Luke Rockhold slams Khamzat Chimaev after UFC 279 shenanigans; ‘He kind of b*tched out’

Luke Rockhold

Former Strikeforce and UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold seemed to call it a career following his bizarrely entertaining bout with Paulo Costa and UFC 278 in August. However, there is a scenario where we could see Rockhold grace the Octagon once more according to the man himself.

While speaking with Kacper Rosolowski and Denis Shkuratov of Submission Radio, the one-time UFC world champion suggested that a big change in the middleweight division could inspire him to make another epic comeback.

“That Brazilian dude winning the title,” said Rockhold. “You’d have every wrestler in the f*cking game just chomping at the bit to get to that guy.”

That “Brazilian dude” Luke Rockhold is referring to is none other than Alex Pereira who will meet reigning middleweight champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 281 this November. Of course, even if Pereira scores the upset, Rockhold still has some reservations about returning to competition.

“Only thing is you gotta fight Robert Whittaker or some sh*t in between and it’s like, that’ll f*ckin’ hurt. Win or lose to Robert Whittaker, that sh*t’s gonna hurt. It’s gonna hurt. We’re gonna fight.”

Luke Rockhold Was Not Impressed With Khamzat Chimaev

Shifting gears, Luke Rockhold was asked about his thoughts on Khamzat Chimaev and his heavily rumored move to the middleweight division after weighing in 7.5 pounds over the welterweight limit for his previously scheduled main event against Nate Diaz at UFC 279.

“I’m just not impressed with Khamzat, how he carried himself and missing weight by that much tells us so much about a person, you know? It’s like the pressure is getting to you and know you got a guy on the ground you can’t completely control like Nate Diaz, that’s gonna pose a little bit of a threat. You can wrestle him, but there’s worrisome. There’s a lot on the line. There’s a lot of pressure and he kind of b*tched out from what I saw, straight up. Now he wants to jump up to middleweight.”

As for how he feels about Paulo Costa, Luke Rockhold was less than complimentary, saying point blank that he didn’t feel Costa was “that good” when the two squared off in August but does believe the former UFC title challenger will have an advantage on the feet in a potential showdown with the undefeated Chechnyan.

“Paulo’s not that good. Paulo’s not that good at wrestling, I was just tired. He’s got a good initial burst, but there wasn’t much there with good energy. Chimaev seems like he’s a decent-level guy in the game of wrestling and grappling so, yeah. I don’t know. If he can get a takedown and rides that b*tch, I got Chimaev. On the feet, I think he might be in some trouble.

“It’s a good fight, but I’d favor Paulo on the feet and I’d favor Chimaev on the ground.”

Dana White reflects on the original UFC 279 main event: ‘That wouldn’t have been good.’

Dana White

Dana White has admitted that the initial main event matchup involving Khamzat Chimaev, and Nate Diaz at UFC 279 would have ended poorly had it gone ahead.

Most MMA followers knew what the script was when the matchup was first announced to headline the UFC 279 card. Chimaev was expected to come in and destroy Diaz dampening the value behind the legend who had provided fans with many memorable moments during his UFC tenure.

Thankfully, this was not the case. Chimaev would ultimately miss weight by a staggering 7.5 pounds resulting in a reshuffling of the card allowing Nate Diaz to face fellow veteran, Tony Ferguson, in a much more fitting main event. In what many believed was an incident that saw the quality of the card improve even UFC president Dana White is beginning to share that sentiment.

Dana White speaks on the reality of what could have been with Nate Diaz vs Khamzat Chimaev

Speaking on The Action Junkeez Podcast, White admitted just how badly the original matchup for Diaz would have played out had it gone ahead.

“After you watch the fight, you realize Khamzat vs. Nate Diaz would have been f****** — that wouldn’t have been good. Khamzat, I know the fans got pissed at him for not making weight and everything else, but Jesus f****** Christ. What he went out and did to Kevin Holland — did you see Kevin Holland post the picture the other day that his eyes were all red from the f****** choke? I mean, holy s***.” Dana White said.

Chimaev has been able to steamroll his way through nearly all of his opponents since joining the promotion and given where the two men are at in their respective careers, you could have been fairly certain he would have continued this trend with Diaz.

Instead, the reshuffle saw Chimaev take on the rejuvenated Kevin Holland who had picked up two victories since dropping into the welterweight division. Despite now facing a tougher test in Holland, Chimaev was able to show his dominance and dispatch his opponent inside the first round. Now whilst many people expected ‘Borz’ to emerge victorious Dana White has shut down claims that people expected him to do it in such spectacular fashion.

“[People were saying,] ‘Yeah, that’s what I expected.’ No, you f****** didn’t,” White said. “If you really are honest in saying that you expected Khamzat to f****** destroy Kevin Holland, you’re lying. There’s just no way. Kevin Holland is a bad motherf*****.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)

It is uncertain where Chimaev’s future will lie after he posted on his social media all but confirming his entry into the middleweight division, but it is almost certain wherever he ends up you can expect him to provide the same level of entertainment.

Following Khamzat Chimaev apparent confirmation that he will be making the move up in weight to 185lbs, Nate Diaz has reacted, claiming he retired ‘Borz’ from the welterweight division.

Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz were set to face off in a main event welterweight clash at UFC 279. However, Chimaev missed weight by 7.5lbs, which resulted in the fight being scrapped. Both Diaz and Chimaev faced different opponents, whom they both bested.

But the question remained, how could Chimaev continue on at welterweight when he missed weight by such a significant margin?

That question appeared to be recently answered by a Twitter post from Chimaev himself. ‘Borz’ simply posted ‘185.’

Nate Diaz has since responded with his own post. The now former UFC fighter was less the complimentary to the undefeated ‘Borz,’ stating: “Duh I retired u from 170 dumb f**k.”

It seems likely Khamzat Chimaev will now face off against Paulo Costa at middleweight. The two men had an altercation in the UFC PI during the UFC 279 fight week that was captured on camera and quickly circulated across social media. Costa has since appeared on shows such as The MMA Hour to further reiterate his desire to fight Chimaev next.

As for Nate Diaz, a move to the world of boxing seems the most likely next step. Jake Paul is the obvious opponent, with the controversial YouTuber set to face off against Anderson Silva in the coming months. Silva is also a potential option, as are the likes of Tyron Woodley, KSI, Floyd Mayweather and many more.

Who would you like to see Nate Diaz fight next?
