this guy and take the belt, doesn’t matter who [has] it. We’ll see.”

Over the past year, Chimaev has been dealing with some health issues. These issues stemmed from a bout of COVID-19 that took him out of two scheduled fights. The lingering effect took such a toll on him that he eventually retired from MMA. Thankfully he has made a recovery and is back on track.

Before his time away, Chimaev has one of the biggest rising stars in the UFC. He scored three huge wins in three months’ time, all finishes. His appearance on Fight Island in July of 2020 put him on the map and after his 17 second KO over Gerald Meerschaert he jumped into the ranking. The time away may have hurt his momentum, but Chimaev could easily pick back up where he left off with a big win over Li Jingliang on Oct.30.

Khamzat Chimaev Comments On His Relationship With Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khamzat Chimaev has blamed the media for creating a non-existent beef between him and the former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

‘The Wolf’ has been out of the Octagon for more than a year dealing with complications from catching COVID-19. During his time away from fighting, Chiamev appeared to take shots at his fellow Russian, Nurmagomedov.

It all started in May when Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov held an Instagram Live session and jabbed at Nurmagomedov for not wanting to appear under both the Russian and Dagestani flags.

Chimaev commented during the session that he would “smash” Nurmagomedov if he ever wanted to face him in the octagon and come out of retirement.

The Eagle’ attempted to downplay the comments made by Chiamev when he spoke to Russian media later that month.

“You’re only disappointed in someone when you expect a certain type of response from them,” Nurmagomedov said. “I never expected anything from this person. It’s his right, if he thinks what he said was necessary, let him write what he wants. Those questions are for him”

“Every person has their own opinion, so let it be. I did not watch the live broadcast of Ramzan Kadyrov, I just read what you [media] write. How did I feel? Nothing. The whole world is discussing me.”

In August, Chimaev claimed that his comment had been taken out of context.

“I answered to bullsh*t guy (during the Q&A), but nobody knows him,” Chimaev said. “It’s my [mistake) because I answer for him. He said like, ‘Khabib gonna smash you…’ If somebody say (sic) to you, ‘He gonna smash you,’ of course I’m gonna answer it like, ‘No, nobody gonna smash me. I’m gonna smash everybody. If you a (sic) real man, you have to think like that.”

Khamzat Chimaev Claims The Media Fabricated Beef Between Him & Khabib

Ahead of his return to action against Li Jingliang at UFC 267 this weekend, Chimaev again tried to downplay the perceived beef between him and Nurmagomedov by calling it a creation of the media.

“What happened with Khabib and with me? I didn’t talk with Khabib. How can I misunderstand something? People said, people, media take it this way (writing) bullsh*t things. Some guy writes to me some bullsh*t, I answered,” Chimaev told BT Sport. “It was not Khabib. Nothing happened. I didn’t talk with Khabib, he didn’t talk with me. I don’t know this guy. He doesn’t know me and everything is normal. He is Muslim. I am Muslim. We are brothers. And, if you have some problem, welcome.”

Do you think the beef between Khamzat Chiamev and Khabib Nurmagomedov was a media creation?

Khamzat Chimaev has come out and made statements about his true feelings about Conor McGregor.

The highly-touted prospect makes his return to the cage this weekend at UFC 267. He will face Li Jingliang in a welterweight contest a couple of fights before the first title bout on the card. This is Chimaev’s first fight in over a year since contracting a bad case of COVID-19 in that time.

While talking to the media in lead up to his fight this weekend, Chimaev was asked about his opinion on Conor McGregor. The soft-spoken Swed had this to say about the former double champ. (H/T rt.com)

“Yes, he achieved everything in the UFC, he was a champion in two weight classes,” said Chimaev. “This I respect with him. But it is impossible to respect him as a person.”

McGregor has been getting into trouble outside of the cage recently. He got into a scuffle with American rapper Machine Gun Kelly at the MTV VMA’s this summer. After that, he followed it up with an incident in Italy a couple of weeks ago. The Irishman allegedly punched an Italian DJ in the face during a party.

Chimaev burst onto the scene last year during the UFC’s run of ‘Fight Island’ shows. He won his debut in dominant fashion, finishing John Phillips with a D’arce choke in round 2. Chimaev then came back just 10 days later and defeated Rhys McKee via first-round TKO. He then knocked out Gerald Meerschaert in just 17 seconds at the UFC Apex in September of 2020.

UFC welterweight Khamzat Chimaev has detailed a physical altercation he had with ranked middleweight Kevin Holland in Las Vegas during a 2020 fight week.

The incident occurred at UFC Vegas 6 last August. The event saw Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis collide with veteran submission specialist Aleksei Oleinik in the main event, the successful return of former UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman, and another highlight-reel knockout for #3-ranked lightweight contender Beneil Dariush.

While none of the above names earned a bonus for their performances, one brutal prelim KO saw a rising contender leave with $50,000 and his second victory of 2020. In the sixth fight of the night, Holland faced Joaquin Buckley, who went on to record the KO of the Year two months later. In the third round, “Trailblazer” slept “New Mansa” with a vicious right hand.

The August 8 event also came just weeks after Chimaev had secured a record-breaking double on Fight Island. After making his debut on the Kattar vs. Ige card, where he destroyed John Phillips across just over six minutes, “Borz” made his second Octagon outing just 10 days later against Rhys McKee. In another Performance of the Night-worthy performance, the Chechen-born Swede recorded back-to-back finishes. Whilst Royce Gracie boasts the official record, Chimaev’s second win in Abu Dhabi marked a new UFC record for the fastest consecutive wins in modern UFC history.

Having broken onto the scene in emphatic fashion, Chimaev traveled to the UFC’s home base of Las Vegas, where he’d make his third appearance two months later. In the aftermath of UFC Vegas 6, the promotion’s first card since returning from the Middle East, it was reported that a scuffle had broken out between Chimaev and Holland.

During a recent interview with ZubaTV, Chimaev explained the details of the incident. Describing Holland as a “typical American,” the 27-year-old revealed what had caused him to confront “Big Mouth” in the fighter hotel.

“Holland. He commented something under a IG post about me… He wrote something like ‘it’s all good but where’s your mask? You can infect him.’ Something like that.” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “I came up to him in the hotel and asked, ‘What did you mean by that?’ He answered, ‘I don’t really remember but what about it?’ Or something like that. I grabbed his neck and pushed him away. Then, when people were holding me, he started blah blah blah. Typical American thing. Just talking without doing anything.” (h/t BJPenn.com)

Months after Holland’s Covid-related comment, Chimaev contracted a severe case of the rampant virus. The surging prospect, who has competed at both welterweight and middleweight, was scheduled to face top-five 170-pound contender Leon Edwards. However, Chimaev tested positive for COVID-19 in late November. The bout was canceled a further two times due to the then-ranked welterweight suffering from the long-lasting effects of the illness.

After over 13 months away from the cage, and even an apparent retirement announcement while he was battling Covid, Chimaev is finally set to return this weekend at UFC 267. Returning the Abu Dhabi, where he found immense success last summer, “Borz” will face #11-ranked welterweight Li “The Leech” Jingliang.

The Chinese 33-year-old will be making the Octagon walk for the first time since his thunderous knockout of Santiago Ponzinibbio in January this year. A setback against Neil Magny in 2020 is Jingliang’s only blemish in his last five fights.

Who do you think will have their hand raised at UFC 267, Khamzat Chimaev or Li Jingliang?

UFC welterweight Li Jingliang is confident of becoming the first blemish on the record of the returning Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 267.

Jingliang was last in action at UFC Fight Island 7. The event, which took place in January earlier this year, saw the Chinese contender spoil the return of Santiago Ponzinibbio. The Argentine, who’d previously only lost three times in 30 fights, was brutally knocked out by “The Leech” inside the opening round.

The victory marked an impressive rebound performance for Jingliang. The 33-year-old had lost to Neil Magny last March. His defeat against “The Haitian Sensation” is one of only two losses in his last 10 UFC appearances.

Having secured a Performance of the Night bonus in his last fight, as well as the #11 spot in the welterweight rankings, Jingliang will be looking to jump into the top 10 in his next outing.

Despite being up against one of 2020’s most hyped fighters, Jingliang is confident he can add another win to his record when he meets Chimaev this Saturday.

Speaking with SCMP MMA, “The Leech” discussed his upcoming matchup with “The Chechen Wolf.” Despite the 27-year-old’s dominance across his three UFC fights so far, Jingliang believes he will stop Chimaev on October 30.

“Khamzat is the new star of the UFC and we’ve all watched his past three fights. Everyone loves him. But I know exactly what I have to do and I will stop him.

“Khamzat is very impressive and everyone loves him,” Li continued. “But I have 100 percent confidence in myself. After I defeat him I can sit down with Dana White, and have a cup of Chinese tea and then we can talk about the future.” (h/t South China Morning Post)

And perhaps his post-fight conversation with the UFC president will cover the promotion’s potential return to his home country of China. With a victory over Chimaev, Jingliang will no doubt set up a big fight for himself in the months after, something which he hopes will go down in front of his own fans.

“Of course this is the dream; to bring the UFC back to China. Everyone wants that, not just the UFC. The Chinese fans have been waiting a long time now for a Chinese card and I want to be there fighting for them, for all my fans.”

Chimaev announced his arrival on MMA’s biggest stage on Fight Island last year. He destroyed John Phillips and Rhys McKee in the space of 10 days. A brutal knockout of Gerald Meerschaert two months later showed that he has power on the feet as well as dominant control on the ground.

Having missed the last 12 months due to a rough battle with COVID-19, which nearly saw him retire from the sport, the Chechen-born Swede will look to pick up from where he left off when he faces Jingliang at UFC 267.
